Last FGT I'm making. This thread doesn't really serve a purpose anymore, and I think it should die for awhile. If someone else wants to take over go for it.

>This thread doesn't really serve a purpose anymore, and I think it should die for awhile
How so?
>>3066519
A size would help
>>3066536
super system 4 is the one I use, can dev two rolls of 35mm at once or one roll of 120
Where do you guys get your color film developed? I've been developing my own B&W for a few months and figured I'd shoot a couple rolls of color I found in my closet. The Darkroom is pretty expensive and while Walmart is cheaper, they keep my negatives. Is there a cheaper service that gives you your property back?
>>3066529
Well, there's at least 7 other film relates threads going right now. So this doesn't do much to contain it all in one thread already. And alot of them are more interesting and have better discussions than the last few fgts.
>>3066536
Get a 650ml, which will let you dev 1 or 2 rolls of 35mm or 1 roll of 120.
>>3066542
This is such a stupid question to ask without posting where you live.
>Hey guys, what's good restaurant you'd recommend? The local steakhouse is too expensive. Olive Garden is cheaper, but it always gives me diarrhea.
>>3066542
>Walmart is cheaper, they keep my negatives
I never understood this when I see people mention it here, why the fuck would they do this? It's not like they have to go out of their way to hand back the fucking negatives
>>3066546
Prob because most Walmarts send out now. Saves them $$ not having to send the negs back.
Unless it's a place that offers 1-hour turnaround. Then yeah, makes no sense and I'd ask for my negatives returned...even if it means getting them back in a long curl in the canister holder. Gotta remember this is 4chin though and lots of posters are autists that would never think to simply ask for negatives back.
>Hurrah muh filmz is ready

>B-but where's the plastic containing the physicality of the sun's cosmic rays that were present the moment I pressed the shutter and thus forever capturing the banality of life depicted by shopping carts in empty parking lots
>oh, we don't return negatives
>O-o-oh, thanks...you too.
>>3066545
Fair point, I live in Corvallis, OR. I was wondering more about online stuff, but I didn't specify so I understand the criticism. I used to use Snapfish when I was in high school but they got bought out by Amazon and don't develop film anymore. Are there any services like that anymore?
Copped a Mamiya c220 and a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 518/16 plus 4 rolls of portra 400 for 80 bucks. Did I done good?
>>3066552
Support local bro. I googled your town and a number of hits came up. Does the Rite-Aid process still? This guy looks promising too:
http://www.wisephotoprinting.com/services.html
>>3066558
did the mamiya come with a lens? they are good cameras. Does the ikon work at all shutter speeds?
>>3066558
price is alright, but i had the nettar and it.. just takes pictures. and ive used my c220 like twice in 3 years. they arent particularly hot cameras (for me).
>>3066559
Thanks a lot man, for some reason I never thought there would be a local place that could do it. I'll check them out sometime this week, after midterms.
>>3066563
Yep, c220 has an 80mm f2.8 on it, and the Zeiss works at all speeds (I haven't tested the exact speeds but the 200th is noticeably quicker than the 100th which is noticeably quicker than the 50th etc

Hi /p/
Im looking to get into LF photography
Im using an rb67 but I want to get into movements
I have done research over the last few months and im pretty sure i want to make the move and im selling off stuff to fund it, but im pretty fucking budget, so whats the cheapest cameras i should be looking at to get into it.
When ever I look around some cameras I find are way more than what people are saying and its really hard to find cause search fuction on ebay is shit and largeformatphotography.info is down.
Also anyone want an RB67 + 120 back + 180mm C + 50mm
selling for about 280 USD, ship worldwide, comes with 4x HP5, 2x Pan F and a roll of Provia, all new this year and ofc in 120
Thanks

keep your RB67.
Use it on your leisurely walk and shoot because its something you can keep in a sling bag and take it out when there is something you wanna quickly capture. You wont get that kind of luxury in taking out your camera and shooting on the go with LF.
Toyo, Horseman, Wista and Graflex Crown are available on Ebay for cheap plus 4x5 backs.. just add in a nikkor copal lens which is i think the cheapest LF lens around and i think and it can be less than a thousand. but take note that these are LF field cameras that does not have a rear rise and fall only swing and tilt.

I get you're budget and are looking to help fund the move to LF, but seriously, keep that RB. There will be times you'll kick yourself for parting with it, especially for what you can save up in a few short weeks. If you really need money go hit up some day labor place or find some research project that needs participants.

I'm a beginner and I'm thinking about developing my own film once that time comes, but I don't have a way to scan and print afterwards.
Would it even be worth developing on my own as far as cost if I have to send the film to get scanned and what not?
>>3066982
no, but you could print.
>>3066609
atta boy, that's the spirit
>>3066984
I don't have a scanner/dslr, so I should just deal with sending my film in to get developed, scanned, etc?
>>3067019
When you have to send them in to get scans/prints anyway, there's no need to develop them on your own, unless you enjoy doing so. Some scanners are quite cheap, but deliver acceptable quality, if this is an option to you.
>>3066641
I might consider keeping it but I have a lot of cameras, I feel like I only use my rb when ever I would rather use LF, and I carry around 35mm otherwise.
Also I'm looking to get a Fuji gw690 in the future to replace my rb
>>3066652
I know about the bellows extension of a lot of these cameras so I'm a bit clued up on how limited they are
Have any of you ever sent anything suggestive to get developed? Nudes, erotic, transgressive, etc.
Is it ok to send those in or do some labs have policies against this sort of thing?
>>3067121
>Nudes, erotic, transgressive, etc.
yes. nothing happened, labs dont give a fuck about your crappy homemade porn.
>>3067121
They wont know what it is until they develop it.
What are they gonna say? No you can't have your lewd negatives back? Unlikely.
As long as it isn't something illegal you should be fine.
Getting stuff scanned/printed is a different story I'd suspect.
Still, I wouldn't do it because the only person I get to see naked is my wife, and I am not sharing that with random developer.
Fuckhuge garage sale of vintage cameras. Ends tomorrow. Anything worth getting /fgt/?

I'm thinking on the Yashica Electro 35 because I know that's one good camera for cheap. I'm not very knowledgeable on old cameras.
>>3067121
If it's just nudity then you can have it developed np problem, they're used to it.
If it's illegal, or frowned upon (think subversive political protest in a country with a strong handed government) develop it yourself or shoot digital
>>3067236
That's a stash and a half, but a lot of it looks like mouldy trash, and everything that isn't seems to be priced pretty normally. If you see something you really want I'd suggest making an offer.
Also, you can post fb links to 4chan by shortening the url to fb.com
>>3067091

It doesn't, unless you use your rb exclusively for landscape work without filters, or for walkaround snapshits.
No close focus, no ttl viewing, no 50mm, no more than 100mm.

Ilford MGIV RC, I got hundreds of those for free. Some old dude was getting rid of his old darkroom stuff so he pretty much gave me everything for free, except for the enlarger.
>>3067255
yea i see what you mean.
I got my RB and i use it as a landscape camera and for snapshits.
For snapshits I prefer a smaller rangefinder and i find a yashica with a 45mm works great except for the film format, thus i want the fuji with the 90
and whenever i use the RB for landscapes I find myself wanting movements, also I find my 50 way to wide but it came with the camera, I actually almost never use it.
you guys are not wrong, I like my RB, but i feel like a camera with movements for landscapes and a fuji MF rangefinder could definitely be a more practical system for me.
Also I should have mentioned I am considering roll film cameras with movements like the horseman VH or 960, because the quality I get from MF film is plenty for me, just I find not having movements a bit sad on a camera that weighs a lot

Going to California in July. What film would you recommend?
>>3067430
I think you need to work on your phone/tablet backlighting method, pixel-kun/sama.Hint: depth of field. Caffenol is ultimately more expensiv per rolle than normal devs with extra bother.
>>3067466
Its actually a film scanner, Canon Pixma MP980.
But you're right, caffenol ends up being expensive, and processing color film in shitty bw chem gives me negs that are basically opaque. Sometimes I like the look, but its always pixelly from the 400% contrast adjustment to make anything visible. Pic of negs attached.
I fell for the half frame meme and finally got myself a half frame camera for the summer.
Olympus Pen-D from ebay listed as "for repair" by a japanese seller. I paid ~25€ including postage and the thing came in 7 days. There's some crap in the lens and the plastic under the winding wheel has broken off but otherwise the camera is in full working condition.
Here's a snapshit from my test roll.

>>3067297
Polymax T and Ilford Stop & Fixer. I prefer liquid chemicals since they are easier to mix
>>3067458
Anything that's slower than 200 is good. There is almost too much sunshine in California it blinds you, especially in SoCal and the Bay Area. I would recommend Velvia 50 and Ilford F Plus 50.

>>3067409

>>3067857

>>3067687
developed with no darkroom equipment at all. First roll I ever developed, before I even bought a tank. Marks are from agitation since it was just a spool of film in a big glass bowl being agitated with disposable chopsticks. chemistry was all homemade too, as written.
So I have a mamiya 1000 dtl, and an olympus OM-10. Maybe one of you could help me and tell me which one is the better camera and would be worth experimenting with film photography for the first time? From reviews it seems the mamiya is nicer, but I'd love some input from someone more experienced than me.

Recently had 6 rolls of film ruined by going though security x-ray machines with it. Two 400 rolls and the rest were 200.
I thought film under 800 wasn't effected.
How do you take a picture of the moon and actually get the details of the moons surface and not have it just a blurry ball of light?
I'm sure zoom amount is part of it but what about aperture and shutter speed?
>>3068445
1/250th, f11, iso 400 is a decent starting point.
>>3068445
As I'm sure you're aware, the moon moves. So to get the best pictures of the moon you'll need something to correct for that movement of the moon, like an astro rig that slowly moves. So with a shutter speed of say, 30 seconds, the moon will have moved ever so slightly in the night sky, creating a blurry image
Also it's impossible to advise on aperture and shutter speed over the internet since we don't know the amount of light in your particular scene.
>>3068421
I woke up one day and was chilling on the couch with the old man watching MacGyver during an episode when he develops film with orange juice. I shot DSLR at the time and said to my dad "Sure that works!" Googled it, and learned about Caffenol. Went out, bought disposable and washing soda at wally world, already had everything else. Developed it that night.
Thank god for macgyver, that was years ago and I shoot majority film now, as well as owning real steel reels and chem. I occasionally still do caffenol for fun. The only time I use DSLR now is for family events, like when my gf graduated college, didn't want to fuck with manual focus manual aperture T50 to shoot her getting diploma.
Heres one from when I figured it out a little bit more, but still pretty typical of Color film in caffenol.
Super upset that there isn't a film P&S thread active. My photos are shite, but at least they feel at home amongst other shit in P&S threads.

>>3068448
Man, don't comment if you're just talking out of your ass. The light on the moon is very constant. It's reflecting the god damn sun (a very constant, predicable light source). You'll need get need to worry about its movement since your shutter speed will always be quite quick (unless we start talking about 1000mm+ focal lengths or telescopes or something). A full moon needs ~f11 and 1/125th @200 iso give or take a stop.

>>3068637

Are there any film photography discords? if not someone should make one
>>3068693
You can do it with photo paper. Exposure time ~ 6 months, no developing required since it will form a residual image on the paper. Then just scan and invert
>>3068406
Honestly, the camera itself usually doesn't matter when it comes to film photography. The film and the glass are what produce the image for the most part. The only thing cameras will give you are different metering capabilities and shutter speeds. I'd say choose whichever one will give you access to the best/most lenses or whichever one you like most.

Thanks, I'll read more into it.
>>3067430
So what's your full process? I've been thinking about trying Caffenol.
>>3068843
They make proper tools for it, I found a Konica brand one that looks like it's from the 80s on ebay super cheap (no idea when it's actually from, that's just the vibe of the packaging). If you're shooting regularly with a camera that auto-rewinds it's well worth it. I think they're called film pickers or something like that.
>>3068901
Yeah I saw those but wanted to do it ASAP. I actually managed to do it by just sticking another price of film in, idly fiddled the roll back and fourth, decided to just yank it out and out the leader came with. Happy Days.
>>3068406
Mamiya will be harder to use but will force you to learn (or drive you away from film photography for good) om-10 is partially automatic that means it will take most of the hassle away in expense of more advanced control over the exposure. Personally I'd go with olympus cause setting the aperture and shutter speed every time you want to take a pic is painful and once you figure out the basics there is nothing stopping you from getting a fully manual camera.
>>3068843
Get a piece of film about 10cm long. Put a 3cm piece of double sided tape on one end of the film lengthwise, in the middle of the width. Then insert the end with the tape into the roll of film, and keep pushing it in until you feel the reel start to move. Then wind the piece of film a little more in, and then just pull gently to retieve the leader.
Works ever time, I use this when developing film since I reuse the canisters and so I can't break them open
>>3068843
I just take it to my local lab and ask for them to retrieve the leader. Takes them all of 5 seconds.
i wanna shoot dramatic and nostalgic looking pictures with the gf. what can i get? i dont mind if its super shitty as long as it looks hipster or whatever
>>3069102
post examples of what you want
>>3069102
Don't shoot film for that. Use whatever digital device you have (even a smartphone will work) + VSCO.
>>3069106
something like this. sorry its small. i was thinking about those 8mm videos that i see rom the 90s and how you can see much detail and i kind of liked that. i cant find any good examples. something that looks like old home videos. sorry im really clueless ive never shot on film
>>3069124
sorry forgot pic
>>3069126
Are you stuck on using film? Would be way easier to just use one of the 8mm apps on your smartphone.
If you really want to use film to make shitty images like that then maybe a 110 film camera will do it.
Maybe just buy and a cheap point and shoot and a cheap roll of film and take some photos and see how you like it
>>3069131
i guess i could just use filters and stuff. last general i posted this. i inherited an old 16mm and i really want to use it because the pictures that come out of it are just what i like. but i dont have any experience with film and i havent found a place to buy loaded cassettes for it. so i guess that is what is making me want to shoot film. i also just found the holga 120n and it seems promising and easy

I just got my first roll of FP4 shot through my new Zorki back from dev and in most frames I have at least two of the three major artefacts in this image. gf got a mju ii, shot a roll and every shot has light leaks.. any guides on replacing mju light leaks yourself?
also she loaded another roll, got 4 shots in before getting her previous roll back to find the light leaks, is the current roll fucked or can I unload it in the dark, keep it somewhere dark, fix the camera and put it back in?
>>3069192
Fuck that's so nice gonna buy a shit load next time I need film
>>3069353
If she already has a roll in the camera I'd recommend putting black tape where the light could get in. The shots she has already taken are likely to already have light leaks so this method will help the rest of the film still in the canister.
>>3069353
done this a few times before.. just get in a dark room, use something long and tiny, but not sharp, to push the rewind button, quickly open the camera and take out the roll. youll have to be fairly quick, lest the film leader dissapears into the canister.
>>3069356
this works too
as for the light leaks, just watch a utub video or something. its a fairly standard process.

The Mju II has a light seal around the lens that degrades over time, which produces weird elliptical light leaks around the edges of most pics. To solve it you just need to tape up the inside of the camera around the lens as much as you can, but sadly that is no guarantee of fixing it. The camera's nto really meant to be repaired, so what you can do to correct light leaks is limited.

I do. It's not as difficult as you may thought. Since you already have access to an enlarger, all you need is some trays, tongs, paper developer, stop bath and fixer. The entire printing process can be done in about 6 minutes.
However, if you want to make color prints then you may need a dedicated machine to do so.

Straya?
Hey /p/. I'm having trouble loading 120 film onto paterson reels.
It keeps getting stuck at the ball-bearings and I have to play with it a bit and wind it forward tiny bits at a time or it'll get stuck completely. Once this has left scratches on the neg.
I bought new reels, same thing.
I cleaned them in hot water and with a new toothbrush, same thing.
The only thing I can think of is maybe when I'm loading them on inside the dark bag and my hands are sweaty that might be what's causing it.
I'm probably going to try blocking out all the light in my bathroom to try loading out in the open tomorrow.
But if you have any ideas it'd be very helpful, thanks.
I hate to ask about gear in a film thread, but I am kind of at a loss.
I have a bunch of old a-mount minolta lenses, but no working body. I normally shoot Nikon, so I am not sure what to do with them.
After a little bit of googling, it seems the best film a-mount body is the a/maxxum/dynax 7. Seems like They run from $100-200 for the body (usually with a motodrive or lens bundled too).
My question is, is the a7 limited version worth an extra $100? Seems to have a larger internal memory (the body is capable of saving exif data for film), and a better exterior finish. They also seem to be in slightly better condition online.

Loading them in a darkroom is so much better, so if you can lightproof your bathroom that will help a lot. Gives you a lot more space to work with.
Also I'd suggest heating up your reels with a hairdryer or something. Makes them expand a tiny little bit so the film goes in easier, plus will get rid of any latent humidity or water on them.
Also maybe try loading the reels with the film facing the opposite way. So if you usually load them with emulsion side in, do emulsion side out instead. The film naturally curls a little due to being tightly rolled up for most of it's life, so if you put it on the reel the opposite way to the curl it can help
>>3072091
Thanks anon, I'll try all those things
>>3072085
At the beginning, are you pushing the film through or pulling it through? Pull the front edge past the ball bearings and then to the typical push motion for the rest of the roll.
>>3072102
Yeah I'm pulling it in like how you said

C200 isn't really doing it for me anymore, think I'll start using Ektar from now on
It's a film thread, post film photos.
Recent shot. Jupiter 8 lens, yellow filter, overcooked to fuck in Darktable.

Zorki? Fed?
Found some rolls of film in a drawer.
Probably 10+ years old.
How should I dev them?
>>3072331
dont. they are hazardous for your penile tissue.
send them to me ;)
>>3072331
Same as usual but instead of fixer use plain water and a little bit of hummous
>>3068273
>>3068422
Recently shot some, used a 715nm filter. There were some weird white spots on the negatives though. Will post example

Anyone know what these spots could be? This was with a deep red #29 filter, deved in HC-110. The previous image was deved in rodinal. A lot less visible with rodinal, but still there.

Wow, if that's 35mm it's quite grainless and sharp at the same time. Nice shot and nice scan m8.
>>3072397
Looks like digital, which film ?
>>3072397
That's dope
>>3072420
It's 6x9, but still, I think it very good for a 400 speed film in rodinal.
>>3072431
Rollei Infrared 400, 120
>>3072399
That's just uneven coating of the emulsion. I've seen it in a few other Rollei 120 films.
Kinda shitty, but hey, that's what you get for buying the cheapest film.
>>3072085
Trying to load 120 onto paterson reels is the best argument out there for switching to steel reels.
However, if patersons are the only option, help yourself out by rounding off the sharp leading corners of the film, and when it gets stuck, give the reel a few sharp raps on the side.
>>3072091
Holy fuck do not try loading them emulsion side out, or using a heat gun on your precision cast thermoplastics. Ignore this clown entirely.
>>3072091
are you mentally ill?
>>3072467
Only IR film currently being made as far as I know. There is Efke 820, but it's way grainier, and it's not in 4x5.
>>3072091
M8 don't listen to anyone else there is only one way to do 120 on Patterson style reels and guess what you don't use the stupid twisting motion at all. (If you like you can first remove the ball bearings and heat up a knife and melt together the inside spool to the other so it no longer spins.) all you do is get the film lined up and onto the reel just like you normally would but instead of now twisting it on further all you do is just grip the film lightly like you were grabbing a can of coke and twist the film (use gloves or make sure your hands are clean of cheeto dust senpai) the film goes on insanely easy.
Bonus tip: if you hold the end edge of film in your lips to get rid of the curl from the film it goes on in 5 seconds I shit you not.

so whats it like being poor?
>>3072593
film costs less than digi, better in value even in long term.
>>3072597
I could have bought an A7R with the past year's worth of film shooting expenses.
>>3072606
Dude, the dark bag is probably getting damp with the sweat of your frustration. Load ilm in a windowless bathroom or closet. Dark bags are the fucking worst and the only time I've had trouble loading film was the two times I used a darkbag. Otherwise it takes <1 min for me to load 35mm or 120.
>>3072601
If you only hit the shutter when there's a picture actually worth taking, you'd be spending a fraction of what you're doing. 90% of the photos posted on here are, quite frankly, not worth the cost-per-frame.
>>3072601
Let us say, what? An average of $10 per roll ($5 per roll, $5 for developing)?
A7R is $1,500, so you shot 150 rolls last year?
Holy shit! I shoot at most 2 or 3 a month.
Hey guys going to shoot my first film slr (nikon n6006) I've read up on some guides for it too. I'm taking it to a track meet though with some shitty iso 400 Walmart film. Any tips?
>>3072789
Expose towards the highlights, not the shadows.
Unlike a dslr it is hard to pull form shadows.
>>3072801
The n6006 has matrix exposure and i read on matts classic cameras it was decent. Am okay leaving with that on/center? Or do I need to make sure to use spot on my subject

Yeah I'd leave it on, it's pretty hard to dill up 400 colour film.
I dropped off a roll of film at CVS about 6 weeks ago. They said it would take 2 weeks when i dropped it off (which is still a long fucking time).
What do?
>inb4 i got what i deserved for developing at cvs, i'm new to film and it was my first roll, i just went to the closest place to my house. i dont live in a very film-friendly area, no camera stores anywhere near here

call them, then suck it up and use somewhere else next time (or DIY)

I've been using walmart and they seem to get the job done fine.

I have no idea what the problem is. My 120 loads have been perfect every time, only trouble I've had was with the tape end, and I don't particularly like dealing with the backing paper. Trick as I see it is keeping the film's curl in control so it feeds evenly through the bearing ratchet.
But I have the manual dexterity of a keyboard jockey, so nevermind.

Why are you cross-shopping Velvia and Portra? Makes zero sense.
