I'm sure it's a great lens, but such a zoom range doesn't interest me. I'm likely to get 2 more lenses in the near future; a 16-50 SSM and a 70/80-200 2.8.

I think I want the minolta 80-200, but if a good deal comes along on the sony G 70-200 I think that's probably the better of the two.

thinking of getting a fed-boy stereo camera or an a7ii for completely different reasons. Don't really need either so I'm only willing to buy one
>>
>>3101513

It is exceptionaly sharp, nicknamed the Secret Handshake.

The 16-50 is a crop lens, right?
>>
>>3101532
Yes, it's a crop lens. I bought a crop camera. I am considering the equivalent tamron/sigma versions as well.
>>
>>3101534

Oh crap, I wasn't thinking.

Been using the old Minolta a7 so I keep thinking in full frame terms.

Yes, as awesome as the secret handshake is, it is less than ideal on a crop.

Sony makes a bunch of cheap, all plastic primes which are actually pretty decent. Should take a look at them.
>>
Should I get a pen f or an x100f?
>>
>>3101539
Their cheap plastic primes use the SAM af motor. It's absolutely terrible. I had one once, promptly returned it.
>>
>>3101543

The SAM is about the same as the screw drive. SSM is where is damn nice though.

But with how cheap old minolta primes are, the new plastic ones don't make much sense.

Looked on Kijiji today to see what used GH4s are going for these days, about three months after the release of the GH5

Found one being sold for $1000 (CAD), owned for a month and hardly used. I'll be picking it up on Monday. Considering these are still going for $1599 new, this was a deal I can't ignore.

No need to keep my GH2 and t3i anymore. What would be the m4/3 equivalent of the Canon's Nifty Fifty? (50mm 1.8f)

I'm thinking switching from Pentax k50 + Tamron 17-50 f2.8 combo to Panasonic gx80 with kit 12-32 lens. 90% of my photos are f/8 iso100-400 nature/landscape/city photos. Do you guys think that I'll be missing anything very important besides body wr, a bit of D-range and bigger battery with this potential transition. Main reason I want to change system is size and aspect ratio.

Thinking of buying the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm F 2.0 for my A6000.

Any better/cheaper alternatives or should I just go ahead and buy it?

/p/ I have a 6D + 50mm F1.8 STM

I am currently thinking of spending 450€ on the Canon 24-105 F4 or the Sigma 24-105 F4, which one should I get?

Also, for around 500€, which lens would you get to complement my kit, I thought of primes but a 35mm f2 + 85mm f1.8 would be more expensive.

Yeah, can't see any better alternative. Thought i'd ask just in case I was missing something. The only other lens I was thinking of getting was the Sony 10-18mm, until I saw the price of £700.

I'll just grab the Samyang for £280, or less if I can.

Guys, i have a Sony Nex 5 that i've used for a while with an 18-55mm, i used it mostly for portraits and landscape which was fine but now i want something better.
I have about a budget of $500 although that could evolve for more in the future.
I'm just wondering if i should buy a whole new camera (i've been advised the Sony A6000) or a new lens (i love wide angles but i'm thinking of a zoom instead of a fixed lens.
Do you guys have any suggestions? Thanx!

Trying to look for an entry level/advanced entry level dslr. Any suggestions on what to look for? this looks nice.
https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-rebel-t7i-body-digital-slr
>>
>>3101790
I think you should get one new lens and then start saving for a new body. If you want to get more into /p/ and you like the e-mount, the A7 series is for you.

For zoom, get a lens with a constant aperture of 4 or better. The Sony G 18-105 seems like a good value and covers a massive range.

If you want better low light performance or better bokeh, you will need to go with a prime with that budget. Something f/2 or faster.
>>
>>3101816
What you're looking for is called intermediate or enthusiast level cameras.

The 2 digit Canon cameras (80D, 77D), Sony a6500 or A7 series, Sony A77ii, etc.
>>
>>3101787
looks like a proprietary quick-release plate. There are open/standardized formats like ARCA SWISS or Akai, but they are based on a rail-design, not a snap-design like yours so either you find out what tripod it is or you are fucked.
>>
>>3101820
thank you!
>>
>>3101820
>2 digit Canon cameras
That's a weird way of spelling "3 digit Canon Cameras"

Hey guys, i've been looking stuff up for days, but I'd need some information from someone with hands-on experience.

One lens to rule them all? By the looks of the sample photos, CA is very well contained and the image is more than acceptably sharp.
I wonder when if it will be rebranded for Pentax.
>>
>>3101910
Not to mention WR as well.
>>
>>3101910
It's not full frame. Pentax rebrands aps-c lenses too?
>>
>>3101914
What difference would it make in rebranding? Seems to me like a hot piece for the masses and even for some enthusiasts who want a light travel gear, so why not buy the license instead of trying to develop a similar one for competition?
>>
>>3101910
I had the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC and it's about sharp enough for Facebook. I don't imagine this is any better
>>
>>3101919
Tamron did good with the latest 16-300, it looks like the further developed version going for longer FL rather than starting wider.
If the in-camera lens correction works well then they can pull off very well contained CA.
I read somewhere that the new lens development goes this way, instead of getting the perfect image in the optics they design the optics so it is easier to isolate fringing and CA in software and do the correction in software.
Plus the new coatings does a better job getting rid of those horrible ugly color casts and purple shadows in the older superzoom designs.
>>
>>3101914
They have before. The 18-250 and 18-270 were Tamron rebadge jobs. I think the DA* 16-50 and 50-135 were Tokina optical designs.
>>
>>3102002
As a self respecting Pentax user I deny the existence of the star in the DA 16-50, but the 50-135 is something I've been lusting for a long time. I would trade my 70-200 for one right away.
>>
Which third parties make a good 'walk around' lens in the 18-135 category? Just something close to that range... 16/18 to 100/150mm.
>>
>>3102015
Tamron and Sigma comes to my mind
Current lineup Sigma 18-200 (DC Macro OS HSM) and 18-300 (DC Macro HSM) look nice and the newer Tamron 16-300 is good as well.
With superzooms only the newer are acceptable, if you don't want anything over 135mm I suggest looking into first party options. Nikon and Pentax offers good options around the 18-135 range.
You will have to accept that you will sacrifice image quality for zoom range so don't expect pin-sharp results over across the frame and at all aperture ranges.
Don't get the old Tamron 18-250, 18-270, old Sigma 18-200 and similar era superzooms, they are nasty.

Why would anyone want a crop camera? Just seems like it makes so many nice focal lengths awkward as fuck.
>>
>>3102183
Cheaper and lighter.
Don't be a dick, Anon.
>>
>>3102183
eh, I use a m43 and the lenses are mostly designed around the x2 crop factor. Granted if I was buying an asp-c camera I'd get an x100 series, which has like 37 mm lens which is fine really. I wouldn't use a full frame if it wasn't as small as a rangefinder TBQH
>>
>>3102189

I mean I get that, but if those are your priorities, you can get an a7 which is both light and cheap.

Or just shoot 135 film with modern lenses for dirt cheap.
>>
>>3102190

The x100 is really the only Fuji body that I liked. Their whole x-mount line is massive.

Shame about the terrible lens though. I wish it was a micl.
>>
>>3102207
A what?
>>
>>3102219

micl camera=mirroless inter-changable lens camera.
>>
>>3102224
eh it is probably a bitch to design an optical range finder with all those lenses and have them small and compact. Plus this is a really specific market they are going for with the x100 series anyway. Only thing I don't like about them is that the converter lens things are for 24 and 50 mm equivalence. Would have liked something like an 85mm.

I mean it isn't like most m43 users don't use a single pancake lens for 95% of the time they use their camera. I own a shitty kit lens, that didn't even come with the camera just because it is a pancake.
>>
>>3102180
>Get the EF-S 24/2.8 for everyday walkaround, the 50/1.8 is portrait tele on crop.

Ok now lets say that i am mostly going to take pictures of trucks and heavy machinery, in that case which lens would you recommend me?

I initially bought a Sony NEX-3 mirrorless camera because I thought it'd be easier to carry around than a full sized DSLR, but over the years that I've owned it I've found that regardless you always need to bring it in a separate carrying bag anyway and if I'd ever get another lens it'd be even more difficult to lug around in spite of the pictures just being so/so so I just upgraded to a Nikon D5300. Did I do good?

Have it. You pretty much can't go wrong with that one. It's a really great macro lens.
>>
>>3102975
Well macro is on its way. You know tho, you can adapt any lens on it, right? I use my old nikon mount macro on mine with great results.
>inb4 af

A stabilized 200/4 would be great and I wouldn't mind a small 16/2.8, but other than those, I think fuji is well covered from 8mm to 400mm.
>>
>>3102976
I can toss an A7* or A6?00 in my usual backpack just fine.

I'd even prefer an A6000 over the D5300. But you already have it, so the only thing to worry about now is basically lenses, unless you're going to sell it again already.
>>
>>3102976
You did fine, although I would've got a used d7100 instead.
>>
>>3102997
The NEX kind of turned me off of mirrorless cameras. Is the A6000 that much better?

>>3102999
Generally second-hand stuff is petty well treated here but I felt a bit apprehensive getting a second-hand lens for my first DSLR. Wad just happy to find the 5300 was the same price as the 3300.

Pro photographers are starting to use A6300's and A6500's as their main bodies, if that tells you anything.

NEX is a point and shoot with removable lenses.

Alpha series are real cameras.

Currently have an EPL-6 with a kit that I got as a gift.

I want to go beyond what I have, but I'm looking at paying 4-500 for an EVF and a 25mm lens. With that money and selling it, I can get a decent DSLR.

Is it worth it spending this much on MFT when I want to grow forward?

Do it, man. If you like photography and think it'll help you, do it. Even if it typically doesn't help everyone, you'll learn something from it. Maybe the equipment will you give more latitude to improve your photographs. Maybe you'll enjoy going out shooting more with a new camera than the last. If not, you can sell it. Either way, might as well try, 'cause at least you'll have the experience.

I can do the same with an e-mount camera and autofocus them. Plus I can use the native lenses for what I want.

I just don't see a reason to pay more for Fuji when it is less capable than e-mount.

But god damn, their bodies are sexy.

I have the same dillema. Fuji is a bit cheaper, more compact, but the E mount has IBIS, FF and probably gonna have more 3rd party lenses. And I rather like the styling on Sony, but Fuji just looks better.

Fuji is more expensive here. An a7ii is $200 cheaper than an X-T2. Size really isn't all that different either.

I kinda wish Sony would make a more stylized body instead if the all business feel(which is cool in its own way) the alpha series has.

Recently got a X70 for when I don't feel like dragging around a DSLR, but still want to be able to take decent photos.

Overall I'm happy with it. I was worried that I'd miss having a viewfinder, but it's really not too bad. Ergonomics are good, considering the small size. Having dedicated dials for apperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation is great. I feel a bit forced to use auto ISO, though, since I haven't been able to assign a control to it that isn't too awkward.

Main downside to me is the short focal length. 28mm is just a bit too wide for general purpose, would love if it had been 50mm or just 35mm.

It offers two crop modes that are easy to switch on/off on the fly, but you just lose too many megapixels. Would have have been more useful if the camera was 24 megapixels (like X100F). Anyway, it's good enough for web or Instagram I guess.
>>

There's Fujinon 10-24 f/4, and narrower Touit 12/2.8 and pretty good and lots cheaper Rokinon 12/28. I'd probably settle on the last one, so, I'd need at least 18mm on FF, and there are barely any cheap ones for Sony.

There is the Rokinon 14mm on Sony, roughly the same as on the Fuji.

I bought one of those large foldable light tents/boxes to use for some product shots, but I've been using some lamps I have to light it, which I don't think is ideal, as they're a bit of a pain to set up since I use them on my desk, so I need to keep moving them from there whenever I need to take a picture. I'm not really sure if this is the appropriate thread for this question, but what type of lighting should I be looking at for something like this? Those LED panels work, or should I try to go for something like a spotlight, similar to the lamps I'm already using?
>>
>>3103429
Chinese carbon tripods are relatively cheap and often compact enough for a gym bag, yes. Look on Aliexpress for carbon tripods.

[Most of the ones I mean look like a Q666C, Dic&Mic E302C and so on - but there are many brands these are sold under.]
>>
>>3103446
> what type of lighting should I be looking at for something like this?
Studio strobes with modelling light function are still essentially ideal.

But you can make do with photographic LED panels ("photographic" because most LED panels don't have particularly good CRI on their LED). Portable strobes also are good.

Plus of course adequately adjustable stands for all of these.

Well the autofocus is not great and the sensor means that the RAW files are not easy to manipulate in a lot of post-processing software. For those reasons I would say it's not a pro camera (A full frame DSLR would be more appropriate for professional work).

Of course at the end of the day, your photos will be good depending on your individual skill and that will trump specs anyday.

Total absolute photography novice here. I want to upgrade from my 40D that was given to me as a hand-me-down of sorts. I'm on a pretty limited budget. So limited that the top of my price range, or what I'm leaning towards now, would be a rebel t6i (body only because the lenses I have already would fit I think???). Any alternatives I'm not taking into consideration and any preferred sellers of camera/s that would give me the best deal?
>>
>>3104093
> rebel t6i
Would never buy that camera, it's worse than even a D5200. First interesting Canon is a 77D or 80D or something.

If you didn't buy any pricey lenses, you shouldn't really feel forced to stay with Canon either.
>>
>>3104110
Then what camera at a comparable price point would you suggest (that ideally comes with lenses of some kind)?

It's just annoying having winder angle lenses that dont end up being very wide, like my 24mm. I suppose you could say the extra $900 for the 6d could just be used on a good 16-35mm lens or something.
>>
>>3104635
Why not just buy wide angles designed for APS-C instead, like the Sigma 17-50/2.8 or 18-35 Art?
>>
>>3104637
So the sigma 17-50 is 17-50 on an aps-c sensor, it doesnt end up becoming like a 27-80? I hadnt considered these much as i figured they were probably lower quality. I also would like the better low light performance of full frame but that's more just a bonus.
>>
>>3104642
The 17-50mm is a 24-70mm FF equivalent for APS-C sensors.
Your 24mm lens acts like a 40mm on FF so it is more on the normal focal length than on a simple wide angle. The kit lens is 18-55mm giving a 28-80mm FF equivalent focal length on APS-C sensor.

how much better quality do you get from full frame 24-70mm vs aps-c 17-50mm?

If I have about $6-800 to spend on an upgrade to the kit lens for my Sony A6000, would you go with the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 with the MC11 adapter and something like the Sony 55-210 or the Sony 18-105 f/4 and a wide angle zoom or 35 or 50mm prime?

The 18-105 f/4 looks interesting because I'm going to go hiking in the northern parts of Sweden later this summer so it would be a good do it all lens but I feel like having f/4 on the wider end would be limiting.

A fast 16-35 would be a nice pairing but I can't find any good lenses that aren't ridiculously expensive, should I just grab a fast prime and call it a day?
>>
>>3104812
Go for it, the A6000 is the best value camera you can get for less than 1000 Ameribucks

How retarded is buying A6000/6300 and buying some FF lenses for it? I plan jumping to A7x later, i just don't have enough money for both right now.
>>
>>3104934

The 18-105 G is supposed to be really good. It is a very useful range and quite compact. An excellent walk around lens. f/4 is more than enough for 95% of situations. Grab a prime if you are uncomfortable with it.

Also take a look at Sony's crop offerings. There is an a-mount 16-50 f/2.8 that will perform perfectly with the LA-EA3 adapter. Their is a 16-35 f/2.8 Zeiss for a-mount, but it is a ff lens and quite pricey.

I wouldn't wanna spend more than $300 on a crop lens though...

That's true, I'll probably have to grab a prime anyways for portraits and low light shooting, I just have to decide between 35 or 50mm.

I used to have the Nikkor f/1.8 35mm on my old D3200 and I loved that setup but I'm thinking about going for a 50mm this time since it's a better focal length for portraits.
>>
>>3104938
I was thinking exactly about FE35 from sony or Samyang, but I'd also need some UWA(<16mm) lens. I think I would settle on Samyang 12mm for APS-C for now and spend rest on some M42 adapters (I've got Helios 44M-4 and Jupiter 135mm/3.5) and maybe some FF walkaround. Sounds like a plan?
>>
>>3104942

Sony lens is a better choice if you can find it under $600, otherwise go for the Samyang.

Samyang is supposed to be announcing some AF FF uwa lenses soon, might wanna wait a bit before you make that purchase, though you can't go wrong with the 12mm (I think there is a FF lens that is very similar but 14mm).

Sony really doesn't have a FF travel zoom I like. What I want is an e-mount Secret Handshake, but i doubt that will hapoen anytime soon.

>>3104940

The 18-105 could probably cut it as a portrait lens in a pinch, it is that good from my understanding.

But Sony has a lot of good portrait lenses to choose from. Easiest choice would probably be the FE 85mm f/1.8, buy I would suggest the 90mm f/2.8 macro. Yes it doesn't have a super wide aperture, and yes the autofocus is a little on the slow side, but it is absolutrly ludicrously sharp. Really one of the must have e-mount lenses.

I used an old screw drive Nikkor 50mm on my crop body for awhile and was quite impressed with the performance. Sharp, and had quite pleasing bokeh.
>>
Considering getting a X-E1 and use manual lenses for that since I'm poor. How stupid am I?
I suck at manual focusing but I'm using film DSLRs right now
>>
>>3104936
I found myself basically just use 2 lenses for everything I do.

The 28mm F2 and 85mm F,18, and they are basically two lenses with 4 different focal lengths depending on whether I equip them o the FF or the crop.
>28, 42, 85, 128
>>

28 is still a bit too narrow for me, since I'm into architecture and landscapes more than portraits.

>>
>>3105052
Do you want to take tight headshots? Do you want to stand far away from your subject? Because those seem like overkill for portraits. You could look at the Sony 50mm or the Sigma 60mm.
>>
>>3105054
I'd prefer tight headshots....i think the 70-200 would be nice also for zooming in landscapes.
I've been thinking about a 50mm as well.

>>
>>3105054

With your 18-55, you'll have a maximum aperture at 50-55mm of f/5.6, which is not great for subject isolation (i.e. blurring the background). A lens of f/1.8-2.8 will be better for that around that focal length.

Samefag here, but is f/4 good enough for portraits at 50mm and above? I'm leaning towards getting the 18-105 f/4 because it's still going to be faster than the kit lens when you're shooting at 50mm and above, and I'll probably grab something like the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which will be better for low light shooting and astro landscapes and stuff.

I currently have $365AUD to get a new camera body, I can get a Canon 50d for $350. Would it be a decent upgrade from a d3200?

I own the 23 and 35 F2 and the weather sealing is too good to pass up, if you dont have a weather sealed body you could get the 1.4 .

I use both on an X-Pro2 and I love it, they focus faster and are sharp at F2. It's going to piss rain on Canada Day here in Ottawa so it'll be a good test.

Didn't get the 50d. Hopefully should be picking a 60d up tonight for $380 instead.

I have a Sony Nex 5 and using an 18-55mm. I'm thinking of buying a Sigma 60mm to make better portraits. What do you guys think? The 50mm of Sony seems to have issues.
