I'm not really interested in getting into the gear side of photography, at least not yet. I used to when I was much younger and just found the cost too prohibitive.
But I do want to be able to take point-and-shoot pictures from an interesting perspective and with interesting compositions.
Are there any books or exercises that can help me?

Check out Terry Davis. He takes some pretty interesting pictures without much gear. Don't go too deep or you will find some gay shit.

Look at books by all means they definitely help but your eye will develop over time it doesn't happen over night. In the meantime you need to keep shooting and shooting and learning from your mistakes.
