I'm usually pretty active on the discord chat, but due to work I can't get on the cat right now. I also haven't been able to shoot much, but I got out this morning, and thought I'd share the moody morning fog shots I managed to get.
The images are low res because I can't get anything but Medium JPEGs onto my tablet right now. They're edited in snapseed, when I get home I'll do the raws up way more comprehensively.
All shot with my trusty LX100.
Anyways, enjoy, or don't.

Oh no the processing is actually pretty shit. So I made some mistakes since I'm not used to snapseed and editing on a 7 inch tablet is a bitch.
1) pulled highlights too hard - it's a 2 megabyte JPEG lol. I shouldn't have gone running after definition in the skies.
2) experimenting with too many sliders haphazardly.
The critique is legit. I normally do push and pull my files a lot, and with my xt10 raws I 'usually' get away with it. I also don't really seek realism with my photos, I will bend the reality a bit to get what I want to see.
I'm gonna post some shots from today, where I sort of made the same mistakes lol, but maybe a bit less.
Thanks for the feedback.
>>3049638
>not shooting raw
Today I got to shoot for my commanding officer, since they know I like photography and they wanted to document some parts of the exercise. Was actually quite cool, but most of the shots were pretty boring documentary style stuff.
That said, I did get a few shots for myself. Again, post processing is very weak - I have a very specific workflow involving LR, CS5 and Nik, and trying to pivot into jpeg editing on snapseed is actually harder than I thought. Here we go.

I almost always shoot Raw. In fact all of these shots I HAVE the raw, but I have no way of developing them. I can't even get full JPEGs off my LX100. The LX100 has pretty shit jpegs too, nothing like my xt10. So it's a shit sandwich. Please bear in mind, I'm currently living in a tent in the wastelands of Alberta lol. Once I get home I'll be processing all of these properly.
This shot is pretty boring, but the skies WERE dramatic. Even if I fucking turned them purple like a moron.

Thanks. Its tricky to shoot around my schedule, but I try to do it anyways. If anyone has a better mobile alternative to Snapseed I'm all ears. Literally no one in that thread offered any constructive criticism. Isi posted my site, and the one picture that she decided was the worst on my site when we had the same discussion on the discord.
Otoh, the guy here observed that my processing here was bad - because it is, for reasons I've laid out below, that I will learn to cope with.

For any of the non-autistic p fellows that read this, what do you suggest I try to shoot? Maybe abstracts? I'm basically jailed in an urban ops village, with featureless buildings. There's some shit poplar trees on the fringes, and the ground is all just dirt / sand.

But no thanks. Life is pretty good other than these few months a year. Maybe you should seek counselling for your rage? Also, still waiting for your picture thread?
>>3052007
Thanks for the suggestions. I do try to shoot within my neighborhood at home, and I enjoy it, but right now I'm confined to roughly...2 square kilometers? Maybe less. Could definitely try a multiple exposure though...or maybe a nature in conflict with humans?
Cheers
>>3052009
No worries, try to have fun with it. I find that forcing myself to shoot photos because I haven't done so in a while leads to crappy photos. Having a specific goal usually changes that and makes it more enjoyable.
Also if I understand "urban ops village" correctly you could try to get some photos of the action if possible, the results may be interesting.
>>3052011
Yeah unfortunately we're not using it for training this time around, we're just housing our HQ here while our high level battle group training is going on in the field.
Might be able to go catch some of that action though - like tanks firing and what not. Will try to see!
I also don't like forcing things, but I get rather itchy if I don't shoot at least a few shots every few days.

That is fucking terrible.
>Flat as a pancake
Learn how to manipulate shadows to add depth, not destroy it.
>Crunchy details
Learn how to add contrast and sharpening to bring focus to your subject, as opposed to making the whole thing painful to look at
>Bad colours
Looks like you've massively underexposed then tried to recover the foreground, the result, especially on fuji, is smeary, muddy colours.
>that sky
confirmed for massively underexposed, this attempt to save the details of the branches against the white sky looks like cancer, learn how to work within the constraints of a digital sensor.
>it's not even level
This one's self explanatory, no it doesn't matter if "the building was wonky" when the ground, the building verticals and horizontals and the trees all lean in the same direction.
>composition
You could have made something interesting out of the black shape in the left of the frame, instead there's massively distorted, leaves that haven't had their reflectivity considered in any way, these ugly branches and shit pull your eye out to the edge of the frame to the least visually appealing area.
Also, the image quality is terri-bad, I had to check I didn't have Opera turbo on about 4 times before I believed it. However your gears poor performance shouldn't be blamed for the atrocity that is this photo.
>>3052014
Sounds very interesting actually. If allowed to do so you could get photos in the ops room while the training is going on maybe, just a thought. Hope you have a big lens to get some tank action!
I know exactly what you mean though, I get really itchy as well.
>>3052018
No photos in the op room lol, I'm sort of in charge of that sort of thing. No photos, no cell phones, no fancy watches, no anything with an EM emission, no cameras, no recorders.
Yeah I don't have a big lens for the tanks or LAVs but I can get reasonably close to them while they're jockeying, as long as I wear earpro.
See that's what I'm talking about
>>3052017
this is how feedback should be handled on /p/.
Starts with an insult, goes into detailed bullet points about what is bad and gives actual suggestions.
>>3052019
Haha yeah I thought so. Still, think of the fact that only a small number of people have access to a site and scene like the one you will be at. It'll be a nice opportunity, even with the 2sq km cordon.
>>3052017
>confirmed for massively underexposed
Not isi - I'm the roaming moose. What do you consider underexposed? I ask because it seems like exposure can be a bit of a creative choice. For example, if I crush my blacks to death in camera to get some definition in the sun, I've massively underexposed, but I did it on purpose to get silhouettes.
When I shoot landscapes, I tend to shoot 'middle of the road' so I can massage the raw into what I want. See pic related from a Fuji raw.
>>3052017
forgot the pic like a retard...
>>3052022
True! I guess you get so used to it, that it doesn't seem interesting to you if you know what I mean.
>>3052020
I agree, details are good.
I will add, that in my profession we give what we call a shit sandwich - something we like something we don't like, something we like, when we give feedback to subordinates. It's effective in that you're not just unloading shit and demoralizing people. Just a thought. When I critique people, I try to think of one thing about the shot that I like before I sperg out.
>>3052023
Ok, cool, so you don't know lesson 1 on exposure, I can help you out here :)
Expose for your subject, everything else is moot.
As an example
>>3049652
The highlight raped sky adds nothing to this shot, and by destroying your highlights you also removed the contrast and vibrancy in the dudes skin.
You fucked up the subject, and therefore whole shot, so you could add something that adds nothing to the whole image.
>>3052024
You see the way the branches in the sky are blooming and the ones further down are crunchy and gross.
This is cancer fuelled aids.
>>3052026
Yeah I know exactly what you mean. I work at a polymers lab. Basically spazzed out taking photos on my first month or two but now it all seems a bit bland.
On the other hand I am working on creating a set from my time here so who knows, maybe it'll come out alright.
>>3052029
I know it in theory. In practice, I'm probably stuck on the middle of the road thing, due to extensively shooting landscapes where I generally balance the exposure in the face of challenging dynamic range.
It's a valid point though. I remember dialing in negative expo comp on that shot to fight back against the zebras appearing in the sky, and that wasn't necessary. Thanks.
>>3052028
You only give a shit sandwich if you're paying the person to do a job for you.
If they're a relative unknown, honest feedback that gets straight to the point is the most useful. There's no point in rewarding bad behaviours.
>>3052031
Colorful description. I guess I pulled highlights too hard on that one. I still like the shot, but I definitely see your point.
>>3052033
if the scene is challenging and the sky wants to blow, don't fight it, it will look MUCH more natural if you just let it blow on it's own accord.
>>3052032
wtf is a polymers lab lol
>>3052028
>>3052034
I'm going to agree with the honest, harsh feedback. It gets the point across, it's memorable enough to make you rethink your process and after a while you just stop being offended by it and only filter out the useful info.
If anything, it's in the sticky. I just don't get why people equate harsh feedback with
>hurrdurr this is shit lol
>>3052036
>it will look MUCH more natural
See you hit my point exactly. That's a personal preference - looking natural. I've specifically said earlier that looking natural isn't always my end goal. In some cases, IE when I stack 100 images, I am actually avoiding a natural look as I'm looking for something else. Maybe you like the 'natural' landscape look - but I don't always.
It doesn't make you wrong though, and you've inspired me to try to just accept the dynamic range as it comes.
Since I can only shoot jpeg right now, I guess I'd better try that anyways. Pulling highlights on medium jpegs - well you've seen the results.
>>3052038
>>hurrdurr this is shit lol
The poster you also tagged is actually being useful. I like that. Harsh criticism is why I come here. On facebook or flickr you just get
'waow 10/10 very pretty'
Here on occasion you get something truthful and useful.
>>3052037
Haha think of it as a glorified chemistry laboratory that focuses on making plastics and testing them. I have to do something to make it relaxing while I'm juggling beakers full of cancer all day.
>>3052042
I wouldn't mind visiting a place like that - but chemistry goes pretty far over my head. Too many maths.
>>3052040
>stacking one hundred shots
kek.
why would you do that.
>>3052044
Seriously?
If you want to create a sort of dreamy look in daytime, long exposures are neat, but in the day you require some very heavy light stopping. Being cheap, I stack images to get that somewhat 'pictorialist' look.
>>3052044
or
>>3052045
Yeah I did advanced math in high school, squeaked by with a pass, but I found it so boring that I brain dumped it and haven't mathed since.
>>3052046
>being cheap
>Don't use $5 filter that lasts for life
>repeatedly ass rape the shutter instead
>>3052053
>intervalometer is built in
>at the time I had only an Lx100 and filters of the 10 stop nature are too heavy for little lens
>there are other advantages to stacking.
If I take 100+ images at 1/50th with the frequency of 1 per 10 seconds, I'm shooting close to 10 minutes. You would need a crazy filter to do that - I assure you, nothing that you can buy for 5 dollars in any world.
I like the results just fine.
>>3052060
Yeah it's true - you're actuating the shutter a lot, but the lx100 is a leaf shutter, and it still seems to be going strong.
Have one more stack :)
>>3052069
I like it. I like what it does to clouds. Great use of foreground by the way.
>>3052071
I think it's a tad noisy close to the edges like the pillars on the left and right
but
I like the streaks of water on the bottom right and especially the soft light on the water in the mid-left, that's a nice dreamy look you've got going on!
Mind if I ask how much time you spend in pp? Both for the stacking and any curve/slider play afterwards.
>>3052071
Le epic long exposure water :)
>>3052071
your processing sucks shit from the anus of russian hooker
>>3052073
It's not too bad.
So I have to import to LR, then I basically take away all the contrast, sharpen and NR. I apply that sync to all the images, then export them to JPEG.
From there I actually use an astro program called Star Stax. It produces a tif file that I bring back into LR and finish off.
Sounds terrible, but it's reasonably quick.
>>3052096
Meaning you don't like it. If it offends you so much, click away my fragile friend.
>>3052095
Here you go. Non long exposure water.
From yesterday morning. Again - medium jpeg in snapseed. Tried to go softer on the processing, this is close to sooc.

this processing is less desirable than mexican neighbours.

You're a whiny troll. Here's an idea, why don't you post your own thread, and show us how it's done?
Today I fucked around a bit after work. At first I was trapped on camp, so I just shot some interesting skies, using the so called 'dynamic monochrome' jpeg preset on my LX100. Obviously I have raw files that I'll keep for when I get access to my computer again.

And then I got to go for a walk! I cleared with my opso and found a path I could take, so I went out into the plains.

And on the way back 'home' I found a set of antlers. I also shot a b and w version, but I sort of liked the colour here. Used the 'bleach bypass' effect in camera and tweaked it later in snapseed.
There's very little leeway for adjustment with a 2mb jpeg.

I don't understand your post lol, but if you're talking about the IQ, I explain that in a previous post.
