This forum is full of harsh criticism. It's one thing that most users' photos suck, but /p/ even hates the photos of famous pros.
Post a photo you think is actually good, from any genre. Let's see if we can agree on some standard of quality.
One of my favorite snowboard images of all time. 2013 Red Bull Illume winner.
I love Fan Ho, I'm thinking of buying one of his prints
I was even inspired to visit Hong Kong, obviously his photos were taken at a different time and I'm not that good but it is still awesome for photography
Roy Arden, "Development," 1993 (shot on 4x5)
Roy Arden is like a realer version of Jeff Wall. This photo ticks all the boxes for being considered good, here's why.
The light and colour is optimum: it was shot in the evening so there is a strong, direct illumination of the scene from a low angle that retains the density and texture in the sky, and the large format film does a good job of reproduces the rich areas of colour without transforming them into an artificial over-saturated mess. The scene selection was either very judicious or insanely serendipitous--the photographer probably returned to this site several times during the course of its construction in order to capture the appearance of the building in a semi-completed state that simultaneously exhibited an array of different levels of completion. The composition is simple, but in a complex or subtle way (in other words, it reveals of a lot of thinking about how to refine the presentation of the key elements down to their barest necessary presence--a simplicity that results from the photographer's thorough understanding and visual processing of the scene in front of the camera in a way that accesses a lucid image of what is significant for them therein). Finally, the photo is stimulating to the imagination and intellect because of the skillful way it self-evidently presents an otherwise abstract content (development, construction, etc.), it rewards individual contemplation and relates thoroughly to the rest of Arden's photographs from the series.

Please share how in the world you came to that conclusion. Its a phenomenal photos in terms of composition, scale, lighting, and planning.
> “It was basically just flashed from behind with two big Elinchrom Rangers,” he explains. “I had a 4-second exposure in order to get a bit of light from the moon into the dish. I’d done a lot of testing on this thing during the summer, and when winter came I pretty much knew how to light everything up.”

Sadly they stripped the paint off because it didn't have all that much effect in terms of reflecting heat/radiation, the novelty of a having a shimmery white shuttle wore off after the mainden launches, and they figured they could save the 600lbs of paint for other payload. Art is subjective, I don't care for this one.
>>3095224
Actually, art is "inter-subjective". Meaning that it is capable of acting as an objective medium for thoughts and ideas that are otherwise only subjectively accessible. Precisely for this reason (viz., art is an attempt to create universally- or at least collectively- accessible forms of individual experiences) the function of art CAN and MUST be understood and discussed in objective terms. If it were not so, it would be impossible both to assess the successes and failures of artistic undertakings, as well as to improve artistic forms themselves. Repeating the hackneyed phrase "art is subjective" is simply an excuse to avoid the difficult work of thinking about art and, moreover, of comprehensibly if not persuasively formulating and presenting these thoughts to other people. If anything, it signifies that your own thoughts and feelings about art--rather than art itself--are stultifyingly subjective.

There's a lot more impressive nude photographers out there. I understand how as a man and a big photographer who shoots nudes how you can be tempted to do what he and others have done like that french guy who killed himself last year, but it's probably best left alone.
There's a slippery slope with erotic photography a lot of people end up going down.

Someone doesn't understand flash photography.
The sky is black behind the snowboarder. Popping him with a rim flash will give a perfect silhouette. If there was a city or some lights directly behind him you may see through him a bit...but since there's absolutely no light back there the silhouette comes out as crisp. That type of photo is all about controlling ambient light with artificial.

Mine too, I went to Columbia Elementary when I was a kid. All of the schools in our area were named for the Shuttles and some of the people who flew on them.
Fun fact: the Endeavor was named in a contest amongst the schools by kids. NASA pieced it together from spare parts after Challenger exploded but didn't have a name for it so they turned to elementary school children to name it and some kid thought of that and NASA went with it.
