>Why are these so expensive? Not memeing, genuinely curious.
>>3041947
incorrect
It's because they're modern remakes and limited editions, which makes them essentially brand new versions of 60's mechanical masterpieces.
All the style and quality with none of the wear and decay.
To compare, pls see the new reman'd Aston DB4GT's and Lightweight E-Types.

Bessa III is my dream camera. I almost blew my savings on one.
>>3041955
But the old ones aren't expensive, they're trash.
Consult the scriptures, my son:
>This Nikon SP is nice, but feels nowhere near as nice as it's intended competitor, the LEICA M3
>I wouldn't go out of my way to get one for photography
>For the same money, one can get genuine used LEICA cameras and lenses instead, whose optics are much better

>>3041935
The GF670, G617, and X-Pan are totally grails for me.
>>3041964
Shouldn't you compare the Nikon SP to the Contax that it's copying, in the same way that you should compare a Canon copy of a Leica III?

>>3042176
If 1000 dollars is expensive you need to find a better jorb.
And it appears I am an absolute dumb ass for not buying the 369 dollar one from the local camera shop FML. if it's still there next time I pass through i'll grab it
>>3042183
You're kind of stupid, huh? Don't quite grasp how global economics work?
>>3042182
very beautiful. i guess mf rangefinders are very appreciated here
>>3042183
I wouldn't spend 1000usd on pic related even though I really want to own one. Of course the TC-1 is a beautiful object and a nice camera to use but it just doesn't offer enough value to justify that high price tag when you can get similar results and user experience with a camera that costs like 1/5th of the price.
Also, the collectors go nuts for anything that is rare, weird and/or expensive, even though the camera in question itself wouldn't really even be that good. So this way a mediocre camera can become a cult item that costs way more than it should based on its performance. Because of this cult status, the people who would actually want to use that camera can't afford to buy it.
>>3042222
camera collectors need to be shot in the face.

I got to play with one it's a one-trick pony. f1 is pretty much useless depending on how good the AF is on your body, and stopped down to f8 or f11 it's worse than the plastic fantastic. The 1.2 is better in every way and even the 1.4 gives it a run for its money in the IQ department.
That lens, like many lenses from the early EOS days, was Canon flexing their muscles at Nikon essentially saying, "hey look what we can do".

I always feel guilty when I talk about gear, unless it's about an Olympus OM-X.

Leica M6 & 35mm cron. I'm fine with My poorfag Bessa R2 & CV 35mm f2.5 kit too though.
For MF, a Mamiya 6.

But the entire LF infrastructure is expensive, I would basically have to revise my entire darkroom, with more expensive equipment. I only want to do that once I can spend that money without it hurting. Of course I could do contact prints but where's the fun in that.

I don't know about european or american market very much but standart canon lenses are much cheaper than nikons. i'm a nikon user but i will suggest getting a canon just because of that. but if you have nikon lenses or just want to get a nikon, my suggestion is f90x it's cheap, works with manual lenses, matrix metering, 4 aa batteries. only problem is weight and double exposure. you can do double exp. with mf26 databack
>>3043828
Try the Yashica E-35 GSN. It's an aperture- priority, automatic rangefinder from the early 70's. It comes with a beautiful 45mm f1.7 fixed lens, and, because it's a rangefinder, they're incredibly fast and easy to focus.
A tested, well working unit will run you under $100. Rando copies that haven't had their battery adapted (5.6V mercury batteries are no longer sold), or have a worn rubber pad (leads to "Pad of Death") will run you around $50.

Transparent plastic reel, I never take it off for re-exposure. Definitely try it, the results are very rewarding, especially on larger formats, plus the necessity to get it perfeftly right in-camera is a pleasant challenge.

Ah cool, that makes more sense. I've bucket developed 8mm and 16mm film motion picture film before so I'd imagine you could probably also do it like that for still formats, though it would obviously necessitate a darkroom
I think I'll probably give B&W reversal a go after E6
>>3049854
No, directly making positives on the film I shot. Every bw film is a "reverse film" if you develop it witha reversal process. They just arent optimised for that like dedicated reversal films are (more transparent base, for example).

do you use sulphuric acid, or something else? how easy is it to get the chemicals you use?
>>3049860
I just googled it, and yes, holy shit, I did not know this.

What are the advantages of reversal film? Besides being able to use it in a projector?
>>3049862 #
Looking at your bw snapshits on a wall blown up to 1x1m? Higher boxspeed sometimes? Finer grain? Looks cool I guess?
>>3049861 #
>do you use sulphuric acid, or something else?
Yes, sulphuric acid and potassium dichromate, keeps forever, doesnt stain, kills the environment.
>how easy is it to get the chemicals you use?
It usually takes a couple months to get anything shipped to Pitcairn island, I'm afraid, and you have to know the right people.

Is there a decent 35mm compact that has a slowest shutter speed that's hand-holdable? I'd prefer to have underexposed shots over blurry ones.
You can kind of fake it with exposure compensation but that feature gets pricey
>>3049867
That's pretty awesome. Who the fuck just sells hexavalent chromium compounds and sulfuric acid to private customers, though? That's some nasty shit I hope you have some actual chemistry experience and you're not just playing with this shit in your kitchen sink.
>>3049903
If you find a Ricoh ff-90/70 they're cheap have a nice lens and have 2 stop exposure comp and flash hold down option which then selects the lowest shutter. It's a 28mm f/2.8. Nothing else really rings a bell, I'm assuming most have no feature like that cause it's assumed you'd use flash before getting an underexposed image or in low light situations be using a tripod. Who knows though I don't know much.
>>3049908
PhDfag here, I can literally order anything I want through our online ordering system. I bought all my stuff through Sigma Aldrich. So I guess if you know someone in a chemistry department that can hook you up, you're golden.
>>3049912
Well I'm in a chemistry department, but considering a grad student here got busted buying meth precursors recently I don't think they would be too open to me trying to buy stuff for home use. This reversal process sounds pretty complicated, but I have considered trying to mix up my own regular B&W developer since the HC-110 I like keeps getting harder to buy. Something like caffenol, but hopefully a bit more professional.
There's even an old darkroom in my lab from when the electron microscopes used to use sheets of X-ray film.
>>3049544
Can you post some shots you've taken with it? I'm wanting to get one and am having trouble finding photos taken with it
I would pull the trigger but I'm about to lose my job and have nothing lined up
>>3049918
What really makes me REEEEE is that I can't transport all of the chems I've bought. I finish in a few months and I'll have to leave this shit behind.
I think you can buy from SA but it costs significantly more expensive.

nice cameras, I have owned them for quite a while and love them both
>>3042937
I owned a 3.5 planar and now have a 3.5 tessar, actually like the tessar better, but would love the 2.8
>>3041932
I'll post the Rollei 35 as my dream camera not because it is a great camera, or expensive.
I have owned 3 of them, 2 Singapore 35s and 1 German 35.
It is my dream camera because I keep dreaming that it will the camera I want not the camera it is. I find it a great camera on paper but a cumbersome and disappointing camera to use
I dream that it had a coupled rangefinder, better advance lever, and less noisy shutter

Hey man I just sold a Crown Graphic for 350 CAD. They really aren't expensive if you know where to look. Go make a WTB ad on APUG.org or largeformatphotography.info. Go to the latter for information on buying and cutting x-ray film, which will make shooting the damn thing much more affordable until you get the hang of it. I would also recommend trying a monorail, which can be had for as little as 75$ or so if you look hard. The Crown and Speed Graphics allow pretty much zero movements. There are better compromises between movements (the main draw of LF photography besides a larger negative) and portability/hypothetical hand-hold-ability like the Toyo 45aii.

Some dude on le reddits bought one for like $50 from a thrift store and didn't know what it was. It wasn't a Linhof, but similar, and it was found to be worth at least 1.5K.
Someone on youtube noted how fucking ridiculously difficult it is to focus and adjust the camera, and you basically need a film lab at your disposal to get usable pics. I'd avoid it.

Was in Korea and saw these in the camera shops, my gf wanted one cos it looks cute - but I held back saying that it could be a clunk little turdlet. And it is. What a surprise.
I'd even say the Canonet QL17 is not great either, cumbersome and tedious to use, need to shill it to some rubes.

If I remember correctly those cameras were supposedly designed for and used by tour group photographers. They would line up a tour group usually getting off a bus then snap a picture of each group, send it off for development and have prints by the time the tour was over.
With my 6x7 camera, 10 pictures is more than enough. With 35mm cameras and 36 exposure rolls I just sit on a roll for a while because I only took 10, 20, or 30 pictures. If I don't have the time to take pictures the roll just sits there until I finish it. With 10 exposure I usually finish one day of leisurely photography while walking around and I can get that roll developed and get those pictures right away. Worst case scenario I put another roll in.
This is very personal though. If you shoot a lot of pictures and changing rolls is not what you want to do then that camera is not for you.
