Hi /p/ !
I would like to make a caffenol recipe for films, as I have few days to kill...
I found a receipe with baking soda but it doesn't work.
What I have here is :
-caustic soda
-baking soda
-sodium sulfite
-coffee
-vitamin C pure
Do you know any recipe with this ? Can't find washing soda in my town...

ask at a pharmacy.. they usually have it
or
heat your baking soda to 200°C[400°K] to turn it into washing soda..

Really ? Washing soda ? Are you sure about that ? Sounds really strange to me... One recipe is kind of working, and I'm trying to improve it with sodium silicate found washing powder. Hope it'll be the same reaction as washing soda.

Give me the volume of your dev tank and the film you want to develop in it and I'll recalculate my recipe for you. Also, what kind of coffee and how fresh is the ascorbic acid?
>>3042179
What is the look that caffenol gives you like?
>>3042204
brown-stained negatives with relatively fine grain. This is an Ilford Pan 400 scan

I have few tanks, so 1l would be great :-)
and the ascorbic acid is pure (said the pharmacy girl), so I guess 99.9% and effervescent.

the working solution deteriorates and stops worki g very quickly. you always have to mix up your working solution from powders just before dev. that's why I asked for the final tank volume, unless you're okay recalculating from 1l
For 1l:
NaOH(caustic soda) 7.78g
NaHCO3(baking soda) 16.3g
Vit. C 20g
Instant coffee 45g
Add to 850ml of distilled water in order given above mixing until every ingredient fully dissolves before adding the next one. Top off to 1l. Use freshly mixed.
For 400 speed classic emulsions at 23°C develop 14.5min with normal agitation scheme. Don't use stop bath, rinse extremely well, the more you rinse, the less stained the negs will be. Fun fact, you can test rinsing progress by tasting the rinse water. Fix normally.
Right, forgot to add, mixing lye and baking soda in the correct stechiometric proportions basically gives you the same ionic solution makeup as washing soda, skipping the tedious heating/dehydrating baking soda step entirely.

How long should the development time be for 1600?

no clue. it's the "caffenol delta STD" recipe, there's a ton of dev times online, do your own homework here. It's an awful developer to push with though, it barely gets decent results at box speed.

wow, this is super cool ! Thanks a lot !!
>>3042201
cause baking soda (NaHCO3) is water free soda ash or washing soda (Na2CO3)
OP here.
Question : can anyone tell me why we always add Coffee ? What is the chemical used here ?

>The active substance in coffee is caffeic acid, that behaves similar to pyrogallol and is a very compensating developing agent.

Awesome. Just read about a guy who had the same idea I had : he replaced instant coffee with salvia (both had caffeic acid). The idea is not having the brown filter on your film. Love this idea, will try it tomorrow, and I think salvia is cheaper than coffee.

Man, I just tested your recipe and it's working fucking fine :-) doing another roll of 12 pictures right now, pictures on it's way.

Looking forward to the photos! Honestly, I think it's very imperfect and inefficient with the ingredients but given the price and ease of diy rodinal I don't bother with caffenol anymore. Would rather use that vitamin C for diy xtol instead.

I already ordered sodium sulfite, and I'm doing DIY rodinal asap. But caffenol is fun. Really imperfect, but fun. Not gonna replace my Xtol with this...

As I said. Not the best developper, but that's funny. I think I'm done with it, looking for the rodinal which seems fun and doing excellent job.
