Portra 160 or Ektar 100 for landscapes? I mean I'll try both and see what I prefer, just wanting to know what you fgt's like better.
>>
>>3080636
Superia 200 (24/36 exp) and Superia 400 (24 exp) are being discontinued while Superia 800/1600 are already discontinued. So Superia 400 36 exp will be the only one available
>>
>>3080647
For landscapes:
Positieve > Negative
P = Velvia 50/100 > Kodak E100G(RIP)
N = Ektar 100 > Portra 160

Depends on which look you prefer. Portra is a little less contrasty and has an overall softer look. At Ektar, the shadows can become greenish.

Here it is.

It is a sloppy scan just to test color and sharpness. I didn't center it perfectly.

The only other scans I have are of family and I'd rather not share those.

Gonna do some more tomorrow, but I just had a 14 hour work day and am gonna crash.

what is a cheap alternative to the ricoh gr? i´m looking for a point and shoot with a fixed wide angle lens and good iq. I´m a big fan of the GR, but I would never spend 500€ on a fucking point and shoot

just scour ebay for any point and shoot. There were thousands of models made, there will be something out there for you

Ricoh made some earlier/cheaper models of P&S cameras so maybe look into those

Shooting slide would be nice, but dev costs of around $30 per roll of 120 is just not justifiable for me, so I have to do my own deving which is why I'm sticking to c41 and b&w for now.

>>3080655
Yeah from what I've seen I think I'll like the Portra more, I guess I'll find out soon enough

>>3080669
The Ricoh R1 is like a budget GR1. They seem to be sort of scarce on eBay iirc and they aren't the most reliable, but they are pretty cheap and very small.

What's the deal with provia 400x, is it not being made, just hard to find or is it Japan only?
>>
>>3080746

Production stopped in most of the world in 2013.

Japan went on to 2015. If you get a roll from that late Japan batch it is still not expired (late 2017 is the latest I have seen).
>>
>>3080750
lame

Is there any slide films that are 400 iso or higher in production still
>>
>>3080753
Nope. Best you can get is Rollei CR200 but that's rebranded AGFA stock.
>>
>>3080754
...and AGFA comissions Fuji to coat/cut all their films now.
>>
I'm going to Cornwall next week and want to take lots of lovely landscapes. I'm taking an EOS 5, 2 rolls of Ektar 100 and a graduated ND. Anybody got any general tips to get the best results?
>>
>>3080754
I think I saw on one of Maco Rollei's clips there's gonna be a CR320 too. Wonder if that's gonna have that ugly yellow tint too.

So while Superia mostly RIPped, Natura 1600 still continues? I only brought 6 rolls of it home from Japan because I don't shoot much C41. Would be sad to see it go.

I hope Fuji has a plan with their film instead of just killing it off one by one. I generally prefer their film to Kodak. I'm fine if they just keep doing their "pro" stuff, alhough I wish they'd have kept a faster slide film around. I have a few rolls of 400X in the freezer and I'm afraid I'll love it and not be able to get more.

I've been using a Nikon N75, but today i found my grandfathers old pentax. I've been searching for a while after he passed away about a year ago. It's a Super A with two lenses a Tokina SD 70-210 1:3 and a Travenar MC 1:3 70mm. What am i in for? Looking forward to trying it. I think the viewfinder lcd's are screwed though. The little plastic tab on the top is loose (for lighting the lcd's) and i don't know if i should try to open it?

>>
>>3081069

Print film I take to Costco. Any local lab will do it just fine, it's just the issue of finding the cheapest one.

I mail slide film out since very few places do it locally anymore. Dwayne's is reputable and fairly priced.

Black and white, just do it yourself. You will be surprised how easy it is to do after your first time. You don't need a darkroom or anything, just a changing bag and a developing tank. It's way cheaper and more satisfying.

>>
>>3080963
There are a few reputable darkrooms around the LA Metropolis area although they are all expensive as hell. You are better off picking up chemicals @ FreeStyle and do everything yourself. It's much cheaper and you can have more controls over your film.

Ya sure I've never really shot in the dark though. Where I live when I'm in LA is pretty dangerous so I'd have to do some leg work to get to a safer part. Just wondering if its possible for them to come out decent with low lighting.
>>
>>3081159
Push Tri-X to 800/1600 and you'll have no problem getting correct exposures with a flash
>>
>>3081154

>want an x-600
>no working models on sale
>just four with a shutter that wont fire

Bet it is the caps, think they are easily repairable?
>>
>>3081160

Interesting I'll keep that in mind. I'm still figuring out the isos and shutter speed thing. I assume you mean the iso. Need to write that down.
>>
>>3081162
If you're new to shooting film/photography in general I would maybe learn proper exposure first before venturing into more advanced techniques like push/pull processing.

But yeah push processing is to do with ISO. So Tri-X is a 400 ISO film, but if you want it to act like a 1600 ISO film you can expose it as such (which means faster shutter speeds in low light) and then add more time in development.

Push processing = underexposing, over-developing

Pull processing = overexposing, under-developing

Push processing results in very high contrast and very high grain

Pull processing results in low contrast (ideal for shooting in difficult lighting conditions) and lower grain

If you're new to film and photography I'd recommend you read the book 'The Negative' by Ansel Adams.

Oh great an actual instructive book by a great. I was looking at a few other photographers like cartier, capa, but didn't find something like this.

My first few rolls were all messed up with exposures and shutter speeds so I'm just starting to get the hang of things. It can be discouraging at times but coming on here and looking at the greats gets me excited to go out there and do it again.

I ordered a bunch of these since I was told experimenting is encouraged with film, I'm sure a few will be good for night time shooting.
>>
>>3081167
What are you using to light meter? Does your camera have one built in or are you judging by eye or what?

You got a really good selection there, bit of everything. I'd avise starting with something like Retropan or FP4 as it will be relatively forgiving of mistakes. Leave stuff like Scala and the slide film till a bit later since it's not at all forgiving, and requires very precise exposure.

If you can buy cheap colour negative film where you live I'd recommend buying a bunch of that and just burning through it to get the general hang of film
>>
>>3081155
Yep that's the one, and part of the reason why I find it blindly being recommended stupid. It's what, $15 for a dev + scan + postage if you aren't local? Ridiculous when there are PLENTY of labs in the US. Film labs are not the elusive unicorn lots of people make them out to be. Jumping straight to mail-in processing without doing a bit of research beforehand is silly.
>>
>>3081169

I have one in the viewfinder, I have an AE-1. Didn't know about it till recently and still unsure how to use it. I keep the aperture on A for automatic, and the shutterspeed stays between 60-125 depending if i'm inside or outside. Then the iso I just always leave as is.

Ya it's a good idea to go with the cheap stuff, I get caught up in the idea of all the fancy fun film. I'll start buying some more cheap stuff though.
>>
>>3081171
Sorry, just looked. It's $11 + postage for c41, $14 + postage for e6.

Of course. Shot some Tri-X at Rome and had to push it to 1600 to get useable EVs.
Expose for the highlights and let the shadows fall wherever they may.
Make sure you use a developer that works well for pushing, e.g. D-76 (picture related), but stay away from Rodinal for that purpose.

>>
>>3081301
How's 400 handle indoor/night flash though? I'm too much of a wuss to try put a 400 ultramax through because the costs of developing are so high here. I've only ever used 400 indoor and outdoor without flash
>>
>>3081304

Never tried, but the box says thats what its for.
>>
>>3081318
Cheers, I'll give it a whirl and see what happens. I just won't shoot anything important with it.
>>
>>3081304
400 is a bit grainier than 200. Handling exposure depends on your flash. TTL = no difference for you. Adjustable flash output = half of what you choose at 200 film. Single flash output = compensate the additional stop by closing aperture.
>>
>>3081322
Thanks, anon. My MJUii doesn't allow me to change aperture or adjust flash. I've got an AE-1p but no speedlite, but don't really use it anymore. Wonder if I should pick up another compact that allows me a more manual approach.
>>
>>3081324
mju is TTL, so the only thing that changes when shooting 400 film instead of 200 is flash output. At 400, 1/30s at f/2.8 indoors is well possible and you might run into situations when flash isn't even necessary.
If developing costs are too high, consider developing the film youself. bw is very easy and as long as you got hot water coming from your tap, c41 shouldn't be a problem either.

The examples I've seen aren't consistent with my experience with expired film, maybe adox/agfa was cold stored from new?

Thanks very much for the response. For the record, what does TTL stand for?

Yeah, the next step is developing myself, considering I'm going through so many rolls. I'm almost addicted to it, there's something about film. My DSLR is gathering dust now.

Anyway, yeah, I got a bit of work done today with no flash on 200, then put in some ultramax 400 with no flash - we had some nice, soft natural light pouring into the room. I'll be interested to see how the 400 turns out. I know the camera somehow detects the DX code or whatever, so it makes sense that it compensates for the flash.

Honestly, this MJUii is incredible. I picked up the 35mm f2.8 version and I almost want to get another for safe keeping, Great little camera.
>>
>>3081330
You're welcome. TTL = through the lens. Basically, it's a way of measuring light at which the light sensitive cell is placed behind the lens, so it detects the light coming through the lens hitting the film. At flash TTL basically means the same, but refers to a method at which flash output is determined coupled to the measured light. Technically, your mju isn't TTL, as the light is not measured behind the lens, but it's got a built-in lightmeter with coupled flash.
I usually prefer ambient light over flash, but sometimes it's not worth the trade. Depends on the situation, so I usually end up with 200 film and use flash if I think it's necessary.
Only got the mju I, but haven't used it so far. Bought it very cheap and lent it to a friend, who tested it and then wanted me to get one for him as well, so I guess he liked it.

My glorious F100 has been giving me Err codes intermittently, especially if I haven't shot it for a while. It will throw the code when I shoot, if I shoot again it works. Doesn't matter the lens I use, I don't use 3rd party junk on it so I know it isn't that. Am I plagued with a sticky shutter?
>>
>>3081329
Is this color implosion? If so, is this an underexposed night shot, or does that film look like that when exposed correctly?
Looks like underexposed/expired superia.

>maybe adox/agfa was cold stored from new?
probably. or maybe it was "treated" in some way. ive seen some amazing shit done with color implosion, but it needs skill, id say its not a beginner film, its too much ass as it is for carefree snaps.
>>
>>3081376
Good luck with it. Hard to diagnose a sticky shutter via the internet without a video of how it operates. In some older SLRs the light seals and mirror damper can become sticky, which oftentimes lead to the mirror stuck in upturned position. Check for all possible solutions given in the link. If nothing works consider a CLA, either diy if you dare, or send it to some repair man. Better than having an expensive paper weight.
>>
>>3081388

i'll send it off, i like it too much for it to be a paperweight. guess ill finish this portra roll this week and have a look inside

you can try rubbing a pink pencil eraser on the DX contacts followed by isopropyl alcohol on a *damp* not dripping wet q-tip and canned air to dry it. I had a F100 that had some funky battery issue where corrosion of some sort wrecked the DX pins, which fucked with Fuji but not Kodak films. Cleaned it, fixed for a while, left it with a roll in for about four months, couldnt clean it, ended up just covering the pins with gaff and manually inputing. Hated that camera.

My Minolta X-700 might be bricked (shutter stopped firing), but the lens is pretty good. Im thinking of just grabbing another Minolta body cheap off ebay. Any recommendations? Particularly any with aperture priority modes--I'm still pretty new and don't shoot fully manual that much.

So, I checked at my parents place and I could find the old camera an ex-boyfriend handed me down like a decade ago. He really liked photography and used to shoot on an SLR so I guess I got a good one.

It's an Olympus AM-100, and luckily enough I didn't leave any batteries inside so the compartment is intact. Inside, there's still a roll of Superia 400 with 8 expositions left from like... 9 years ago? On the outside it's almost mint condition.

I can't wait to finish the roll up, develop to see what kind of shit surfaces and use it again.

I picked up an AE-1 Program with a camera bag full of extra shit for $100. I never use anything else other than the 50mm that's on the camera. I love it though.

Ignore the split circle, just make sure the actual image shows the correct focus.
>>
>>3082173
What is the reasoning for this? When the circle is correct I can see the subject in focus clearly but the photos don't turn out the same.
>>
>>3082176
The subject will always look 'in focus' in the circle, you have to check outside it to see what your film will see. This is why I don't like those viewfinders, when they're inaccurate you've basically got a huge useless obstacle in the middle of your frame.
>>

you really should. are you sure you dont? when do you get more impressed? when watching square pics or when watching large format or 6x7 stuff? have in mind that cropping 6x7 to square is just not the same. personally, square feels super natural to me and i get good compositions out of it intuitively, on the other hand, while i love 6x7, and in fact have a Pentax 67, i still cant get such experience with it, so, try to sort it out yourself, its a very personal thing.

The main reason for consistently missing focus while using a through-the-lens viewfinder is having it misaligned - basically the sharp focus plane of the viewfinder's surface being different than the film's. Some SLRs have the ground glass resting on a bed of foam that deteriorates with age, for example. Did you try googling your camera model's name + "focusing issues"?

Did you also take shots in bright daylight? If you did and there are no such corners, then there's most likely no light leak.
Further considering >>3082466 it is highly unlikely that you turned the camera upside down to take one of these two shots. The fact, that the problem occurs in different corners further speaks against a light leak.

What keeps you developing film?
>>
>>3082489
What makes you detest it?

I keep doing it because it's easy and far, far cheaper and quicker than having a lab do it
>>
>>3082493
I hate the process of heating up the chemicals because I have to heat the bottles up individually.

I have the Paterson tank because it's a leaky piece of shit, spilling blix all over the place.

And then I can only scan them using my old laptop because the scanner doesn't have drivers for windows 10.

The resulting image is always shitty because I'm not sure why.
>>
>>3082481
>>3082483

Its coming with an L-grip, should I even bother shooting by hand?
>>
>>3082496
So from what I gather you hate *your* version of developing film

- Heat the chemicals all up in bathtub or sink or large plastic basin and an electric kettle

- Buy another Paterson (or just do it in the bathroom so it doesn't matter if it leaks)

- What scanner do you have?

I'm almost, almost the opposite, I like dev days. C41, e-6, monochrome it's all g. Maybe take it slower and relax then it might be enjoyable, or more tolerable. I always grab a beer or a coffee and get everything prepared, then load reels and then mix chem amounts then dev. It becomes second thought after a hundred rolls.
>>
>>3082500

>>
>>3082489
I don't mind deving. Cup of coffee or glass of wine depending on time of day, put on some good music, and get to it.

I despise scanning, but becoming a digicamerascancuck helped that quite a bit.

I am pretty sure the SRT-201 focus screen does not sit on foam. I have never heard of the focus screen becoming misaligned due to foam falling apart on one.

One thing to check is that your focus screen is not in upside down. A lot of people go to clean them and fuck up orientation.

If I remember correctly, it should be matte side up.

They're fun but don't expect miracles from them.

Good for making dytichs with, and also useful for when you couldn't realistically be expected to put a new roll of film in (i.e. rock climbing, driving, underwater uses etc.)

The Olympus Pen F series, especially the SLR one, are the best of the bunch.
>>
>>3082682
If you have a dslr set up a dslr scanning system
>>
>>3082189
They're both good, it's up to preference really. Pentax might be a bit cheaper.

I own a Pentax 6x7 with the 90mm and 45mm, and also shoot a Blad with a 80mm quite often. I prefer the Pentax because of the prism and slr ergonomics. Image quality is quite similar, both very good. Pentax is loud as fuck so you can't really be subtle with it, I don't really mind though. Haven't had issues hand holding it, Blad is probably more doable at slower speeds though, I don't really go under 1/60 on the Pentax.
>>
How expensive does it get to develop and scan your own film?
I'm currently using an X-E2, and have been interested in getting into film.
>>
>>3082702
They always were a bit niche, which makes it a problematic format choice. If you end up liking the format, you might quickly end up spending much more than what you save in film costs.

I have four and I use them regularly. But for example, I only have the 38mm lens for my Pen FV & FT because the lenses are rare, expensive, and many of them aren't in good shape.

Soviet lenses are the usual bargain option for m39 (aka LTM) bodies. Besides the Industar-22 collapsible (very cool, but coating's bad and rendering is distinctly fifties) f/3.5, there's the Industar 26m f/2.8 for like $10, and then Sonnar variants Jupiter-8 (f/2, $60-ish) and Jupiter-3 (f/1.5, $180-ish).

I've got good copies of all of these, and while all Soviet glass is fairly okayish stopped down, I've found these lenses tend to veer into dreamlike rendering wide open, and all exhibit a degree of uncorrected astigmatism ("swirl") in faraway bokeh. So they're definitely the low-fi option.

But they're cheap, so grab a few and experiment. Quoth the ancient Holga masters, "picture > no picture".

You need APS film for it. I don't think it's made anymore and it's an inferior format to 35mm (only 58% as big as 35mm), so if I were you I probably wouldn't bother with finding film and then trying to find somewhere to develop that specific type of film.

Honestly the parade isn't all that great. It is extremely hot and crowded. If you do go, make sure to go to a point where they turn. Turning the omikoshi (the floats) is the most interesting part.

And yea, they should start assembling the omikoshi soon, and once they start the whole area gets closed to cars in the afternoon and food stalls and the like pop up.

Are you living in Kyoto too?

Looks like stabilizer residue. You should be able to easily see it if you hold the neg up to the light. It wipes off easily. Grab a clean microfiber and pull your film strip through it.
>>
>>3083383

Stop jizzing on your negatives.
>>
>>3081225
>>3081156
You can easily push Tri-X to 3200. With a decent, full-open 50mm you can shoot in all but pitch blackness at 1/60s. 1/30 if you have a steady hand
>>
>>3081294
No it is way easier actually
>>
>>3083421
Sadly, the c41 method is way cheaper over here in NZ, compared to traditional B&W. I might chuck this roll in my AE-1p and just use it from time to time and develop it when I'm feeling rich
>>
>>3083423
How come? I get that your remote location brings high costs of importing, but a bottle of Rodinal and a bottle of fixer will last ages. Buy 3 bottles of each and you can be shooting b/w for years

Got an mju ii , but sometimes the film advance stuck at 31 and then enter rewind mode ( 36 exp film loaded ).

some photos were cropped like this, is this common issues?

I hope not, I just bought one from a grandma lol
>>3083424
Do I need a darkroom? I honestly have no idea what I'm doing, I have wanted to get into developing myself, especially because of the price. It's the neg scanning that would be the bigger issue.
>>
>>3083428
dunno, got this one a bit problematic, maybe it's already dying soon

>>3083434
awwww, hard time having fun anon?
>>
>>3083442
Don't need a darkroom to develop film. Only the very first part of developing film (taking the film out of the roll and putting it onto a reel and into a light safe tank) needs to be done in total darkness, so you can do it in a dark bag or totally dark room (I use my bathroom after 9pm at night).
>>
>>3083442
No, you just need a 'dark room' in the literal sense of the word, i.e. a toilet with a bath towel jammed under the door, to get the film from the roll to the developing tank (light tight tank which you pour the fluids in). Google "black and white developing", there are loads of in-depth tutorials which cover way more than I can put in a post right now. Google "massive dev chart" for developing times, it has all the known combinations of various films, developers and their times, including pushing etc.
>>
>>3083445
>>3083447
Well I might seriously look into it then, especially because I've got some traditional B&W stuff from 2000 that I could probably use.

How does everyone scan their negatives?
>>
>>3083454
I use am Epson V550 (flatbed), but /p/ mostly calls them shatbeds. Granted, there are better options, like dedicated film scanners but I wanted to keep the medium format option open, only to have my Bronica ETRS break so I only use 35mm anyways
>>
>>3083458
>Epson V550
I'll pick one of these up at some point then. I'm still unhappy with the quality of the scans I get from my local

It is a cheap film camera, with good lenses (that have caught on with the mirrorless crowd), that even has a P mode.

Seeing it everywhere because it is quite popular.
>>
>>3082463
I had a similar issue when I first started out. It happens with underexposure (due to my experience).
I tried the same film stock twice- first time indoors, badly lit, second time outdoors. The first ones all had green glow and shadows. Whereas the well exposed daylight ones didn't have a single trace of green.
