How can I take my photography to the next level? Right now my understanding of photography is pretty shallow. I just walk around aimlessly until I find something that I think can be composed into an interesting image. Then I play around with the sliders until I get the colors I think look good. I have no clear idea of what I am doing. How can I give my photography more depth? What would a photography course at an art school teach you? What are some good books on the history of photography as an art medium?

Sounds like you just need some direction in your work. Like a project. Try to create a set, or a photo essay.
try taking photos of people, candid street type the "advanced level" version.
you're always on the lookout for gestures, movements, composing, checking the scenario and the brain is always processing based on split-second moments.
it's a challenge but rewarding. it's accessible and it's free.
