Hi /p/!
I would like to buy a good compact film camera, I own an Olympus XA 3 but I would like to have an antofocus camera with a flash.
I like the Yashica T4/T5, everybody seems to say that the lens is fucking awsome but I don't know if it's made of metal or plastic. Seems like plastic.
I like the contax t2 look, but it's fucking expensive, and doesn't seem a lot better than the yashica.
What do you know about the nikon 35ti or the minolta riva mini/ leica mini ?
TL;DR : contax t2 ? Leica "meme" mini ? Nikon 35ti ? Yashica T4/T5 ?

The yashica's are very very plasticy. The mju I is my favorite 35mm compact and its alot sturdier than the yashica's. Also cheaper.
>>3033985
Yeah, fuck. That's what I thought. I wan't to bring this camera to bars with friends, and don't really wan't it to break if it fall down. I already broke two camera's like that.
So, for you, the mju is better than the yashica ? Good to know because it's a lot cheaper...

Fuck my english. Sorry.
>>3033994
In my opinion the mju ii is all you need. I would suggest buying a good copy though. Ive found a lot of them at thrift stores but they tend to have damaged electronics in them that will make the camera fail sooner or later.

i have like five of those, im pretty good killing film compacts so i get lots of them just in case. i gift them to friends too.

and you're that type of guys.

Nikon 35ti is about good as it gets, it has the famous advanced matrix metering and brilliantly sharp lens. Also, the build quality is very nice (titanium alloy) bc it was ridiculously expensive when new.
The only downside is the slightly larger body when compared to some really small 35mm cameras such as the Contax T rangefinder, T3 p&s, Olympus XA/Mju and the Minolta TC-1 p&s.
Ricoh R1 is the best compact film camera for its price. Its like a budget GR1
Here is what Ken Memewell had to say about it

I want an AA-35/Recorder so bad. I don't care if it's an f/4 lens, I still fuck with the aesthetic.

Yeah, I liked to design but it seems that a lot of seller on eBay try to get rid of their broken / malfunctioning Ricoh r1. I think I'll try the mju.

It's a no for me.

whups, didn't read to the end. Anyway I just bought my second R1 for 30 eurodollars. I had several Mju1 and mju2 and the R1 is better than both of them better lense and in camera gimmicks. Also the viewfinder is much much better and has shows framlines which both the viewfinders in the mouse don't do. personally this was the biggest selling point for me. Also the R1 is much much more quiet. If you want I can go into even more detail and comparison. Also note on most R1 the LCD is broken thats why ppl sell them as broken however you will not need rly need the LCD since the buttons on the Ricoh actually do what they promise instead of the shitty mju buttons
T4 sux, mju ii is much faster.
I have a Ricoh R1s on the way. Will let y'all know how it is.
>>3033975
in the same boat as you op, i had an xa and wanted af so i got an mju ii and i love it, build quality is good (not as good as xa) autofocus is fairly quick but can shoot through glass and its really fucking small
>>3034196
There's one local for $25 with a broken top LCD. Worth getting?
these are surprisingly good and still cheap
they're a little bit slow and loud but I like mine a lot
>>3034205
ya the af of the mju2 is ever so slightly faster than the af of the R1 however there is a prefocus mode on the R1. So instead of the mju2 its possible to have no shutter lag on the R1. Also fcking nobody points that out about the mju2 is that to me if possible it tries to use the f2.8 which imo is nice to have in some situations but desu the lens needs to be stopped down in order to compete with most other compacts. In this regard I really like the mju1 better.
>>3034228
ya, for this price I doubt you will find a better point and shoot out there. I promise. just look up the manual on line and you should be good to go.
>>3034233
These generally go for <100 so in this price range you can also start looking for mju2
>>3034233
They used to be vastly underrated, but people have caught on and the prices reflect that.
If you can find one in a thrift then good on you, but good luck finding one for a good price in a shop that deals in second hand cameras or eBay.
>>3034238
I must be the wewest lad

Enjoy your broken flex cable.
Last week an opshop was trying to sell a Konica A4 (big mini precursor) for $12, had a look, immediately pointed out broken flex, got it for free.
My current plan is to pull it apart and sand the broken edges of the flex to reveal a flat surface of copper on each, and tape them together and hope for the best.

Already shot a couple rolls with it. It's pretty minty

Do you guys know any other small rangefinders, other than the Olympus XA-series and the Contax T? Preferable ones with metering and metal build.

this, the Nikon AF600 is quite good and doesn't have any sort of premium on it usually. I've found mine to be super reliable, and the programming is much more predictable than things like the Stylus Epic. Lens on the Olympus is better, though.
The programming is my main issue with the Stylus Epic - the programming prioritizes f/2.8 at all costs, and the shutter will go down to something like 4 seconds, which is just unusable in a compact. The Nikon only goes down to 1/8 second, which is more limiting but ultimately is way more usable for a 28mm compact. You can shoot in low light without flash on the Nikon and be confident that you'll probably get something usable/that the camera won't decide to jump down to a 1 second exposure without warning.
Also, never buy a Stylus Epic for more than $20 unless you can get your money back/it's been film tested. There's a light seal around the front of the lens that degrades over time, and beyond a certain point it's completely irreparable. Mine has a minor issue with it, and I had to tape up most of the inside of the camera just to get rid of the light leak.
TL;DR think about the Nikon AF600, sensible programming and a decent lens.

Minox
I have several mentioned in this thread, some comments:
>Mju I
>pros
- can be found really cheap, paid €10 for mine
- great ergonomics, feels solid
- image quality is brilliant (same triplet lens as XA apparently)
>cons
- af not the best
- corners a bit soft
- 1/15 slowest shutter speed
- no infinity focus mode
>Mju II
>pros
- basically the Mju I but better
- also weatherproof
- fast lens, probably the best for low light out of all these
>cons
- triangle bokeh can look ugly
- shutter triggers really easily
- getting more expensive all the time
- no infinity focus mode
>Ricoh R1
>pros
- great lens, I also prefer the ~28mm focal length
- fun 24mm mode
- really compact
- actually useful modes, including infinity focus
>cons
- super plastic flimsy feel
- af basically doesn't work in low light
- prewinds the film, makes changing rolls slow
>Konica AA-35
>pros
- super cool
- great lens
- half frame if you're into it
>cons
- noisy
- only 3 ISO settings
- flash charges really slowly
- 1/15 slowest shutter speed and slow lens
- rare & potentially really expensive
>>3034756
>cons
>- prewinds the film, makes changing rolls slow
this is also a pro as when the back gets opened while the film is loaded, the exposed photos are already in the can and don't get destroyed. Even if it never happens to you it is added insurance
>>3034648
Smallest I can think of that isn't an XA, is probably something like a 35 RC.
How do the "triplet" lenses on these high-end compacts compare with a Soviet tessar or sonnar? I'm assuming it's harder to put filters and hoods on compacts, if it's even possible? (the first kills B&W for me almost entirely: no yellow filter, no cpol.)
This is a wide angle to standard comparison, so not quite fair -- but, I'm sure compact camera aficionados have their reasons, and I'd like to hear some. Especially when some of these Nikon things have about the backpack/manbag footprint of an OM-2 w/ 28mm f/2.8.
recently got myself a canon ef35m. cheap, full auto and im pretty happy with it, this is with 200. very cool retro looks but noisey auto wind on

I've owned all the best compacts but ended up selling them all and settling on a collection of olympus mju cameras. Mju II and Mju III are my favourites.
