Hey /p/
What in your opinion makes a great photographer? Is it technical ability, a good eye, the willingness to put yourself in uncomfortable situations? I love taking pictures, and some of them I am very proud of, but I find myself being reluctant to really enter the world of photography. So many people are taking beautiful pictures, that lack creativity or inspiration, and it just comes off as pretentious to me. I'm not trying to bag on or belittle casual photographers, I'm more asking what you all think are the qualities that separate the casual from the artist.
My main interest is underwater photography, pic related in a photo I took in Hawaii a few years back.

Lots of money and ability to travel the world and take 10,000 pictures a day.

This guy sounds like the kind of fella who has the FIRE in his soul to make the BIG league.

Yes. The problem is, nobody can accurately gauge their own level of mastery (SPOILER: IT'S ALWAYS VERY LOW). You also have to make sure your pictures address something people give a shit about.

I'm an amateur underwater photographer as well.
But the best advice with regards to underwater photography was to network, in scuba diving circles you'll always find photography enthusiasts, they'll refer you to people/friends who run courses plus its a great way to purchase decent second hand gear.

Yay for underwater photography!
Over where I live there is no business for underwater photography. Except for shooting baby swimmers. But unfortunately running a photography business is more about running a business than it is about photography...

It is pretentious as fuck that you'd think photos need "creativity or inspiration". Like, straight out of the artfag circle jerk.
All you need for a good photo is a nice, clean shot of something people don't usually see. This may also just mean a common sight, but now presented to foreigners. Or fairly common underwater views to people who don't seriously dive.
It does not generally require your creativity.
