How safe, or unsafe, is it to take my a7 out in a light rain? Obviously nothing heavy, but I feel uncomfortable having it out even in a drizzle.
Also does anybody use any sort of weather proofing? What do you use and how do you like it?

You could use an umbrella or very cheap chinese-made camera bag.
But I don't think I'd think very much about using it in light rain. It'll probably be fine.
>>3082920
Yeah, the longer I've had it the more I think it'll be okay in some rain. I'm just no in a financial position to ruin a camera body right now, but I do want to take some street photos in the rain.
I guess I'll never know until I try? I just haven't heard much about people shooting in some rain.

Light rain, it's probably safe so long as you wipe it off consistently enough and the lens has a weather sealed rubber ring.
Not an A7, but took my 6Ds out in pretty steady straight up rain (not light rain, not a downpour) and the cameras are still kicking no issues a year later.
Or, if you're really worried about it - you could get a lens coat, and this would mitigate most of your issue.

Awesome, thank you.
Yeah I did think about bringing something to keep wiping it down.
>>3082927
Thanks, I'll check it out.

The A7 is not weather proof, lots of reports about corrosion if you search Google for "Sony A7 corrosion".

When I first got my A7 it was back when Sony was still calling their cameras weather sealed and I took the thing out in light rain with an Olympus 50mm 1.8 and it was fine. I wouldn't take it out in a downpour like it was a D4s, but you should be fine.
>>3083037
Yeah I'll never take it out in heavy rain. Thank you.
>>3083011
That's disappointing.

The a7 line is weather sealed, not weather proof, I've taken mine in very heavy downpours with no issue. The difference between the 2 is an ip rating.
That shot of the corroded insides was from someone that dropped their camera in the ocean and lived in a beach front property.

I borrowed a 6D and took it in some light rain. I told the owner and they were freaking out. It was totally fine of course. Great camera. Most cameras are fine with some light rain. For anything else I would recommend something that is advertised as weather sealed. Not because I think it's going to do better but because when something goes wrong it should be covered by the warranty.
took my camera out in a drizzle once. this was the end result. never again (with sony anyways).

If you want to shoot in the rain, get a Pentax.
>>3083322
Yeah nah they're """"moisture and dust resistant"""", and that only means that your lens or viewfinder isn't going to fog up. Sony and a lot of reviewers said that the A7 was weather sealed when it first came out (Kai pouring water on an A7 stands out to me the most), but Sony later pulled that after people realized that the cameras lacked an IP rating or any form of sealing. To this day Sony doesn't highlight any weather sealing capabilities on the A7II series of cameras.
>>3083349
This is the biggest thing. If you send your A7 back to Sony because a light drizzle fried the mic or a button, they'll just tell you to get fucked as it "exceeded the design of the camera", whereas Canikon or Pentax will generally do good on it and fix the issue.
>>3083322
Weather sealed is what Canon and Nikon top line plus Pentax entirely is. The A7 has no weather sealing, even the later A7II series with a light sealing has had the feature removed by Sony.
I feel like there should be an umbrella product that you can attach to the hot shoe of your camera.
If not, time to create that product.

I would rather invest in a real camera or just not go out that day, rather than look like a fucking krogan and get funny looks from people.
