i think in this day and age, a professional ______ (if it's something creative in that blank) doesn't really need a degree in their field. there's such a wealth of free knowledge available in so many areas that you can learn more or less everything that's covered in a degree on your own

This is wrong. Unless you have connects it's an uphill battle to establish yourself. No one respects photographers and the job market is saturated, so there are few decent paying consistent jobs out there. Having a degree matters and helps a ton if for anything it assists in legitimizing you and your day rate. Every dickhead has a camera and every she bitch does too.
There's no such thing as a professional photographer my man.
