Second this. I particularly love the Fuji 1600 iso disposable.

Xa2. After shooting a ton of p&s from MJUs, to Klasses, to T4s, the xa2 has been my favorite. Unless you shoot mostly close ups, the xa2 kills it.

>I feel like there isn't any joy in using digital cameras now
I agree with this. However, I see the immense value in digital for commercial and sports photography.

My opinion is that it would be healthy for every other field of photography to work with film. At least to learn to approach photography more slowly. Take your time with each scene.

I know it's not exactly "film" but is the Fuji Instax line any good as a cool toy to use from time to time when you're with your normie friends?
>>
>>3077711
It is pretty cool, especially if you get the Wide version but the cost per shot is a bit restrictive. And it is film.
>>
>>3077674
The cheapest I've seen these ones online are 12€ a pop. Is it really worth to risk getting one with a grossly expired film? They're discontinued as fuck.
>>
>>3077669
link the new thread in the old thread dummy
>>
>>3077676

When ever i go out shooting with my ricoh gr or a7rii i get excited because i know i got a few good shots. I get back home and edit the photos.. but i kinda lost the connection between me and the pictures i took. Film makes me pre-vizuallize my shots makes me look into more details of the subject or the scene.

Printing and Developing is also another art form that takes a lot of patience and knowledge to just craft what that has been taken with your camera depending on the look and feel of the film you are after.

I mean with digital megapixels feels really artificial than film grains and having to shoot on a medium and large format with even more resolution, sharper images, more details and having the luxury to do movements is something you can never get on a digital camera even when your has 50 or 100 megapixels.

Im sticking to film all the way because that whats separates an artist to a photographer
>>
>>3077722
They are not discontinued.
I bought a pair a few weeks ago and their expiration date was end of 2018.
Also should be about 8 € a pop, 15 € for a double pack.
>>
>>3077732
I'll have to look harder then, thought they were discontinued due to the apparent unavailability. There are some cheaper ones from Kodak and Agfa at 10€ each, but the Fuji ones are particularly expensive...
>>
>>3077674
Totally this, I got them for 8$ Canadian. One of the only cameras with no shutter lag, flash, and actually pocketable. It's a bonus I like soup 400 too.
>>
I decided to get serious with film and start to devellope my own BW, just ordered lab equipment a couple of days ago.But yesterday my Nikon F3 died on me , i bought it used with warranty so i´ll get my money back. I still have ai 35mm f2. Right now i´m thinking about a replacement. Should I get another F3, or should i save some money and get something cheaper like a FE2. I´m also considering selling the lens and buying something completly different like a rangefinder or a MF. There so many options any advice is welcome.
>>
>>3077745

if you're serious about shooting in film i suggest something that can last you abit more. If you're not a poor fag invest on a minolta cle with a voightlander lens. Or else find a mint condition nikon FE2..

but frankly speaking, i would go for an MF camera if i were you and go get a p&s for 35mm so you can bring them everywhere on your daily routine without bringing extra equipment with rhe MF.
>>
im still contemplating if i should get a 4x5 with a 6x17 back so i can get some nice movements but slower process. Thinking of getting the Horseman 45fa with a dayi 6x17 back

or get a fujifilm gx617 which is faster to set up and not really a bitch to carry around but lacks of movements and limited amount of lens.

suggestions?
>>
found a Olympus EE-3 for 10us in some good will, is it worth?
>>
What do do you guys think of the pen f? I like the idea of having 72 shots per film and think it´s the most beatiful camera ever built.
How does it handle? Is it reliable?
>>
Said this in the old thread as it was dying. How far do you think I can push lomo 100?
>>
>>3077727
>Im sticking to film all the way because that whats separates an artist to a photographer

>>
Anon who couldn't find cheap Fuji Quicksnaps online here. I went on a quick brick&mortar trip around my city center and they where nowhere to be found either, all places just had the Kodak FunSaver and it's not like I went to big chains, but indie places too. I decided to get an Ilford b/w and a lomography color disposables to fool around a little bit.

The AE-1 is a better camera by almost any sane reasoning.
However the Pentax is all metal and all mechanical, meaning it will run just fine without batteries. The caveat is that it's probably 15 years older than the Canon, so is less likely to run properly.
The Canon has a much better viewfinder, much better, smaller and cheaper lenses, is much lighter, and has auto-exposure.

AE1 is cookie-cuter hipster generic safe plastic gears trash. Pentax Spotmatic is 100% mystic all metal KINO.

Tbh, not much. There's the NP mode, but the Natura S with its 1.9 lens makes for a much better lowlight argument. I don't see much reason to get the Classica aside from wanting a zoom. And even then not sure if I would choose it over a Contax TVS.

I went to the harbor today to shoot, I found it incredibly hard. I'm a new photographer, and trying to find something which could be seen as noteworthy or come out rewarding and fresh was difficult to find.

I have a people phobia so aside from when I'm working down in LA at the homeless shelter I have a hard time going up and taking close up pics of people as well.

Anyone have good examples of harbor photography? I'll get them developed and uploaded in 2-3 days.

I get what people mean by exploiting, technically you're exploiting almost anyone the moment you go taking pictures of them without permission.

I actually live in the homeless shelter too half the week, so the people i'm mainly around are homeless, not an opportunity i'm willing to pass up on.

I've just had my shutter speed on B for a while now. I'm reading a canon manual that says 1,30,60 are ideal for indoor settings, and 125,250 for outdoors depending on cloudy day or sunlight.

Does this sound about right?

Will having it on B mess up your photos? I figured it was an automatic of sorts.

Should i play around with the 2,1 next to B or the 1,2,4,8, if i'm shooting indoors?
>>
>>3078094
??? underexposure you can work with but a blurry mess you cannot. Keep your eye on that shutter speed. I don't know what lens you're using but for handheld never go below1/30. 1/45 really.
>>
>>3078102
Use your meter and learn about exposure.

B stands for 'bulb' which means the shutter stays open for however long your finger is pressing the shutter button. Its meant for long exposures. All your photos will be blurry as hell and super overexposed. If you shot a whole roll this way I'd just throw it in the garbage and learn your lesson. Developing it will be a waste of money.

Oh i'm the guy asking the question, guess it was the fact i had it set on B. I have a canon ae-1 50mm lens.

Learn how to read your camera meter. Study how exposure works. Trust your meter and you'll get well exposed shots. The learning curve is steep in the beginning, but it's also very short. Hope your next roll goes better!

My old man gave me his N2020. He bought it when I was born and used it until digital cameras became a thing.

I had only used manual cameras before, so this thing is kinda nice. Autofocus, DX codes, auto-winding, etc.

But got damn is it loud.

I know nothing about Nikon lenses though, do you guys have any recommendations?

I assume this thing is too old to use modern F-mount lenses too.

I'm also using my dad's old N2020. You're right that it's to old to autofocus with newer lenses, and unless they have an aperture ring you're out of luck there, too. I've been using my Rokinon 14mm on it, which is MF anyway, and it's been pretty fun.

Got one of these guys (Nikon Lite Touch 130 ED Zoom) at a thrift store for $9. Needed a new battery but works perfectly well.

Shot my first ever roll with it and i gotta say, i'm liking it. Not only is carrying this thing around so much more mellow than my DSLR (i can actually bring it when I go skating too), it makes me really take time and make sure i'm getting a good shot before i squeeze the trigger. It makes me hold back so much, I can barely shoot all 24 in one day, whereas with my DSLR, i'll shoot off a couple hundred in a few hours.

So is anything wrong with grabbing people off the street for a photo?

Is street photography about capturing moments and people from a distance or occasionally going up and shooting a full on portrait? I imagine either work it's just about how you do it. I was told to work on my confidence with taking pics of people so I figure asking Is the best way.

Also, can someone give me a recommendation on a lens? I have a 50mm for my canon ae1 but I wouldn't mind something with better range.

He gave me a few of his sutofocus lenses at least.

A 24mm and a 70-210mm f4. Both are clean and he even has the box and manuals with them.

He said he will send a 50mm and super zoom (something like 18-200) soon.

I have no idea how he took pictures of his kids with this slow autofocus. I think I am faster now with my manual camera.

Halfway through my first test roll on it, will go get developed today or tomorrow. Hopefully there are no issues. I am not sure the AF is actually working.

Is the 70-210 a sigma? I think I have the some one for mine. I tried it on my D750 for shits and giggles, and it's actually pretty nice for portraits. The autofocus is dreadful though, and worse on the N2020.

On a semi related note, I just bid on this, because I want a film camera that's smaller, simpler and quieter than the nikon.

Yea, I have an X-500 I use. Love the damn little thing.

And no, the lens is a Nikon. I have yet to try it outdoors in good light, but indoors it is practically unusable.

I went shooting with the 24mm for the first time today actually. It worked pretty good outdoors, but every now and then it would freak out, focus to minimum focus distance and lock up. I'd have to switch to manual focus and bring it back to infinity before it would work again.

I shot it in full auto mode cause thats what my dad always said he did and I was curious to how it would turn out. Headed out to drop the roll off now.

>>3078620

Nope, Natura too from what I read. It is already sold out the three camera shopd I checked here in Japan.

found this dirt about 50 usd, barely functional lcd, broken battery door , beat up exterior, clean lens and here's the catch :

- rarely after turned on, if i want to press the flash button, it's suddenly turn off and on again ( kinda like quick reset ). is it normal?
- after finished my 4th roll, 2 of them are only getting 31 exp, not 36 exp as the other 2, the film advance just stuck , and begin rewinding back to canister.

^ is that 2 problem considered normal or this little one started dying? :(

I have a few m-mount lenses (adapted to my mirrorless) and I want an m-mount body.

Recomendations?
>>
>>3078689
How much do you want to spend?
Are you willing to deal with potential repairs on an old body?
>>
>>3078698

I really don't know. I see Leica M-mount bodies going for the price of a new car on e-bay and I can't even come close to that.

I dont want to spend $10,000, but a couple hundred (~$800?) would be okay.

I wouldn't mind trying to get one repaired (in Japan so lots of repair shops) just would hate to spend a couple hundred on a body only to find repairs are $3,000.
>>
>>3078704
Go for an M4-2 or M4-P, from the late 70s/80s, for the most recent, most affordable Leica body. Should be $600-800. M6 has a meter, but runs ~$1k. You can get a modern Zeiss Ikon ZM rangefinder also for $1k. It's M6-like but twenty years younger, and only recently discontinued.

The Bessa series are by Cosina like the Zeiss Ikon, but not up to the same build quality. Very functional, though. They run $400-700 usually.

Repairs on film Leica bodies are usually far under $500 at a time, and repairs costing that much aren't that common if you buy a body in good condition with a known history. When buying an older film body (1980s or earlier), you'll want to have a tech look it over and refresh the lubrication if that hasn't been done by the previous owner, so factor in ~$200 for that.
>>
>>3078707

Thanks for the info.

I would definitely prefer something with a meter, so I might try to talk myself into the M6. Read the manual and it looks really nice. Start at around $1,200 on e-bay, but I will go check some local shops this weekend.
>>
>>3078704
Voigtländer rangefinders could be a line worth looking into for you

I want to get into medium format and someone is selling me this camera for $180 with the lens.

I have little knowledge about this and is this a good camera? It's a zenza bronica ETRS

6x4.5 is the smallest medium format negative, but yes, that should be a fine camera.
>>
>>3078933
What do you mean by that? Won't a 120 film work on this camera?
>>
>>3078934
Yes, 120 will work fine, but the ETRS makes negatives that are 6cm by 4.5cm, as opposed to 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, etc, so you won't see quite as large a jump over 35mm. Still worth it, though.

Hey gang, I need some help curing my boredom. I've got an EOS 300V. Now I would never use the crappy flash unironically but since it's been raining for aeons here I've been trying it out inside the house.

Does anyone know if it will actually work properly with a manual lens + converter? It doesn't test fire at half-button press with it but it does when fully pressed.

Also how do I meter for this shit? I understand that in complete darkness the meter just reads "nope, not happening" but do I just set the shutter speed at 1/90 and below, randomly pick a relatively wide f-stop and pray it works?
>>
>>3079010
Look up steel reels, that's all it is. You feed the film into the middle coloum and wind it on. YouTube it senpai
>>
>>3078480
>Only this one photographer can take pictures of things other than people. Everyone else has to take shitty street photos.

What are you even doing here?
>>
>>3079079
done it already.the ones in youtube have a clip in the middle and thats where they start to wind the film from inside out.mine have nothing.
>>
>>3079070
Lens should work as long as you know how to meter a manual lens. As for the actual metering aspect of shooting, complete darkness will pick nothing up unless you have your shutter opened for an insane amount of time (and even then there's no garuentee).

Now if you're shooting during overcast weather than I'd set it to f/8 so you can have everything in focus with a relatively fast ASA film/shutter. If all else fails use a phone light meter.
>>

You can grab a konica rf pretty cheap.

Did you actually read my post? Like, did you pay attention for even two seconds?

So I found this Ansco Zoom (pic stolen but exactly the same) with autoflash, and motor rewind and I havent been able to find a manual on it or anything, also, I'm just starting to get a grasp of shooting in film, and so far it has been impossible to find developing chemicals where I live

a) you guys know where I can find a manual for it? the autoflash doesnt work for some reason

b) how do you guys develop your film rolls?
>>
>>3079281
What country do you live in?
>>
>>3079282
Mexico, and it isnt that we're backwater or anything, it's that people no longer use film, and there are no dedicated photography stores anymore, it was impossible to find Kodak film roll, and there were only 2

I can buy them online tho, at B&H and pay for shipping and everything, and I even found a book "The Darkroom Cookbook" and it has some recipes on some chemicals but still, I think the only way is going to be through B&H, but I dont like the idea of paying for intl shipping everytime I run out of chemicals

so, how do you develop your film?

or do you have a link on a manual for the camera...?

So I have been developing my film at Yodobashi, but hear good things about BIC.

Has anyone used BIC before? Looks like it is ~1000円 for developing and 24 MP scans Takes five days though.

I don't know if I wanna wait that long. I can just get same day developing and scan myself, but I can never seem to get the colors straight.

Yeah chemicals are tricky, most online stores have restrictions on shipping chemicals internationally.

B&H is probably your best bet, or if you're close to the border with the US drive over for the day and buy a whole load of shit and bring it back with you.

You could definitely try Caffenol, which is a film developer made from instant coffee, vitamin C and a few other easily found ingredients. You don't really need a stop bath, just use 1 minute of running water. You can also easily make a fixer, which you'll need. The Darkroom Cookbook will definitely tell you how to make fixer. And then you can just use a minute amount of detergent instead of photo flo, but it's really not essential.

So put a bit of research into Caffenol, probably your best bet. There's a whole community around it so finding development times and shit is easy.

Personally I develop with Ilfosol 3, but that's a short-lifed concentrate developer so unlikely to suit your needs
>>
>>3079289
yeah, I do live in a state that's in the border but firstly, I havent renovated my visa, and I dont live *in* the border, I live in the centre of the state and it's roughly 250km/155mi to the border and I don't have time to go there anytime soon

yeah I had read up on Caffenol, but discarded it bc I thought of it as a last resort alternative but I guess I'll have to make-do with it

got some contact info where I can hit you up and ask for advice on my "knowledge travel" on film?

I mean, if it isnt much of a bother of course man, np
>>
>>3079294
The quality of Caffenol will surprise you, it's pretty much just as good as many other developers you can buy.

My email address is spamtastic321 @ gmail . com (without spaces) so just shoot over any questions. If you email me make sure you put the subject line in all caps or make it attention grabbing or something because I get a shitload of emails

>>3079325
What I did was use the stubs for the 35mm roll and just used a 120 spool to feed the film onto as normal, some people like to use an empty 35mm canister to feed the film into but that seems more difficult. Once you've shot the roll it obviously won't advance any further so you have to cut the film in darkness if you don't want to ruin the last exposure. And yeah change the backing plate to 220 and also the frame counter to 220
>>
>>3079325
>>3079331
Also to load it just feed the film onto the empty spool just enough for it to grab, then you have to do the dry fire trick where you open the back, twist and hold the frame counter with your finger to 2 for eg, then close the back. Then you need to advance twice and you're good to go. I advanced once on this test roll and I only got half and image

desu unless you have lenses for a specific mount you might as well choose based on looks or price.

If you want longer distance shots and also close closeups look at a 28-70 macro lens or something similar. Pretty versatile and usually fairly cheap since they're a lot less desirable than prime lenses

Basically wondering if you calculate exposures differently for medium format compared to 35mm? Read somewhere that because MF can take in more light(?) you can expose things for a slightly shorter duration.

Pretty great detail for a 110 scan

Try this action for photoshop, and then tweak in lightoom. Usually does a pretty good job of getting a very flat starting point for editing

It is 135 though T.T

I will give that a shot, don't have photoshop right now though.

oh my b I thought you had a 110 film holder on the lightbox, the frames look too small for 135

still a good amount of detail, would be far more noticeable/impressive in a properly exposed negative

Yea, I figured.Iwill scan some properly exposed stuff tomorrow.

There does seem to be a somewhat more of an appreciation, though shops selling film are becoming rare, with even dedicated photography shops carrying like 5 different kinds at best. Same cloth shutter prone to ungluing/pinholes, very imprecise "rough estimate" viewfinder w/o framelines or parallax indication, 1s-1/1000s gud shutter speed range on some models (staple 4K), easily adjustible, fairly precise rangefinder with tolerable patch, ~8s timer, 1/30 flash sync, giant array of poor-wide-open russian m39 or expensive western/nippon LTM lenses, necessity to use accessory finders with any focals other'n 50mm, durable, reliable until it breaks, solid, heavy. What else do you want to know?

They can work okay if you get a good one. Quality control was nonexistent, so it's the luck of the draw. They tend to be unrefined and ugly in finish, with unfriendly viewfinders.

I had a Fed-2 for a while, and it mostly worked fine. It's one of the nicer FSU rangefinders aesthetically and as a user experience.

I own a Zorki 4k, apart from the fact I had to get it serviced for light leaks it operates fine, even well. The only problem is the viewfinder is a bit dim/cloudy. But considering you can buy one for literally 1-2% of a Leica it's great value.

I've been looking at a few other m42 screw mount bodies since I have a few lenses for my parents' old Vivitar 220, but I'm really tired of this vivitar body because of how poorly my parents took care of it.

I read elsewhere that the Spotmatic F is what most people recommend, but a few folks here earlier had mentioned the Praktica.
Just looking for a bit more feedback from some of you.

Or should I just look into a completely different type of body and just grab an adapter??
>>
>>3079873
Ill add some of the project to an imgur link give it to you after work today.
>>
>>3080184
Solely depends on your budget.Spotmatic's got a cloth curtain shutter, failure-prone due to pinholes/tearing as they all are, the MTL/LTL Praktica lines have metal blade shutters that are practically immortal by comparison and don't age unused unlike the cloth ones. Choose your film body based on ergonomics and your own needs, I'd suggest sticking to stuff with a 1/1000-1s shutter speed range at least and a split prism focusing aid in the viewfinder that has TTL metering that doesnt rely on defunct mercury 1.35v batteries to operate. Or just get an adapter.

I keep coming up with ideas to shoot photography in places which I end up chasing leads and all end up as a no go or too much work. Tried getting on commercial vessels to shoot that, factories/manufacturing plants, also too hard.

I want to try and shoot ballerinas, would anyone have any tips on going about this? Of course I can't go to the MET, and the fact of the matter is outside of rehearsals and practice you aren't allowed unless press in a live showing. Also you have to count anyone under 15 out of the equation as the younger kids don't have as much power as the adults.

>implying I'm not a rich hipster

What do you want to know specifically? The camera is awesome. The AF is fast, the body itself ergonomic, adjusting settings becomes second-nature after a roll. Exposure comp is easy to adjust on the fly. The camera meters slide film well. I don't mind the vertical orientation at all, holding it to shoot landscape is just as natural feeling. The ability to have EXIF printed in the frame margins is RAD and will come in handy once I'm travelling and won't be developing any film for 5+ months.

My main gripes are:
>Loud as fuck focusing.
Seriously sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
>F4 lens is kind of a bummer.
I'm stocking up on 400ISO film for this reason. I've found I can shoot with it down to 1/15th but still, haven't a slightly faster lens would be much appreciated.

All-in-all, it's a great camera. Electronics can have some gremlins, so make sure you get a properly working one. The first one I bought was fucked and had to be returned.
>>

It all depends on the resolution of your scanner.

Most household scanners will be pretty low. Specialized scanners and modern DSLRs can make an image easily printable at large sizes.
