A crane is a crane, but I do prefer to, and usually do, to work with more advanced deck and offshore cranes.
My specialty is the PLC programming of them.
Nothing wrong with a davit crane tho.

what exactly do you do when you go onboard? the ships engineers/deck crew don't look the cranes? what country are you located in?

It depends on the job, I do programming, electrical, mechanical and hydraulic work as needed.
The crew is responsible for the general maintenance of the cranes, I'm there to help with stuff requiring specialized competence.

I live in Norway, but mostly work abroad, all over Europe, America and Asia.

It depends on how well you'd earn, what you'd do, your people skills and your colleagues.

It can be very shit when things are not good, but also amazing fun when they are.
What I like about my job is that it's fixed to one vessel, but I travel all over and get to see lots of different operations.
Doing the work I do it's not possible to have a fixed schedule, so I've worked trips ranging from 2 hours to 7 weeks.
What's common in the industry depends a lot on where you're based.

You go to interesting places but you take shitty photos that show no effort. Do you think about composition at all before you press the shutter?

They're all film, the square ones Fuji Pro 160NS in a Flexaret VII, the 2:3 ones Superia 400 in a Olympus Pen e.e.3 half frame camera.

Curious if i want to go on a ship, in say, a week or 2, I live right next to the coast in California.

What would I have to do? Do they ever let civilians on for any reason? Or are there any boating jobs that require little training? I wouldn't mind doing this before school starts in a month, the ocean looks beautiful.

Without any safety training or relevant skills you wouldn't be allowed to work anywhere, especially not just for a few weeks.

These days you'll have a really hard time finding any commercial vessels even allowing civilians to travel with them as paying passengers.
