Indicates how much battery power remains. Memory card capacity is on the dial's outermost rim. RHN I don't understand.
Also, the button in the middle of the shutter release is one of the worst possible camera UI decisions. Kill it with fire.

found 35ti from flea market, makes horrible noice when turning on, but seems to hold its focus correctly so not bothered to send it to service... easily sharpest nikon glass i've ever seen

Combining ruggedness, accuracy and reliability is very expensive; even the rangefinder mechanism on Leicas will drift over time.
Then you lose the multi-purpose capabilities of a display that's easily viewable in the dark, and considering the digital nature of modern cameras, the mechanisms would have to be driven by electronically at some point anyway.
You're giving up a lot just for some cool factor.
