This is so bad I am not sure if this a troll thread or not but any way...
1. YELLOW - Massive bright/ blown out patches on the edge of the frame that drag the eye away from the subject.
2. ORANGE - The fuck is that bra? and watch?
3. GREEN - Face is too dark, should be the brightest part of the frame as it is the subject.
4. BLUE - What the juddering monkey fuck is she doing it that tree? Picking acorns? So forced and unnatural.
Other than that..... utterly bland and forgettable.

After years of studying the technicalities of photography on this board, you have correctly identified every single itzy bitzy flaw in a picture.
But the question is: do you shoot photos people want to see?
I'm not saying the most popular idiot is right.
I'm saying: nobody gives a fuck.
This does apply not just /p/
4chan in general
The chans are filled with spergy autists that will see any kind of flaw as ruinous to the whole, but never come out to create true greatness.
It's better to go out and shoot a hundred almost-great pictures a day than to wait your entire life for a chance to get one perfect.
The girl in the pic is probably super happy to have such a great pic of herself. Most people I know don't even notice when my Focus point is on the frame of the glasses or ears or the shoulder facing the camera rather than the eyes. I tend to notice right away, as does every other sperg on here, but noone in the real world does.
>>3100851
Although technicalities shouldn't be ignored, you are right. We shouldn't be so god damn focused on it.

I think when people do these kind of critiques is because they only know the technical stuff. That's not inherently wrong because technical chat can go on forever. But I do think the nit-pickiness becomes a bit absurd and I think it stems either from insecurities or from simply getting caught so snugly in your own way of "seeing" that you don't think past that.
I mean I spend so much time critiquing the shit out of my work that it's hard NOT to be a judgmental ass when I look at others. I usually think about what you just said though, and I take a step back and try to appreciate the merits and positive qualities of the image I'm critiquing. It's not like my opinion is the only valuable one or should be considered the word of Photo Gods. I actually enjoy photography more when I'm not a huge, picky asshole about it.

There are immutable principles of photography. One of the main ones is that the eye is guided from shadow to light. If you put a bright splog on the edge of the frame, a splog that is brighter than the subject, the eye is dragged to the border and out the frame.
This isn't a case of arbitrary rule following, this is a fundamental physiological principle that has underpinned paintings and photographs for centuries.
You may, after many years of practice become good enough to break this rule. However this image is not that good. It reeks of amateur and frankly so do your blithe comments.
You are not experienced or knowledgeable enough to be passing comment on other people's work.
>>3101075
I'd suggest you use a longer lens because your subject is so small I can't see his or her face.
Or you could post this in the proper thread.

I agree with you that the face should be darker and bright green patches are distracting. Essentially, it's the same point.
But how do I not do that, if I want to shoot outdoors with natural light? I either have to shoot the entire frame in complete shade, or I have to have my subject in direct sunlight which is going to throw harsh shadows on her face.
>>3101084
hi there, friend. it seems like youre using an arbitrary notion of objective rules, instead of actually having an actual opinion you have to stand for and defend.
the "rules" youre talking about are actually just tools the photographer can use to achieve what they want, or ignore and get a mediocre result..
>>3101088
You have a couple of options:
1 Wait until the light is more even, for example on an overcast day or sunset.
2 Use off camera flash to brighten the face, ideally with a high speed sync so you can shoot at 1/4000ish and crush the ambient light as well.
3 Use reflectors and diffusers to brighten the model, but I have always found that unreliable.
4 Find somewhere else to shoot.
>>3101088
buy a reflector, like this one.. its like 10$ on amazon.
either use the white or the silver part to fill in the shadows in harsh sunlight, or, use the diffuser to make the harsh sunlight soft.
If the subject is in the shadow u can use the reflector to bounce sunlight onto your subject, just make sure the reflector is above the subject, and not below
>>3101090
Fine.
My opinion is this photograph is shit because my eye disappeared out the frame.
If only there was some principle the photographer could have followed to avoid that.
>>3101093
absolutely. get these in all shapes and sizes to make your life way easier, especially using it without the reflective material just as a scrim is the best thing ever for me.
even when I'm out without anyone assisting I just use the manfrotto 035 clamps to fix them to window frames or columns or whatever to make a quick soft light source out of nothing.

I'm not sure who you think you're arguing with m8
All I said is nitpicking can remove enjoyment from photography and some people's rules about things are arbitrary. The most arbitrary critique I saw of the OP was the fact that the bra was showing. The stuff about light and shadow makes sense though.
>>3101101
care to tell us how you did this one?
im guessing theres a big window or doorframe to the right as primary lightsource, and a reflector to fill in the shadows from the left?
>>3101103
exactly, it's a 2x1.5m folding scrim in the window frame to the right and a little white reflector bottom left, but since it's not really 'aimed' and leaning on the wall awkwardly it has close to no effect, yet the shadows are soft enough for me

looks like something in a hipster magazine
ankle bracelets should not be worn on girls with fat legs
dress makes her look fatter than she is and is generally very ugly (material colour fit)
her hair is too dark and can't see it, makes her look slightly chimpish
technically a good shot, i like how her pose leans along with the shelf behind her. was that intentional? cool location in any case.

absolutely, I was just quoting wikipedia actually
even if you're trying really hard to control as many aspects as possible one could still argue that there's a certain amount of randomness and 'luck' involved in terms of getting the shots you want from a human subject
yet I think the word 'intent' from the quote is the most important here, it's absolutely the intention that separates a snapshot/documentary from a portrait for me
Based on intent I'd call the girl at the concert a portrait.
Black girl portrait has that perfect smirk of contempt and arrogance I see so often on blacks. Well done.

Fucking nailed it. The crop seems a bit long to me but I differ to you sir. God damn, what was your lights setup here? Is that a soft box above her head I see reflected?
Great idea, and executed. Got any more keepers?
>>3102108
I'm trying to figure out how this got so much light in it. You shot it at f/16, 1/100, ISO 100 and to me it looks overexposed.
I like the shot very much, but I think it could use some more shadows.
>>3102113
thanks, mate. it was a lot of fun.
I'm pulling all shots into the storage right now, that one was just a quick edit i did on the laptop I tethered to on the way home. so maybe I'll post another one later.
lighting is a 150cm octa without the front diffusor practically being a oversized beauty dish, and then two relatively hard rims with light blue gels, all three strobes are brx 500
>>3102116
Obviously I blew the fuck out of the shadows. I like that super bright look but I may overdo it sometimes. Is this an improvement you think?

Technically it's really good, it's also creative, and it's not tacky, which I think is really hard to do. I just think you could have gotten some better facial expressions. Here she looks surprised or afraid. I'd prefer to see something maniacal. I'd suggest music and alcohol.
>>3102125
thank you.
there's some more 'expressive' shots in there as well and just as I like the calm ones more she prefers the ones going nuts, so I see where you're coming from.
maybe it'll be some weird series or so, I don't really know what to do with the shots yet since it doesn't fit anywhere on my portfolio at this point
>>3102124
This is worse because now she is so dark compared to the background. I guess the entire exposure needs to come down. With a darker background you could get some more saturated blues and I think it would look good with her red shirt and tan skin.
I really like her pose and composition. To me it's the perfect capture of a 30 something American woman who is still sexy and has settled down in life but is still feisty when she wants and or needs to be.

>just make sure the reflector is above the subject, and not below
Why so?
>>3102461
because light coming from below casting shadows upwards looks completely off in most cases.
using a big soft reflector (white) from below to just slightly fill in is a different story, but if you're really in the shade using it as your strongest light source as anon described you really don't want it below eye level

it's cute
I still think your processing is a little flat and weird, low contrast and greenish for the most part
what kind of monitor are you using?
>>3102486
Due to you shooting natural lighting in what is a dark environment, her slight body movement compromised all fine detail in her features. Notice how the environment is tack sharp but her face is smeared.
Next time, move closer to the window, and angle her face towards the slats a little more to light her face. Take multiple shots in burst so hopefully one of them, she's not swaying enough to cause that blur. Consider lifting shadow regions in post.
>>3102486
I think the styling and mood is mostly great, the placement of her hands could be a little less awkward and the nails look out of place.
but it's more some technical things throw me off:
-too much headroom, all the space over the cupboard is not needed
-focus is obviously missed
-the eye is partially in bright light and shadow at the same time which looks super weird
-the hair color gets lost in the background and doesn't stand out because there's no rim light or similar
with a reflector or just some white posterboard on the camera left to even out the lighting this would have the potential to be pretty neat

You'd be better off with a cheap flash and some radio remote, to fill in the shadows. Bounce off a red brick wall for warmth. Lay the flash on the ground or what ever is availbable.

Tricky one, the distance between her and the hallway is good, it's a nice perspective but by willing to take her whole figure, there's half of the picture that's unnecessary.
I think you could have had the same idea rendered better by coming closer to her and take only the upper side of her body. Would have felt more intimate, at least that's what i would have done.

2) Why is she dressed so fancy in this broken down place? Contrast is good when there's a reason for it.
>>3101106
>Portrait centered
>Blurry background
What is the purpose of having a background here? You put her at the center and you blur the rest out.
Most people taking portraits will tell you that a background is nice on the side, cause you can look at them both simultaneously. Here, we're blocked by your subject and that waterfall is so blurry it hurts the eyes.
Also, her expression bores me to death. Someone put "Kill yourself" under her face, it would be funnier.
>>3102308
You should have pulled out your cock, she would have laughed, the picture would have been ten times better.
Instead, she looks all judgy and "please tell me when this is done so i can go feed my kids"
>>3102486
Honestly? Nice tits. I'd focus on those next time. But try to be less blurry and lit her better.
>>3103536
>Mom, please, let me take pictures.
>>3104316
Yeah. I'm guessing you don't have a closer pic of her?
If you crop this one, i don't think the result will be great. Sometimes, it's best to leave the whole context of the pic as a reminder of that moment.
A pretty girl, a pretty pose, a pretty area.

Not bad. It would have been better if you'd gotten in a little closer, and gotten yourself a little lower. It works with all that stuff at the top being in frame, but you have too much empty space above his head. Would be better if his head took up more space and you took it from lower, creating a steeper angle up towards the curtains.
>>3104746
Sorry but this one just sucks. It'd be better to use a wider aperture, different pose, you're making his nose look pretty big here, background isn't interesting, it's kind of weak all around.
>>3105245
Sorry, a more narrow aperture. It would be better to get his shoulders/bag in focus as well, and background is far enough away that you can still get bokeh. Maybe around f/4.5.
>>3105246
Fuck, you used f/4.5. Guess you still needed something more narrow.

completely uninteresting, not even flattering to the model, no light on her face. basically, what you would expect from someone from a developing country.
>>3105933
background is a little too busy but i like the photo. not bad editing. you lit up her face better, but not her eyes. the shadows are important for it looking natural. but still her eyes are so dark. so i am not sure what you can do here.
maybe someone better than can me can advise/provide their version. this looks about how well i do. maybe you could even start a thread, posting the raw and seeing peoples' different edits. those threads are cool.
>>3106026
Her face has too much flat lightning, other than that not too bad. I like the colours. And the comp isn't bad either.
I absolutely botched the white balance here, and I have no idea how to fix it. I'd prefer a solution in LR, but if need be, I can use PS also. Have an entire set like this so if I can find something that works, that'd be great.
Also what can I do next time in camera to not get such botched colours? Grey card?

I just tried, and white balance is just way off. Also try adjusting the saturation value of yellow and green.

try adjusting the tint toward magenta? I usually do that when I've photographed a subject in a green area - helps take care of the spill.

Weird background color, weird crop. Looks like you're going to chroma-key her. Looks maybe a half-stop or stop underexposed. I like the expression and I like where you've placed focus. You lit her face a bit more, yeah. It doesn't make the picture better though. At some point, you edit something that's worth it otherwise you just keep it with its flaws.
>>3106602
what was your idea when you took that picture? I feel it needs some explaining.

Got the right idea, but a few things are sorta disturbing for the eyes. The importance of the dark foreground on the right. Her bra showing through.
Also maybe her expression is slightly too naive for showing her panties like that.
>>3106693
From a beginner to a beginner.
This is better than the first photo for me, but again, the light on her face still feels very strange.
And second, no need for a telephoto 78mm, this could be nicely shot with a 50mm for exemple. With a 78mm, this would be nicer with you were taking the photo with a bigger distance from her.

Overall I like it. To nitpick don't have the flowers coming out of her face. Lighting on her is a little flat. But overall I like it, pleasing image with good colours subject and background. A little more colour, like brighter red lipstick or something would make it even better.
>>3107981
What about this one
>>3107999
model is really ridiculously bad looking
makes it hard to comment on facial expression bc making her look good is #missionimpossible
pose isn't helping her weight problem
very sharp image, good focus
i like the details of the beach under her in the foreground a lot
bokeh is too soft and would be more interesting if it was still hazy, but more defined than it is now
>>3108094
Oh, that's good! Never thought of mixing good, constructive comments with total bullshit that way! It really makes your bait more palatable! 2/10 for making me respond.
>>3108108
What? He is right. She does have a weight problem that i tried to hide and she is not beautiful.
>>3108112
Plus i can see now that i oversharpened the image
>>3108108
lol i'm just making comments on the photo. i am guessing this image wasn't meant to be grotesque, so it is relevant that the woman does not look beautiful in the image, but also relevant to acknowledge that this is not the photographer's fault.
it's like,if you were reviewing music but you couldn't hear the bass on a track, you would review it still, but with the caveat that you can't hear the bass, so cannot comment on that aspect of the song.
>>3108112
>>3108123
"Not beautiful" is not the same as "ridiculously bad looking." And that pose does more for her than you think, evidently. Yes, if you've ever posed someone who's "thicc" then you know immediately what's up with her, but to a normie she looks, well, normal; so mission accomplished. The rest of the criticism is spot on.
>>3105575
Does it seem only to me that she has a dick? You should definitely notice this dick-popping shade XD
>>3108145
by scrunching her all together, body looks shorter and plumper. having her thighs rest against the back of her calves pushes all that out, making it look plumper. with a body like this, i think it's better to stretch her out and make her body look longer. as well, leaving her arm to the left side of her torso extends the torso, tricking the eye into thinking her torso is wider than it is. in the end, the eye sees her in this box like shape and it makes her seem even shorter and wider.
>>3108159
I retract my bait accusation and humbly apologize Anon. I still think this model isn't that bad in and of herself, she is who she is, but this pic is all I have to go on, and I agree with the photography critique. Not saying post her on /s/ either, just... You know.
Humbly submitted for /p/ review

In the end it's bound to fail because criticism is an attempt to place an objective measurement on the utterly subjective.
While it's true there are certain things that have been, through time, proven to make a work of art better, you're bound to find plenty of examples or works going against those rules and still being great (or following them to the t and falling completely flat).
Example:
>Face is too dark, should be the brightest part of the frame as it is the subject.
This is simply not true. I understand where it's coming from, that the subject should be the focal point, and that a focal point is created where there is light, but there are plenty of examples of subjects being darkened and the piece still being powerful.
Personally OP's photo looks nice to me. While the criticism he gave were fair, they certainly didn't defeat the piece.

These are very weak due to 3 things:
-weak and sluggish composition
-uninteresting light
-little or no postprocessing - you can make those pictures 10x more interesting just with some curves tweaks and 1 minute of dodge&burning
-pro tip - whenever I shoot indoors with natural light first I walk around the apartment looking for an interesting light. If I don't find it I try to create some playing with curtains if possible. Once I find a good spot then I ask the model to pose there after explaining her the angles towards the light and then I feel like I'm not even needed there anymore to make good photos
>>3107969
It is nice. I would have toned the brightness a little, maybe darkened the corners a bit...but that's really a question of personal taste. Good job, anon.
>>3107999
I won't really nitpick on the technique itself, cause i think it's really a model or direction problem.
Her arm gesture feels fake, she clearly does it like you told her to, or because she thought this would be a nice magazine look. It's clearly not nice, and it's boring. Also her "staring at the horizon with a sensual hope" look is not working, and she looks dumb.
You would know better if it's a direction problem or a dumb model issue. But usually, it's a bit of both.

Awkward sharpening with local healing and blur. Google frequency separation and just sharpen locally, e.g. her eyes lips, some of her hair. Besides this, forearms and hands could be better arranged. Cut a tad from the left side.

>>3109567
the skin tones are MUCH better on the original
Did you use the clarity slider to get the after pic?
Don't use it on portraits, especially not portraits of old people. Best would be never to use it on anything, there are better ways of sharpening/local contrast. I know you can see it online a lot on amateur pics but I can assure you nobody likes a portrait of themselves where they look pale with exaggerated wrinkles.
If you do no other retouching to her face whatsoever, I would brighten her irises and remove most of the stray hairs on this pic. Especially on the right where they reflect the light. This is a million times easier in photoshop.
>>3109839
Thanks for the feedback. What's the best way to emphasize wrinkles? I dropped the saturation to make her paler, and increased the structure (whatever that is) to make the creases in her face more pronounced. I didn't want her to look like a modern woman with health insurance and indoor plumbing.

Her nose is pretty stubby, and the lighting is too extreme with no fill light. I'd have turned her chin to her left about 45 degrees to try to fix both of these.
Also I think the flowers would look better closer to her. White flowers on darker background more contrast. Now half the flowers as you have it are against a white background and blends in too much.
