I like the zig-zag, nice timing. Next time try and use 1/1000s or faster shutter speed.
>>
>>3087742
I like it, but yeah, what >>3087748 said.
1/400 (or thereabouts) have it's purpose for big or very close birds. If you nail the focus, you can get an interesting effect, where the body/head is sharp/stationary, while still capturing the movement of the wings. Unless you're going for that, 1/1000+ is preferable.
>>
>>3087742
>>3087748
I forgot to add, it is okay to let the ISO go up to 3200, the new sensors noise ratio can take it well.
I usually shoot at 1/1600s minimum and go up if possible, ISO 800 and above.

Thank you guys for the feedback; I'm still pretty new to photography in general and I definitely appreciate any help. I didn't really expect the osprey to fly right over me, I was mostly just taking ocean photos.

It's the Japanese subspecies here in Longu Islando China. But since birds migrate and occasionally leave Japan the natives likely view them as subhuman, like foreigners and Japanese who have lived abroad and been tainted, so their citizenship status is rather dubious.

thanks for the tip, it's just super hard to get those action shots. I'm just starting this and don't have a great lens or camera. I try to shoot full manual and I think my biggest problem is having the shutter speed too low, also tracking is hard especially for fast birds. any tips for that or it just comes with practice?

But amphibians do more than just live on land and in water instead the class is defined by whether they are amniotes (meaning they lay eggs with amnions) or not. Ducks and cormorants both lay eggs containing amnion therefor they can not be considered amphibian.

Sunny days or time of day with ample sunlight hitting the bird will make flight pictures much more possible.

If you know where they hunt or frequent, that will make it easier to be ready. Depending on the length of your lens, you'll want anywhere from 1/320 to 1/800 or more if you can afford it to really freeze it in flight. Using constant AF is very helpful especially for moving subjects.

If you have a flash unit, it can be very helpful if you're within distance. A flash extender is also very inexpensive and popular among birding professionals. I use one and it really helps to bring out the details of birds in flight or at rest.

Good luck.

Thanks I shoot with a sigma 18-200 I know its not top of the line but I just do this as a hobby and I got a good deal on it plus I can pretty much use it for everything. I usually shoot around 1/200 so yeah that's probably my problem. I don't own a flash and am kind of confused as to how I would get close enough in the first place. I check and my af is on "live mode" the other options are ":) live mode" and "quick mode" I usually manual focus though because I thought af wouldn't be fast enough thanks for the help btw
>>
>>3089358
Don't worry about the lens. 200mm is still enough, or if you're on an APS-C camera, then it's around 320mm equivalent.

For now I would just say focus on the bird being in good lighting and having your shutter at a higher speed ready to go. Use Al Servo mode if you're shooting with a canon because that is what you need to keep the camera constantly focusing on a moving subject.

Bird photography requires lots patience and effort so don't be discouraged. It just takes time to refine. Keep it up.

>>
>>3089640
>receive criticism
I've barely seen any criticism in this thread yet. The words 'shit' and 'good' in isolation aren't criticism, and it's hardly even bashing, it's just plain shitposting.

Criticism is when you leave the person you're judging with room to improve by letting them know what you feel they did wrong. People can still disagree with your judgement, but at the least it will be founded on some objective or subjective factors which can be further discussed.

There is no further discussion here, which is why people are calling out for being a huge faggot. There's generally a good chance you'll be called that on /p/ anyway, but this time you genuinely deserve it.
>>

>call photos shit with no reasoning to back it up

>>
>>3089674
No number of months or years will ever be enough for a shit like you. I can tell you I've been shooting for 10 years and you'll flip the argument around and say "Your photos are still shit after 10 years". That's all you're capable of.

You and every other Shit/Good/Shit judge have failed to express or explain the basis for your judgement. The most you'll offer up is throwing out "Composition" or "Lighting". But you never breakdown the specifics, because in all honesty you have no idea how either one works either.
>>
>>3089697

The only people who need to explain themselves are the ones who took those shitty photos and uploaded them.
>>
>>3089640
>criticism

Criticism is something you can act upon. You have to say what area is lacking so that the person can improve in that area.

Otherwise it's just like your opinion man.
>>
>>3089697
They'll never explain their judgement because they're afraid whatever they say will reveal them as not knowing as much as they act like they do, because they probably don't.

How to explain one's self when all that has been said is "It's Shit"? All you're doing is inviting people into your endless stupid trap to criticize every corner. There won't be an "Oh I see, sorry for my misunderstanding" at the end if someone 'explains' themself. There won't be any actual advice offered up BASED on your own experience and work. None of it.

Basically just fuck off if you have nothing to add. People adding pictures are speaking through the pictures. All you're doing is slinging shit at the people who actually put 2 shits more effort than you ever did.

I'd say, while rude, this is pretty spot-on.

Lots of bad composition, subject clipping, terrible backgrounds, harsh lighting, back lighting, etc. Things I delete in-camera.

Yes, because he's so eminently qualified to have THE objective opinion on something as abstract and subjective as photography. This isn't a get-off-from-criticizing-photography thread, and we were all having a perfectly good time until the armchair professors came in. Take that shit to the recent photo toilets where people are looking for critique.

So basically "I know what you are but what am I?" argument. Please leave.

>>3088849
King fisher are so hard to catch in general. But you even managed to catch one with food in it's mouth. Great job. Looks like it had to be a heavy crop (which is understandable due to it's size and your equipment limitations), but wonderful effort.

>>3088843
Great colors, I love that they are sleeping. It makes me feel like I could also relax if I were there. These pigeons are really enjoying a nice quite day under the remaining cherry blossoms.

>>3089967
That's cute.

>>3089333
That is quite a lot of detail there. Well captured with the water droplets and fine detail on the hairs. Looks like icewater in the back. Would have liked more reflection with that kind of water personally, but still interesting.

>>3088238
Another one with great detail. Very sharp. I love that the light orb makes me think of a sun setting in some way. The foliage helps to nest that 'sun' while the bird is lost in thought next to it. It's a neat shot. The bird has a lot of character, very unusual looking. Looks half grumpy sort of kind of lol.

>>3089609
I really enjoyed this. The contrast is really interesting to me and birds which are not usually known for their color or aesthetic traits can sometimes be so well represented in black and white (such as crows). Because it's sort of an 'ugly' bird, I really feel the dark/light contrast brings out the grotesqueness of it. The feet harness really adds to that. (Like being imprisoned/slave)

>>3090363
It's an interesting shot but it is definitely not my personal favorite in the thread.

>>3090370
This is nice. The colors of the bird are pleasing, the surrounding flora being not so bright doesn't take the attention away from the bird, and helps to create a very nice atmosphere.

I attached an edit (based on personal preference). Slight light adjustment and color temperature shift. I really think it's a good picture you took. Nice work.

Yeah I took it and I loved the black/white aspect, its not a pretty bird but as you say it looks like a prisoner or a slave, at the same time it also reminds me of a silent movie, those feet movements look almost Chaplin like in the way they waddle. Its a very human moment from a very odd looking bird.

These are not shitty photos. They are only shitty to you because this is /p/ and most of the people lurking this board now are people who come here to just drop shit and call everything a snapshit.

As man anon said before, why don't you post your incredible award winning photo. Enlighten all of us as to what a superior piece of work is. Calling it a snapshit does very little to tell us what anyone is doing "wrong" let alone what your definition of "right" is.

Snapshit might as well be another adjective for "fucking amazing" as far as I'm concerned. But no, snapshitanon is afraid to actually afraid to reveal the mere fact that he has zero understanding of anything. You probably know better than anyone that the true snapshit here is yourself.

>>3090975

You wouldn't have gotten very far with 10-year-old gear.

The best part about this thread is we get to watch you try to pixel peep 1000px D60 jpegs that have already gone through severe web compression so you can whine about artifacts and come up with new and exciting reasons to shit on them. Try harder, fag. I know autism sucks but please try and contain yourself.

>haloing, don't see any, maybe point it out?

You still haven't explained anything other than just attacking technical value of the photo. Anything which wasn't technical, you didn't even care to explain or give feedback on.
>>
>>3090982

>>

Not blaming the gear, just saying....noise used to be something inherent in photography and we dealt with it.

Not every photo has to be an artistic circlejerk, man. A picture can just be a picture, even if it doesn't meet your "enlightened" standards.
>>
>>3090997

>I know it is shit, but posted it anyway
>>
>>3090995
Nobody called it a masterpiece you shitter. The photo isn't perfect. If you want an example of how to critique here you go:

The sun shining down on the bird like it's standing under a spotlight on the stage (which is the light fixture) is interesting. It's legs being crossed in that fashion make it seem like it's truly basking in glory in front of an invisible audience. That's what makes it worthwhile to me as a composition. That's what I see.

The cropping and framing could have been better, a vertical cut would have helped with the spotlight effect so that there isn't too much blue. Or some light adjustment of the backround and subject could have been rebalanced to help more attention go to the subject. Overall decent photo/idea.

But no, you'll disagree with this and just say snapshit, oh muh noise, it has noise and a small 10 px segment of the photo is blown out hrnggggngngngn. And if that is so, why don't you take the time to educate me as to what could have made this 'perfect', what would you have done? But no, you don't want to because that would lead to a possible debate of photography ideas.

you're reading pretty far into it. i could see the part about the stage/spotlight but i can barely even see it's legs being crossed and i definitely can't figure out why it's legs being crossed would mean any of that

This is exactly the point. This is the very reason nobody leaves real feedback, because you're all afraid to have your 'photography eye' criticized. Instead, you prefer to give no explanation and pounce on the first person the take a step forward. In that process, you cite only world renowned acckmplished photographers as the absolute standard.

This is exactly what is wrong with /p/. It is no longer a place to understand other people's artistic opinions in a civilized and rational manner.

Yet still nobody provided any actual reasoning for their criticism to this opinion and the general photo. You are STILL hiding and unwilling to express your thoughts in full.

The very fact that you cannot feel confident in your own idea of a photo to discuss in in full shows just how amatuer and how insecure you really are with respect to photography.
>>
>>3091144

No, casuals posting snapshits and making excuses for them are the problem.
>>
>>3091154
Is isi a casual, then?
I think the real issue is visually illiterate retards that can't tell snapshits from intentional aesthetics.
Most of the shitposters on this board only have a taste for generic sterile photography, like pictures of pretty girls.
>>
>>3091154
>responds with something that only proves the other guy's point
>>
>>3091154
The criteria for snapshits has still not been established. Its hopeless with /p/ anyways. People who are serious about photography dont hang around this nonsense anyways. Its just 95% new casuals and 'serious' casuals. As sad as it is, even the infamous shitty Jason Lanier is better than all you 'critiques', only because hes out there making money out of what he shoots. Meanwhile all you super judges are not making a cent and the most you do is sit here judging your daily world competition. Youre worse than that fat fucktard. BUt your refusal to own your own style and concept out in the vast ocean of criticism speaks volumes about how your skill as a photographer: most likely zero. Cant improve if you cant take criticism like a real photographer. Cant improve if you cant be open to other peoples concepts either. It goes both ways.

It isn't a snapshit, it's just not great.

Not a whole lot of detail, and the subject is too dark in relation to the background.

When you're forced to shoot a bird against a sky background, expose for the bird... damn the sky. If it wants to blow out, let it. Better than fucking your subject. At birding focal lengths, there isn't going to be any sky detail to worry about keeping anyway... it's well out of focus.

It's not the same as "exposing for highlights" in a landscape shot, where the sky is part of the overall image.

This is a bird thread not a wildlife thread asshole. Zoos are just fine. Besides, a bird is a bird. It takes just as much effort to get a shot at a zoo. Maybe more actually, because you are limited by the enclosures. You can't just wander around the bird like in the wild and get any angle shot you please. You have to actually WORK for it.

Also, some of us can't get out into nature, or maybe have a very rational fear of wild animals. Ever consider that?

Fuck you.

Still no reasoning as to why it's "Shit". According to earlier techspec anon, this picture is Sharp, Front lit, Centered, has detail, no noise, no haloing, not a boring subject, not too low in frame, the choice of exposure gives this eerie feel to it. Looks good to me to be completely honest.

>>3091515
Wow really? This is a picture of a bird in the same manner as a human model. So you're telling me that a picture of models in a studio are worthless snapshits then because they are "10 feet away and broken" and because we aren't taking photos of them in the streets "in the wild" that it's amateur? Again, just another shit head that needs to justify some kind of value to one type of shooting.

So as far as I can tell, it's been called a snapshit because you just don't like it, and not for a valid reason and that's it.

If you have actually gone and shot in the wild for real, then yes you can find a plethora of interesting birds. That's why you go to wildlife parks and bird sanctuary where there are a high population of known migratory or non-migratory birds indigenous to that area. Unless you want to say that bird sanctuarys are not real wild or some bullshit like that.
>>
>>3093430

>>
>>3093494
I'd argue that there's still more constraints than in a zoo. Unless you've been sitting in a hide for a few hours it's near impossible to get close to some species, and there's always geographical features like water bodies or thick vegetation that limit how close you can get.
>>
>>3093430
Sanpshit, you should pay attention to the background as well, that duck is very distracting.
Also it is underexposed, correct it in LR. With white subjects you will need to put the exposure correction in +0.5-1

Even a Canon 700D with the EF-S 55-250 will do nicely.
>>
>>3093691
D7000 with the screwdrive 300mm f4 Nikkor would be a pretty great start for under $800 and then you don't lose money moving up from entry level crap. Get a 1.4x teleconverter if 300mm isn't doing it for you, the lens is said to pair well with them.

My mom yelled at me to get a picture. I had a zoom 50mm on crop. I had to crop the shit out of the picture. All her stupid facebook friends love it.

Now, I have to bird watch with her all Saturday. She wants a pic of the humming bird that eats out of her feeder
