I'm not sure these will display very well in the browser. I edited these as 16 bit TIFF's. Then Saved them for web, THEN resized them down to this size (Assigning sRGB).

They seem to crush the blacks compared to what's visible in photoshop. But I haven't done a lot of testing.

Leh was from March 21st to 25th. Still the off season but it was a very comfortable 5 degrees Celsius during the day and only -3 at night. I would totally recommend it before the crowds hit because it's such a nice break from how hectic the rest of India is.

Buddhist temples are cool and all but I was stoked to see snow covered mountains!

Leh was my favorite part.

The dust Devil is shot high because the town looks like shit below it (is a parking area of sorts and some dirty sandstone roofs.

And I can say the Sigma 10-20mm has some major quirks that drive me nuts. But it has a lot of character in its distortions.

These look good! How did you deal with the green sun and harsh sunlight with black shadows that India is known for?

Green sun? Might be a side effect of the pollution levels in the air I suppose. It was always hazy, maybe 6-10 km visibility. Not a place I would want to live for the air quality issues...

Regardless, I feel like the camera spoils me. Every time I shoot with the D800 I feel like I have to choose between too much magenta or too much green tinge (Especially in the shadows).

And I think that's just because the S5 is so damn accurate I've been spoiled. I edit in Prophoto RGB, 16 bit (Tiff's, as exported from the RAW's). But I still have to convert it to sRGB for web use.

Dynamic Range on the S5 is great for saving the shadows. You can really push the camera to highlights extreme edge. And then chances are you aren't clipping anything in the shadows. So just being a bit careful in the editing and a bit of masking usually keeps from clipping unless you are literally shooting the sun in the frame.

I can post a RAW if anyone wants to play with it.

Oh yeah, Noise looks a lot cleaner.

The picture feels a lot colder in exposure and colour than my original, Probably mostly because it's slightly darker. Which is more true to the original scene (Overcast, no direct sunlight on the scene). Interesting to see side by side.

I like the tone of my shot because it feels warmer, but there definitely is a lot technically flawed in it.

Believe it or not that "smoke" was a dust devil that picked up as i was waiting for sunset. It travelled right to left across the entire frame in about 60 seconds, was pretty awesome to see.

Your right about some shots being soft, especially the right side of the shots taken with the Sigma 10-20mm.

I was happy with the trip for sure, this trip was not based around taking pictures, but i had a ton of opportunities for photo's. If I was more of a street photographer I would have had even more of a blast. Especially in Varanasi.

I did some research, but never picked one up. That said I never felt like they had the dynamic range to rival the more flexible option (for me) which was to buy a D800 / another nikon FF body.

I haven't done any research lately though, this was all 2014/2015 that I was looking.

One can tell that this trip was not about getting certain pictures or photography itself, otherwise the pictures would've been more postcard like and some of the motives wouldnt even have been shot.
They are however, for the most part, very thought through traveling photos that make me feel like a tourist there myself.

Yup, I own 2. One I've converted to IR. and One stock one.

I used to have a D70 IR converted camera. But the S5 is much much better.

And I've yet to use any other camera that has as good color accuracy / reproduction as the S5.

I would grab a S5 and do the conversion. The D200 and D70 weren't far apart in their dynamic range / colour reproduction. and the S5 is miles better, and pairs nicer with Photoshop's temperature settings. (I had to use Jpeg and custom WB on the D70 otherwise the natural color balance was completely out of range of Photoshop's temperature slider)

I haven't looked but S5's should be dirt cheap now.

Dude the noise get's bad after ISO 200. It's not a camera designed to go above ISO 100. For such a low MP count (6) It's terribly grainy. But it was designed to do studio / skin tones well. And I think it is just a nice coincidence that it's good for landscapes as well.

what does a camera for infrared conversion need? can i just grab the cheapest dslr for my system and perform surgery on it or what should one look into before doing that?

I remember that some sensors have a filter that can't be swapped because it's literally glued on. So definitely spend some time on Google first.

I always paid for the conversion rather than risk it myself. So buying second hand infrared cameras is handy to avoid the liability risk.

Keep in mind not all lenses work well with it. Older more metal lenses are usually worse. Newer cheaper plastic lenses like the 18-55 VR II work great. But they also vary....
