Hey guys, got some new pics for ya. It's been about 5 years or so but I finally made it back to Hong Kong and Japan. Only spent 3 days in HK so I don't have nearly as many pictures as I did last time I was there, but I'm more or less happy with what I have.
There were a few snags however. First, I hadn't done this kind of medium format night city photography in a while so I was a bit rusty. I generally meter by eye in these situations and it seems my eye needed a bit of practice, so a lot of my shots were underexposed a bit which led to them being grainier than I'd have liked. I'll post a few of those toward the end so you can see what I mean.
Second, I only shot 645 Portra and my Ricoh GR digital here. Generally it was GR during the day and 645 at night. This was fine, but I came across a few housing developments during the day which I was hoping to add to my 'modern living' series, and figured the GR would work fine for this. I was wrong. Long story short, the very fine and dense tiling on the facade of a lot of these buildings did not play nice with the GR's sensor given its lack of an AA filter, so they're basically covered in moire and probably totally unusable. I'm going to try to pick a few that I really like and spend a lot of time cleaning them up but I don't have a lot of hope that they're going to turn out all that great. Really disappointed with this. Again, I'll post a couple at the end so you can see what I mean.
As always with my photo threads I like to use /p/ as a sort of staging environment for other photo sites to see what people like and what they don't, so I post a lot of the B and C sides here that wouldn't normally see the light of day. So what helps me out the most is pointing out which pictures you really like and which you really don't. Of course don't let this stop anyone from telling me to kill myself and sell my camera as well.
Going to start off with some film shots. Hope you enjoy.

After the first couple I thought maybe it was because my film was slightly expired and had been through quite a few airport x-ray machines, but then I scanned some shots like this so I think I can rule that out.

shuttermaki thread a sunday night?
instant comfy kino.
Same shot as the OP. Did this with a few of my shots actually to #1) see just how much different the GR is from medium format film, and #2) to work on doing more fine-tuning to my LR presets to facilitate #1.

I really like the taxis out in HK and I felt like I didn't take enough pictures of them last time I was there, so I did a little miniseries on them thsi time around. Basically just composed pictures I liked and then waited for a lone taxi to get in frame to complete the shot.

All I shoot now is Portra 400. I've never seriously shot slide film. Dunno why, just not my thing. Color negative has always been my jam and Portra is the best color negative film I've ever used so I just stick with that.

you seem well experienced, so you might already know that lower asa (ie. 160) gives you better IQ and less grain, and that slide film would give you even less grain and even denser, sharper image. 400 on tripod at night seems like a gross misshap.

Why is this board so obsessed with traveling to HK, Japan, and Iceland to take completely forgettable snapshits? Is it because of the weebery?
It seems like half of you aren't capable of taking a photo that doesn't rely on the novelty of culture shock.

This is embarassing. Take it to /trv/ if you can't put in a modicum of effort. Taking a camera with you when you travel makes you an average tourist, not a photographer.

Interesting project but the pictures gat a bit samey after a while, Michael Wolf has already done that. Check out his Architecture of Density and Transparent Cities books for inspiration. In fact you'd probably appreciate a lot of his stuff.
There's life in the project yet though and 'modern living' encompasses more than just apartment blocks. But you'll need to commit more time to it and get to know your cities well. I think that will be your biggest challenge

Unfortunately everyone's already done everything. I've seen his stuff, and have actually talked with him a bit over email.
My original inspiration for the project was Gursky, it just manifested itself in HK apartment buildings. I'm thinking Wolf had the same idea.

I like these. The photos that have the most geometric precision are the most interesting to me. The others have a great mood to them, but look more like reference photos for Ghost in the Shell or something.
I can see the Gursky influence in these photos in particular, and it's not a bad thing, but maybe take that and spin it a little?
Hey SM, awesome to see you post again. Loved your old stuff. These new images aren't as successful, and I think the primary reason is you went in knowing what/how to shoot without actually slowing down to re-evaluate what you were seeing. Seeing old things with old eyes, if you will. Your old stuff was successful because it was you seeing things afresh. The first bite of something new is always the tastiest, any preceding bite has everything but the surprise. I fell into the same trap for awhile, led to a few years of pictures that weren't as good as the predecessors. Stop chasing what was, and start looking for what is.
Some general comments:
>Lack of human elements
A lot of these are just the same thing repeated with different facades. Waiting for someone at a window, or looking for something particularly interesting within the scene would have been beneficial (though surely much more time-consuming).
>The grain sucks unfortunately
These images (totally see the Burtynsky influence) really require crisp quality to let the details shine. I hate being an IQfag, but for this kind of stuff it's necessary.
TL;DR
You went back with the old kit of parts (aesthetics/organization) you assembled on your previous trip(s), thus failing to be in the moment while shooting, resulting in forgettable photos.
Wew are there a lot of assumptions in this post.
>>3080486
>>3080496
Thanks. I think the biggest thing was that I only had 3 days to shoot here, where before I had 2 weeks. I don't even think I hit my stride last time until I was almost a week in. Hard to really get into the mood of a city when you're only there for a weekend. If I got 20 or so photos I was happy with last time in 14 days, I'd be happy with a similar hit rate this time giving me 4 or 5, which I think I got. It's nice having anything to add to that project I started so long ago.
That, combined with being out of practice for a while (and that shitty moire problem which ruined a good number of my shots) and I wasn't expecting much more than I got. If this was another 2 week trip, yeah, I'd be a little disappointed. But for 72 hours in HK I'm really happy and honestly just had a blast to be out shooting again. I've been working too hard lately and this trip was just what I needed.
Hopefully some people here will be able to enjoy them, but I fully realize that sequels never live up to the original.

This is very helpful, thanks. I agree with the awkward comp on that last one. The way I had it framed was accounting for a single vehicle at the bottom and all those taxis threw it off a bit. the rest look exactly the same as each other. all of your photos have a huge, glaring lack of subject. Nothing clearly draws the eye in any of them, which sucks because it's an interesting place to shoot and I can see you sorta start to 'get' it in some of the shots.
Another thing that really bugs me about these photos is that in such a huge sprawling dirty mess of a city you have managed to capture absolutely no life. It

It all seems so incredibly empty. I think these photos could have worked better with people and scenes
I'm not trying to be mean or purposely derisory to you, I just hate it when people beat around the bush about criticism of my work, so I'm trying to be direct with you
>>3080698
I get it. Personally I dislike people so I don't like to regularly include them as subjects in my photos. I view a city as a landscape with the people in it as minor elements that I try to minimize. I was also there during Chinese labor day and the city was a madhouse so I spent my time trying to get away from people as much as possible.
>>3080704
I get what you mean.
If emptiness is your thing then you really need to emphasise it in your photos. Like really fucking smack the viewer over the head with it, 'this is space that should be full of people but it's empty for some reason'. It creates a bit of a story, the viewer can fill in the gaps about why it's empty etc.
>>3080404
I think you do that well in this one. The building in construction really towers over the rest of the photograph. There's a good sense of scale, it dwarfs anything else in the photo. Even though there are people and cars in the photo, they're insignificant in relation to the huge tower. Looking at it you immediately get a sort of cyberpunk vibe. The composition isn't amazing but you got the feel and sense of scale there so that's good.
>>3080714

Hong Kong apartment buildings as a subject? Chungking Express and 2046 were actually what inspired me to want go to HK in the first place. I even remember riding that outdoor escalator the whole way last time I was there unsuccessfully trying to find the guy's apartment. I've never really tried to go for his aesthetic specifically, especially since his themes revolve more around intimacy with his characters and I'm traveling alone trying to avoid people, but I did shoot more people the first time I was there which probably lend themselves better to that style.

Awesome, thanks for posting those. Lots of great shots in there. I have shot more in this style before, even in Hong Kong itself, but I guess I just wasn't feeling it this time around. I didn't shoot any 35mm which I regret, and on top of that I guess I just wasn't in the right mindset.
My life has unfortunately shifted away from focusing on my hobbies to solely focusing on my work. My previous trips were 100% about going out to shoot and I was overflowing with inspiration to do so. This trip was more along the lines of, I'm about to go crazy and need to get away and relax, and hey this trip I took to HK and Japan once was awesome so let's just do that again. I was definitely still in a work mindset in HK, maybe even for most of Japan. My old fun-loving photographer self may have started to come out near the end of my trip and I shot a lot of 35mm there, so hopefully those will turn out a a bit better and show more of a connection with Tokyo and its inhabitants.

fuck off, Robin.

Great shots OP. Which parameters did you used for the city lights at night? (meaning mainly shutter time and lightness)

I like them. The post processing feels a bit too muted in the colors and tones, and I generally try to avoid placing large distracting elements in the foreground of my shots like you have in these three, but other than that they're nice to look at. Keep shooting and practicing, and I'd suggest getting a tripod so you don't have you rest your camera on ledges and jersey barriers for your long exposure shots. I'm jealous you're going to get to shoot there for a year.

Yeah, flickr. And I find it's best to ignore people like that. This board does seem to be quite a bit angstier than I remember though.

Well, as you can see most of my night film shots were underexposed, so unless you want me to tell you what I did so you know what not to do, it'll probably do more harm than good. I can tell you a bit about my process though and what has worked for me before, and why it probably didn't work for me this time.
I use color correction filters when doing long exposure night city photography. I have an 80A, 80B, and 82C. The problem I had was metering with them. Last time I was there I was way more engaged in photography and had been shooting multiple times per week for years. To give you an idea of how much I shoot nowadays, the roll that was in my camera when I left on this trip was half-shot from 2 years ago. So I was a bit rusty. Generally they cut out between 2/3 and 1 1/3 stop of light. This is dependent on a few factors though, most of which I neglected to take into account this time around. I used to eye all my metering and it'd work out fine for me but not doing that for a few years apparently affects your accuracy quite a bit.
Anyway, they were mostly shot at around f/5.6 - f/8 and 5-10 seconds. In retrospect it should have been closer to 30 seconds. Or 15-20 with no filters. Portra loves being overexposed so there's a lot of leeway on the upper end of the exposure range and I should have taken advantage of that like I used to.

Hah, that's awesome. Agree about the grain obviously. It's disappointing, but it's not like I was expecting a photobook's worth of pictures from a weekend trip. I have a few shots I'm really happy with that'll get added to the HK set and that's all I really wanted.
Those shots posted here >>3081238 though are really great and make me wish I had spent time before the trip 1) shooting around my city to shake the rust off and 2) consuming other films, pictures, and media to get inspired like I used to do before my trips. Looking back, this trip I was definitely focused more on of the act and process of shooting than the actual result. I've also traditionally tried to get a good mix of architectural and documentary-style elements in my photography, but I was too-heavily focused on the former this time around.

As someone who had been living in HK for 20+ years but currently out working in another country, you successfully reminded me what I loved about the place.
I suggest you to go take a deeper look into those 北魏 sign boards next time you come to HK. Not sure how anyone could incorporate them into their photos but it might be worth trying.

That's really cool man, glad I could do that. You might like my older shots of Hong Kong too, I did a lot more documentary-style photography on that trip.
