I like underexposed pics the most, but yours seem like washed out blacks. Give it some contrast and push your whites/highlights a bit to give it some bright. The image looks 'dead'

It looks one dimensional because it was shot on 135mm focal length. It may seem as if its more location than me but I was driving down to my friend's house and saw that there was a campground nearby and I still had time till the sun went down. This shot still had careful planning into consideration considering in order to get those colors you can't just be at the pretty location at any time of the day. I specifically chose 135mm out of all the other focal lengths in my bag as well because I wanted to specifically frame the shot that way as well.

The trees to the left were naturally darker in the scene. I also dodged and burned the trees a little bit to make those darker and the ones hit by the sun brighter.

i'm sorry, i didn't mean to insinuate that you didn't plan the shot out, its composed great. and by one dimensional, i didn't mean flat, just that it looks good on the surface, but since its still pretty average terrain it's not telling a story or pushing a feeling besides "looks nice." Which ties into location being a factor, since those exciting pics are usually in exciting locations

Well, I like urbex too, and if I was there I would completely ignore the foreground (adds nothing) and the building on the right (not especially interesting), but the one on the left with the pipes is really cool. In this case you'd want to just isolate that building with a longer focal length or crop in.
Having more in the frame doesn't lead to a better scene if that content doesn't add anything to it.

You're right that we shouldn't trust browser resampling, but what I like most in photography is the details - I love peering at every nook and cranny and seeing how they work in concert to form the image. It's not for everyone but I'd much rather present my images in a format where people who are inclined like myself can look as closely as they want. I can limit to pedestrian resolutions or present my pictures how I think they should be seen.

Maybe clean up the frame a bit more? For instance the area to her left is a bit distracting.

The angle of the frame is far off from the foreground and background, so it feels off-kilter.
The top of her head is a bit cut off.
Her hair is a bit messy, which I guess can be a negative or positive depending on what you're going for. But it distracts from her otherwise smooth profile.
Some of the background clutter distracts because it's halfway in the frame.
Good overall, but pay attention to the details of what's in the frame and the relationship of the frame to the scene. If you're going to shoot anonymous photos like this, maybe find a way to show more details of her personality that don't identify her - a hand, an ear, her nose, a jawline, etc.

You should experiment to see at what levels you camera actually clips highlights compared to the amount displayed. Also see if you can take advantage of picture styles to edge the jpeg rendering closer to what the RAW files is capable of, usually by selecting a neutral setting and lowering contrast.
Since the preview is always an 8-bit image, the amount of dynamic range shown is extremely limited and makes matters worse on cameras that near 15 stops. For example, on one camera there may be an even amount of "leg room" to either end of the histo, which makes sense for ETTR, because there is actually 1.5-2 stops of DR past the limit of the graph and you'll often be under-exposing if you believe that the right edge of the graph is the clipping point. On another model, the histogram may actually be more representative of where you'll clip highlights, and so you should still ETTR, but avoid hitting the right-hand side and not worry about shadows, since you can always bring them up in post.

Looks perfect now. Next step is to learn to image-stack, if you're keen on wanting to photograph small objects and actually have stuff be in focus. As long as you're on a tripod and want to have more in focus, don't bother going over f/8, just rack focus, take several shots and use some software capable of image stacking.

It's an interesting location. I think your biggest criticism on this board will be that there's not really a "story" or a point to this photo. Not all photos have to have one, but you should consider whether photography is a form of art and expression to you or simply a way to document attractive things. If nothing else, my challenge to you would simply be to attempt evoking moods with your photographs.
So, for this one, your sky is pretty blown out. That's a pretty common problem, but if you're shooting digital, expose more for the highlights and you can bring back some of the shadow in post. A better idea, though, would be to try and capture this place at the right time.
Consider for a moment how different light and weather conditions could make this photograph feel. Would golden hour sunlight make it feel romantic and charming? Would fog make it feel foreboding, make the viewer wonder what's waiting for them up around that bend? How would a dark sky and intense rain make this photo feel? What would it look like at night?
That's just an example of what to think about when shooting a picture like this. Find a mood — it will be worth it.

Probably the best feedback I've seen in one of these rpt's in a long time. Wish there was more like this.
I personally think the sunny day is a fine time to shoot it, as it has a whimsical summer feel, even wild feel with this big fern in front. But the exposure is fucked (sky). Can't tell if it's sharpness or contrast that is too low, and saturation is a bit low also. All that green could really stand out and make a striking photo.
Still, a great location to shoot. Would like to see it pop up again in a future thread with a better attempt.

Tried to take a picture of the Atlanta skyline, but it seems like I didn't get it into focus despite believing I've had from the "zoom focus" technique I learned from watching a YouTube video (digital zooming on the LCD screen and manually adjust your focus from there).

Great photo kind of ruined by the red bush there, uglying up an otherwise nice view. I understand that you might not have been able to get it out of the shot, though. Very visually interesting / beautiful subject matter that you've framed pretty well. One thing I'd work on if I were you is getting the exposure just right so that you don't get those blown out skies like you have in that shot.

Starting off on a more objective level I think the tip of the building should have been in the shot. It's such a small thing but it feels wrong to me to not have the completion of the whole building in frame. Speaking on a more subjective level, while it's a very nice photo to look at it's honestly kind of boring. The kind of photo where you look at it, think to yourself "That's nice." and then never think about it again. I'm guilty of taking shots like this myself because I understand the desire to capture a stunning view like the one you did, but the subject matter is just too uninteresting for me to call it good.

I noticed it stopped raining at 2am, so I thought I would take that chance to take more pictures.
I used a smaller aperture and this is probably the best I could do.
I was using a tripod and I wasn't completely sure how well oriented the camera was - I was on a hill.

Ok, I apologize for giving you the rude criticism. I'll give the less asshole version of my thoughts.
It's not about the technical aspects of the photo. It's more of the composition of it. I kind of get what you were trying to go for here, but this could have been executed much better.
The whole idea behind 'HIPSTER' style seems to just be shooting random stuff in the streets with zero composition or framing but using a camera that will get you some bokeh or depth of field showing. That's about as far as "hipster" photos go. It has zero artistic value and maximum technical value.
You could take these same mundane stairs in a more mysterious fashion, especially with that exit sign, if you look at it from a different angle. Maybe even black and white to really add to the atmosphere. I have included an example.
I can guess what you were maybe FEELING when you stood here. Lonely, deserted, eerie, and dark. But your photo doesn't really translate those feelings so well. Hopefully the example will show you kind of what I mean

Guy who actually posted the photo here - just want to clarify, I hate hipsters, so "hipsterish" to me is actually just trash. All of my friends are hipsters, however, so I took this photo to make fun of them and their "aesthetic". I actually did take some more effortful photos of the exit sign / stairs and in black and white like you suggested, but I think I might have deleted them. Thanks for the criticism anyways.

It's a really unfocused photo, in the metaphorical sense. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be looking at so my eyes kind of just wander around looking for something interesting. The factories / machinery in the background is probably the most interesting part of the photo but occupies too little space to have any meaningful effect, and as a landscape photo it's just empty.
