I've wondered that myself. It's just very aesthetic with great architecture. Lots of raw materials with not much in the way of gaudy facades. Lots of repeating patterns. Everything is nice, clean, well-maintained, and orderly. Good city planning. The people are respectful which means it's not littered with trash, vandalism and graffiti. So, are you seeing that with just my 120 images, or my 135 shots too? I ask for two reasons.
One, the 120 stuff was sort of underexposed so there's just a lot of noise/grain in the blacks in those.
Two, is these were all scanned with the same exact film, scanning hardware and software, and settings as all the film stuff I've shot in the last ~7 years. The only thing that's changed is my monitor, which may or may not be properly calibrated. Or, at least calibrated slightly differently than my last monitor. I did attempt to calibrate it before scanning all these but it was just a simple software calibration. It's very possible that it's a bit off.
If you have a properly calibrated monitor and could pick a shot that you think is possibly a result of a poorly calibrated monitor on my end, could you do a quick level adjustment and post it here? That'd help me out.

Thanks. It's definitely a great camera. Not perfect, but the fact that I can slip it in my pants pocket and always have it with me where ever I go is a huge plus.
And in the side-by-side comparison shots I did with it and my 645 using Portra, I was having a really hard time differentiating between the two after processing. Before I got this camera I was thinking the GR would replace the 35mm for snaps, while I'd still do all my 'serious' stuff with the 645. The more I use it, the more I'm realizing it's the other way around.

I don't know. I have my own thoughts on the matter but they mostly have to do with intangibles and sound pretentious and hipstery. But yea, d range and tones do play a large part in it, as does noise/grain structure. Which is why I like the GR since it seems to be similar to film in those respects.

Thanks. But yeah, a big chunk of my shooting is done at night or indoors with 400 speed film and a 50mm lens, so I don't have the luxury of stopping down too much. I almost always try to stop down as much as possible but I do favor shutter speeds about a stop higher than I generally need to as I absolutely hate shake and motion blur. There are exceptions of course but most of my outdoor daytime shots are done at hyperfocal.

Thank you very much. I did a lot of traveling when i was in my 20s by taking contract engineering jobs. Work 9 months a year, travel for 2-3, rinse and repeat. Now I work full time and my company is pretty awesome so we have unlimited PTO. My trip to Japan I actually came back with more money in my bank account than I left with.

I'll just be bringing my fujifag digital rig, though. I shoot Hasselblad for film and that's too much extra crap to schlep. On the photographic upside though, I'm going because I work in the anime industry and I'll be at Wonder Festival and Comiket, so expect some shots of cosplay QTs in addition to the normal Japan stuff.

Thanks. I'm in software. The company I work for is at 500+ employees now but we've had pretty rapid growth in the last couple years and we're privately funded so we've still been able to hang on to that small company/startup mentality. I'm in Boston too, so there's a lot of competition for good software engineers here. Lots of companies will do whatever they can to attract them, leading to lots of great workplaces, perks, culture, etc. Definitely a great field to get into.

Cool, those are two great places to shoot. Really though I don't think I can single any one place out as my favorite. Maybe Kabukicho/Shinjuku? Over my two trips there I've spent about 6 weeks combined in Tokyo so I've probably been to just about every major area around the main part of the city, and every place I've been was pretty awesome for shooting so you really can't go wrong. If you go to my website linked in the OP I have another Japan post from my first trip there when I was in Tokyo for 4 weeks, you can check that out for some more ideas as well.

The 135 shots were all with a 50mm, the 120 shots were with a 35mm equivalent, and the digital shots were all either 28mm or 35mm equivalent.
You can generally tell by the aspect ratio. All the 135 are 3:2 and the 120 and digital are 4:3. The digital shots have the FL in the exif data.

The feeling of being inundated in a crammed urban jungle is very appealing to people.
Ask people what they hate about urban areas or what the least appealing cities are. They will universally converge on a few details that make a city NOT photogenic: Such as too many short buildings spread out over a wide area, wide streets with no immensely tall buildings flanking said streets. So basically, anything that is the opposite of the suburban aesthetic, will be very photogenic.

Japan is the best for photography. It's like going skiing/snowboarding to the alps. There's much more challenge but it's also much more rewarding than anywhere else I've been to. Some people seem to think you can just walk into Shinjuku and shoot street from the hip and be the next Daido but it really doesn't work like that.

Thanks. The digital shot was on my GR and the other one was on an old Minolta SLR with Portra. If I was buying film in Tokyo though I'd skip Kodak in favor of Fujifilm. Much cheaper and their pro line is great.

Thanks. Ahhhh I don't think I can pick a favorite. I generally try to think of my images in the context of being viewed as a set, not so much individually. If we're talking like, in terms of how successful I was at executing what I wanted to get out of the image, probably this one >>3096833. I have to let these sort of settle in so I can view them more objectively. They're still too new to me. In a few months I'll go back to make a few prints and we'll see which ones I end up going with and which ones, if any, end up on my wall.

You can get it from Yodobashi or Bic Camera tax free if you show them your passport. And they should have a further 10-15% discount on top of that.
I recommend the GR or RX100 M3 if you want something truly pocketable. But the X100F is also a great camera.

The best thing aboutshopping camera junk in Japan is IMO:
1)The breadth of selection in big retail stores
2) The pristine condition of used goods. Not going to find many super deals there either (unless you try to scavenge the Junk bin in Fujiya or something), but prices are generally acceptable for what you get, and again, you can find all kinds of stuff that would be relatively rare in a place like ebay for example.
Really, if you want cheap gear, stalk ebay or craigslist.

Not to mention you can try everything out.
Go to Yodobashi and there is an a9 and GFX on display for you to play with (that 20 fps is nuts btw).
The good thing about Yodobashi/Bic aren't the prices, but the point cards. You get 10% back in points from every purchase. Considering you can buy pretty much anything at a Yodobashi, this adds up pretty damn fast.

I was thinking about an X70, but Yodobashi didn't even seem to have it. (They had everything else Fuji makes, and a bunch of X70 accessories on display, but not the camera itself.) I was thinking about an RX100 but the M3 was like a grand there, and saving the tax doesn't really make up the difference. I was hoping to find something worthwhile for $500-ish.
Maybe I'll try Bic today, and I was also thinking of going to Nakano sometime next week.

Actually I just totally lucked out today. Ended up going back to Yodobashi and they were having a 10,500 yen off flash sale thing on the RX100Mk3, and then I got an extra 5% off for using a foreign Visa card, so it worked out to around 60,000, which is about $550 USD. Pretty damn good considering the same thing costs $700+ at most US retailers and the only penalty I pay is Japanese menus. (No big deal to me since all cameras have pretty much the same options and 90% of everything is English terms written in Katakana anyway, so I can read it without too much trouble.)

For me, it's just the kind of city I'm inspired to shoot most. It's super photogenic. I try to shoot the same 'style' everywhere I go but it really lends itself to large, Asian cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, etc. I've had luck in New York when I go there to shoot too, but more often than not when I head down there I just end up partying my face off and don't take many pictures.

I'm being crazy and doing a day trip, first Shinkansen out of Tokyo and last one back. I know it'll probably be swamped but my schedule is tight and I'd like to get down there at least a little bit, it's my favorite part of Japan and I was supposed to be there all week but the typhoon fucked me over.
I may decide to grab a last-minute room and stay the night, but I for sure need to be back in Tokyo on Friday for Comiket and I have some work to finish by then. (I work for a Japanese company in the anime industry and they're exhibiting at Comiket, so I don't have much choice about being there, even though I'm not that interested in buying much there.)

Sadly I didn't, I hope I can go eventually. I only had two days in Kyoto this trip thanks to the typhoon, but it sounds like I should be going back to Japan this winter so maybe I'll visit Kyoto again.

I may be a little biased, but I certainly prefer Kyoto over Tokyo. I tell everyone who comes to weight it at least 50:50 with Tokyo.

I work for a Tokyo-based company and I'm a kimo-ota so there's a lot there to interest me, but Kyoto is definitely the best /p/ city. It's especially great as a Fuji shooter, Velvia feels like it was made explicitly for Kyoto's light and vegetation, which is actually probably not far from the truth.

I was actually talking about digital "Velvia," but I love the real thing too. I'd love to take a real film camera to Japan, but I shoot Hasselblad and that's a fuckton of weight to schlep around. I mostly shoot Tri-X when it comes to film, simply because it's so easy to develop.

Yea, not a fan of Fuji's color modes. Easier and better done in post if you ask me.
Actually have my first roll of Tri-X loaded into my camera right now. I feel like I am missing a lot with the images being black and white, but my mind might change after I get it developed.
As for cameras, I have been wanting to get a 500cm myself, but I doubt I would use it enough. Shooting on a Minolta CLE right now. Nice little rangefinder.

I like it, but I prefer 35mm. The GR has a built-in 35mm crop mode that I use more often than not. In fact if you go through the exif data on my GR shots in this thread it tells you whether they were shot at 28 or 35mm, and I believe you'll find that most were shot at 35.
I also only shoot in 3:4 aspect ratio (as opposed to 2:3), which is another built-in feature in the GR. I've loved that aspect ratio ever since I started shooting with 645 film and the fact that the GR can auto-crop all my images at 3:4 from the get go is awesome. So at 3:4 and 35mm there's a fair bit of cropping going on before I ever even press the shutter, but I was never a huge stickler over megapixels anyway. My 3:4 35mm shots with the GR are for all intents and purposes identical to my Portra 645 shots taken in the same conditions.
