Hey /p/ I am currently writing an essay for university on the construction of collective identities on 4Chan. Since selfdefinition/perception is the most important part of identities, I prepared a few questions and it would be nice to get some answers.
1. Do you visit /p/ regularly (more than once a week)?
2. Why do you visit /p/?
3. Do you prefer it over similar sites, if so, why?
4. Is there something like a /p/ identity in your opinion?
(my understanding of identity below)
5. What does this identity consist of?
6. Would you consider yourself as a member of that identity?
7. Anything else you want to say?
Collective identity is understood as having two dimensions, content and contestation.
Main aspects of content are:
- identity defining norms and practices
- social purposes
- relationships to other identities
- shared worldviews or understandings of political/material conditions and interests
Contestation is the degree of agreement within an identity group over the content of the shared identity. It is an ongoing process that defines the content of the identity.

>1. Do you visit /p/ regularly (more than once a week)?
yup
>2. Why do you visit /p/?
A good story can be boring if narrated incorrectly. Looking at photos can be boring too, but here they are narrated through drama and shitposting. That makes them more interesting as long as you like drama and shitposting.
>3. Do you prefer it over similar sites, if so, why?
Bc here you find the above mentioned, plus anonimity.
>4. Is there something like a /p/ identity in your opinion?
yup, like in any other board
>5. What does this identity consist of?
/p/ ciclejerk and meme knowledge
>6. Would you consider yourself as a member of that identity?
As long as I consistently shitpost and make photos, yes. Ok let's be sincere, forget about the photos.

>1. Do you visit /p/ regularly (more than once a week)?
Every goddamn day
>2. Why do you visit /p/?
I am interested in photography, see others' work, read up on gear, occasionally get some tips through others' fuckups or the rare helpful Anon
>3. Do you prefer it over similar sites, if so, why?
"Prefer over".... no, but I do like the greater negativity and less "polite" (for lack of a better word) air. It's refreshing.
>4. Is there something like a /p/ identity in your opinion?
No
>5. What does this identity consist of?
n/a
>6. Would you consider yourself as a member of that identity?
n/a
>7. Anything else you want to say?
This is a waste of your time desu

Just don't.

>1. Do you visit /p/ regularly (more than once a week)?
Yes, pretty much every day.
>2. Why do you visit /p/?
Amusement.
>3. Do you prefer it over similar sites, if so, why?
Yes, because I'm able to opine freely and anonymously.
>4. Is there something like a /p/ identity in your opinion?
yes
>5. What does this identity consist of?
The aspiring locally reknowned fine art photographer who is above selective colour photos in facebook groups, but below actually engaging with their local fine art community.
/p/ is a film board.
>6. Would you consider yourself as a member of that identity?
Sure, why not
>7. Anything else you want to say?
Photography is a game and like any game you must level up. Sloughing off your digicuck shame is the next stage of growth after you put down your phone and pick up a dedicated camera. 8x10 colour carbon transfers are the final boss for those who do not ascend to the plane of the immortals at the 35mm b&w stage.

>You know most people don't browse only one board right?
well people frequent different places IRL and they change their behavior depending where they are. we all create and finetune a different persona for each place, and this is done by the received feedback and our perception of what is the appropiate behavior in that place. /p/ certainly has a "way of being" thats different from your standard /ck/ or /a/ user. if fact, most change the way they write when they OP a thread, as opposed to when they are replying to one -except for the feral ones-, because its akin to be speaking on front of the class or your peers at work.
we all load a set of predetermined responses and words when we enter this board, thats the virtual "identity" we construct. hello OP you faggot, this is all OC donut steel.

there is actually a bunch of literature on 4chan already

self-defention/perception is not the most important part of identity. Having a false perception of self is one of the leading causes of psychopathology.
