I'm an amateur but I usually ask. I'm still working on getting confidence to be honest, and I do greatly worry that I'll offend someone if I take a photo of them to their face.

I live in a big city half the week (LA) so I think people are used to photographers and a general lack of space.

Maybe dress nicer to be honest and tell people its for school.

Shave the fucking pedostache and wear normal clothes you fucking creep. Find a batch of excuses (school, art project, whatever) and don't sperg out and throw your spaghetti around when confronted.

As interesting as the subject might be, the background and context is important. Don't shoot people in your fucking residential suburbs where nothing ever happens (except your local creep aka you).

Also don't take pics of kids, it's rude and suspicious as hell.

That's why some street/documentary photographers who have good social skills are successful in the craft. They know the art of small talk to make the subjects at ease if necessary. And if confronted, they already have a line of excuses and how to divert the convo with another topic that dissipates the unwanted tension.

And that's why I shoot with my phone, it's less intrusive for a robotfag like me. I can't even fake a warm smile desu.

It all depends on where you are, who you are, and how you present.
But in some ...many.. places, people are just dumb cunts about photographers.

Easy way is to be young and beautiful, preferably female. That radically reduces the chances of being seriously harassed.
Having girls *with* you is similarly disarming against general public douchebaggery. +10 if they are also using a camera.

Also, don't use a huge-ass DSLR with a footlong lens for street, people usually associate them with paparazzi, douchebags and superzoom stalkers. Switch to a mirrorless, compact or ultracompact with a fast AF prime that's not an eyeshore or even better if you want to be mistaken for an art student: film disposables.

just point your lens away from the subject then ease your lens into them like as if they came into your picture instead of you framing up for them. If they look at you funny, smile or interact and give them your name card with your flickr or ig account so they know its not for some dodgy shit. wear something nice an unintimidating.. groom yourself too. If you wanna take pictures of kid.. dont.. thats the worst way to get in trouble. Chech out Garry Winogrand.. he smiled and interact when his subjects looked at him. If you are shooting digital.. dont check your shots.. just shoot and put down the camera.

lens is probably the most important. I shoot with a 5d and the 40mm pancake, get relatively little harassment, but the second I strap a telephoto on there I'm a pedophile

Well, one can take the other direction and just go bigger. A medium format SLR is huge and alien looking enough to make people just curious about it. A folder or a TLR gets respect from old folks and mirin' from hipster qts. Can't afford snapshits with MF though.

OP here thanks for all the advie. Prob bc it has kids in it and I was there for 3 min. I mean if I talk to the ppl it takes longer and increase conflict potential so better just to snap and shot. Motorcycles are already intimidating. The more faggy u look the less trouble u seem to get in so maybe ill wear a silly hat or something. *this is a shot that recently got me in trouble. 99% percent of the time I have no problems shooting but if im doing a four hour city wide shoot I would always run into one asshole that took offense to me shooting him and demands money. Ppl do not like their photos taken. They are suspicious. Better to take their photo then zip away on my bike. I could see if i was taking upskirts of a 14 year old but im just trying to caputure some damn beauty in the world. These normies dont understand. If they ask me i tell them im a photojournalist and i take overyones photos. Best way to defuse the situation?

Huge mistake that will label you as a creep. Be on the move, see something or someone cool, or a good subject? Shoot right away and keep on walking. Learning how to use hyperfocal and locking aperture at f/5.6 or f/8 so you can be done as fast as possible is a good idea. You absolutely don't want to look like a wild predator stalking their prey, remember you're taking candid and completely spontaneous pics and leave the 3 minutes fiddling with dials and knobs for landscapes and model work.

The photo has a compressed perspective that makes it clear you shot it with a long lens. You know what else looks like that? Paparazzi photos and creepshots.

Three of the subjects are facing away from the camera and there's no interaction between them. The only person whose face you can see looks creeped out by what you're doing.
