Last year I bought a Nikon 1 J1 on the recommendation by a friend. Cost me around $100, bit of a starter camera. I was getting into photography as a hobby and it served me well. It took me until last month to decide to buy a tripod. I found one at a Goodwill and brought it home.
It was pretty busted, though still functional. I mounted my camera and took pictures. Worked fine. Today, I was bringing it from my room to another and the mounting piece that attaches the camera to the tripod popped off. My camera tumbled to the ground hitting conveniently placed throw rugs, and it snapped in half.
I was mortified. I know little about photography and less about cameras. I did some research and my bayonet mount ring broke? I read that these on this model are notoriously cheap. Made from plastic and easy to break. So, now I'm looking at repairing a device that I am totally unfamiliar with by using parts that I know nothing about.
My cheapness has caught up to me. Using faulty and busted equipment to hold my camera. I feel like an asshole. Tell me, /p/, is it worth it to spend the $10 on a replacement bayonet mount and attempt to fix it myself? Or, should I use this time to upgrade? Buy a better camera and save myself the hassle. What would you do?
This is my fist time posting. I'm sorry if this doesn't belong. I'm looking for advice. Not necessarily the steps involved in fixing my camera. I'm not made of money. But, I also want a better camera. I feel like such a piece of shit breaking my camera. But, I also feel like it was going to happen eventually.

Replace the part but also look into getting a better point and shoot. I'm also an owner of the nikon j1 and it's pretty flimsy. The build quality is dogshit, made of plastic and so are the lenses. It doesn't take bad pictures, it's just that it doesn't have support for older lenses and you have to get an adapter even for nikon lenses. Save up for a starter dslr kit.
>>3110044
Is this system dead yet?
>>3110063
I'm gonna level with you. I love taking shots of nature. Natural shots, trying to capture energy. But, I mostly use it for lewds. I can't figure how to program the timer and I have to go up to it between every shot I take. I don't have the remote. I bought it used. I've handled one of those cameras you speak of just last month. It was very nice! It had a lot of options and took great pictures. I want something that takes good pictures and videos of me and also outside shots of nature. Do I really need to drop $500+ on a kit to do that? I dream of taking quality shots. Learning more about lighting and composition. I guess I need decent equipment to do that?
>>3110071
I don't know what you mean.
>>3110094
honestly just get another cheapo camera.
get a 50$ Nikon D40 or whatever might be reasonable now, and keep learning.
I wouldn't recommend spending too much money before you know what you want.
On the other hand, 10$ doesn't seem like a huge deal if you want to go ahead and try to fix your camera.
>>3110044
I have no love for your camera and I'd want a better camera regardless if it broke or not. Are you willing to pay for it? IDK.
That said a $10 fix doesn't sound like something nobody should attempt... honestly, if you care to, go for it!
>>3110094
>use it for lewds
Post examples.
And a good choice for lewds would be the a6000. Shows up on sale for around $400 quite often, and it has a fantastic cellphone tethering app. You could use the app as a remote control and it will give you a preview to help with framing too.
It will blow the j1 out of the water when it comes to low light lewds too.
>>3110094
>I guess I need decent equipment to do that?
Somewhat. It'll be nice to have sharp glass on a high resolution camera, but you can already get fairly okay results on something more moderate like a halfway decent APS-C with a single decent prime lens.
And portable flash units are not too bad for stills if you are in a white or perhaps reddish room.
Basically, it's still more ideal to go FF and studio lighting, but photos can really start to look pretty respectable already before you hit $1k.
>>3110112
Yeah, I'll order the part. Why not try and fix it, right? I don't wanna break it further is my only concern. Pay 10bux for another shitty plastic part from some amazon seller and fuck it up.
>>3110144
Taking pictures is great. I like it a lot. I'm willing to drop some money. But, $500? Ahhh, that gets tricky.
>>3110155
I've evolved from camera phone to camera. Made strides but of course can't take anything too professional. Lewds are interesting. It's all about angle, accentuating curves. Lighting, drawing attention to the best parts of you. Pose, making yourself sexy. Lewds are about fooling people. I'll look at that camera you suggested.
>>3110162
It can be tricky with lewds. It's possible that lower quality photos can help the appeal of your work. It smooths out wrinkles, blurrs imperfections, and brings out less of the limitless imperfections we all have.
Thank you all for the insightful recommendations. I don't like hit and running a board, ignorant of its content. Really, I want to take good pictures--despite the content.
>>3110178
> But, $500? Ahhh, that gets tricky.
Seriously? That's still only like 2 months worth of savings for a low-paid job.
>>3110183
I'm living on savings right now. Dad had brain surgery, family needs me. If I was employed right now, it'd be time to upgrade. Being between jobs, I don't know. In the grand scheme of things, 500 bucks isn't a big deal. But right now, I have to leverage my limited resources versus my desire to take pictures and videos of unmentionables.
>>3110155
Been looking on amazon. Is the Sony Alpha a6000 Camera what you're talking about. It looks pricey! All these letters and phrases make me feel like I'm buying a graphics card or something. These model numbers are greek to me. I certainly don't see it on sale at the moment. Is Amazon the best place to look for cameras? I use it for everything else.
Also, I wouldn't wanna post anything lewd here. It's a blue board. How do people go about posting nude images here? Link it elsewhere? I don't mind linking to a post on another board. I don't know a lot about /p/ but you're all a lot more understanding than I figured. I thought I'd be laughed at. My pictures are certainly amateur. I post them on some boards but don't usually deal with posting them on a blue board.
>>3110202
Bro just pace yourself family comes first, just save what you can for a better camera. I bought my first camera by saving loose change. Something I've learned from buying cameras, is that it won't make you anymore of a better photographer. Literally if you have time, look up Digital Rev pro photographer cheap camera. A good photographer can shoot on anything. It will get you motivated to shoot some shots.
>>3110202
Feels like you might want to get a camera after getting some job, in terms of what you focus your current efforts on.
>>3110222
>Something I've learned from buying cameras, is that it won't make you anymore of a better photographer.
They do take better photos and this is why the best photographers generally had and have high-end cameras.
The endless "photographer skill beats gear" meem is just so heavily in denial of actual reality where almost all famous and almost all people who constantly shoot photos had pretty damn good gear. Hell, even most porn producers have pretty good cameras.
>>3110221
I don't think it is on sale right now.
Last years black friday it was down to $400 with a $50 gift card.
Check prime day next week, might show up again. Otherwise wait till black friday.
>>3110227
Well yeah I know that, but you can have the best camera and still do shit.
>>3110222
>>3110226
Family does come before all this camera stuff. But, all this photography is something that keeps me going. I feel older and older and the more time I wait is the less time I'm doing things that I enjoy. These better cameras give me access to more tools, more buttons, more states. Things I can learn and play around with and understand. Also raise the quality of life for when I do take pictures. I'm super limited with this Nikon. A job is coming, in the meantime I indulge in taking pictures and videos.
>>3110227
I experiment a lot with poses, angle, and lighting. It totally changes everything about the human body. I still have a long ways to go. But, a higher-end model is tempting because it gives me more options. Even though I really shouldn't indulge right now. It's especially difficult when you take lewds. You want to look good. Sometimes at all costs.
>>3110229
I'll check it next week, then. I guess I can attempt a repair in the meantime and bide my time till a sale. I don't mind dropping $200 on something. I sure as fuck am not dropping the camera itself again. Christ.
>>3110233
Yea, but it's excessively hard to do shit except by subject choice. Which really isn't much of a problem in this case.
Ultimately, a speedboat just isn't going to loose a 10km race to a rowing boat, and a new FF camera will take a good picture long after some P&S camera completely fucks it up.
All caveats to this are ultimately akin to saying that the speedboat driver might no be first if he's an idiot and drives into a harbor wall. It's excessively hard to do worse.
>>3110221
buy used, amazon can have decent deals, just look for sellers with some history. Ebay is also an option, although sometimes Amazon beats them, it just depends.
>>3110044
Lens build are uttercrap and break easily, had to resort to extreme measures

Speak of the devil, my screen just broke
>>3110044
>is it worth it to spend the $10 on a replacement bayonet mount and attempt to fix it myself?
Definitely. At the very least, you'll gain experience fixing cameras, and if you succeed, you'll have a camera that you can use or sell for $50+.
Just make sure that if you find any shims under the broken bayonet when you take it off, you must put them all back in the same positions when re-assembling.
>>3110248
I bought this Nikon used. I'll definitely buy another camera used. I'll browse both sites. See what I can come up with.
>>3110255
That doesn't look right. What am I looking at? I don't have any experience with maintaining cameras.
>>3110426
My sister in law said she was interested in taking IR photos. Said that if anything I could take the camera's IR sensor out? I think. I definitely appreciate any and all advice on fixing this camera. I've been reading over tutorials on how to do it and a big piece of advice was to watch closely on how the camera disassembles. That way I know how to reassemble it more easily.
Also, here's my camera. I took this last night when it broke. It's a shitty picture. But, it'll suffice.
Is this what I want? https://www.amazon.com/NEEWER-Bayonet-Mount-18-105-55-200mm/dp/B005HTP7MK
The plastic clips broke that run the circumference of the part of the lens that attaches to the body of the camera. I can't seem to jimmy them together by force. I guess the plastic clips are what locks them together. That's why they broke when met with such a minimal impact.

That part is for another Nikon mount and won't fit.
Try contacting their support with the image, it seems like a small problem.
>>3110202
Put your hobbies on hold, you have much more important priorities at hand, stay strong for your family
Wait, is it just the lens that broke? If that's the case I would just get another lens, preferably a better lens, like this guy: https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-NIKKOR-18-5mm-1-8-Silver/dp/B0099XHDCW
If the mount on the actual camera broke I would probably get a new camera
>>3110973
Ah, okay. I'll take better pictures and read up a lil on how my camera is built. Try to diagnose it better.
>>3110044
Throw it away and buy a Leica and 35mm f1,4 Summilux. You wont regret it.
J1 fampai reporting in. Your camera metal bayonet is fine, your 10-30mm zoom is not. You may get the 18.5mm lens and it will serve you forever as it is great fit to this small camera. Never let your tripod hit camera on the ground.
If you need wider angle - you shoot with phone, if you need longer - you aren't close enough to scene.
Shoot RAW, those files are just 10.5Mb max. Shoot S and A modes. Shoot continuous in situations where moment or noise is critical.
ISO 1600 is ok if you work it in DxO Prime.
10MP isn't enough for anything low-light commercial yet memories are priceless))
Post your great pics.

>if anything I could take the camera's IR sensor out?
You probably meant the IR filter.
Yes, that's definitely possible, but since you replace a piece of glass with air, most lenses won't focus to infinity anymore. For best results, you have to replace the IR filter with an all-spectrum filter or an IR-pass filter, which are kinda expensive and hard to get.
>>3112450
I'll look into it.
>>3112583
Great post, thank you for the advice. I actually really enjoy using my cellphone. It's an LG 4. I really like shots of the sky. There's a lit of shit my phone picks up or adds that can make for some great shots. I'll post some when I'm home.
>>3112648
I guess she's not getting her IR filter, then.
Anon is getting back
