Close up stuff is neat but you can't ignore the rules of design because of a gimmick. There is essentially no subject in the image, and if there is, it's pretty uninteresting. I'd say watch a few youtube videos or articles about composing photographs. Then learn to process the images in lightroom, but don't over saturate. getting a grip on those things should help you out a bit.

And obviously, learn everything about the camera

If you are REALLY wanting just to do macro work, mirrorless is the key. EVF is the best aid for macro focusing (or just on the exact area you want due to in viewfinder zooming)

But that's not important for good photographs.

What you need to do when taking nature, especially close up is to pay attention to tones and depth. If you don't and take photographs of 1 thing it'll suck. But you also have to balance this with not making the composition too cluttered. Also keep it tidy; even if by nature what you are photographing is not neat at all.
