Get a welding glass insert, use it as an ND, you can later restore the color in post. Get a cheap ass tripod, do short exposures before and after the eclipse with the welding glass as filter, use liveview to focus manually. Take off the glass during the full eclipse (if you are in the region).
Shoot RAW. It would be better if you had the standard kit lens, wide angle with a good foreground would be much better. Like the eclipse near a temple or tower or some other landmark.
