yeah if only you could hit focus tho

Why is getting your film developed and scanned so fucking expensive? it's almost like $20 a roll in NYC.
>>
>>3029110
>why is this jew city so expensive?
>>
>>3029110
Do it yourself or send it away to be developed. Neither are difficult
>>
>>3029113
Send it to who?

>>3029112

Yeah, I guess I should expect a city full of these big nosed bandits to be ridiculously expensive.
>>
>>3029116
TheDarkRoom is alright, there's probably hundreds of places that you could send it off to.

If you grow the balls to do it yourself the dev costs comes to less than a dollar for a roll

>>
>>3029120
I think you may have a misconception of how big developing gear is.

A Paterson tank is the size of a jug of milk and that's pretty much the only thing you need. The chemicals come in ~500ml bottles or less. All you need is a room (or darkbag) that is totally dark with no windows, most people use their bathrooms at night. After you load the film in darkness you can do the rest in your kitchen sink. It's stupid easy and takes up no space at all

Yeah lad just youtube it, search 'B&W film developing tutorial' or something.

The basic process is this:

go into your totally dark room (or bag) with your paterson tank, the roll of film, a pair of scissors and a can opener. turn off the lights, wait for a couple minutes for your eyes to adjust (since it might not actually be totally dark). Grab your roll of film and the can opener and pop open the top. Pull out the spool inside and prepare for film to go everywhere. Scrabble around in the dark and film the leader of the film. Grab your scissors and cut the leader off, leaving a rounded section. Grab your reel, load the film into the 'ears' of the reel and start slowly walking it onto the reel. This will only take a 45 seconds or so to get the film onto the reel. Once you feel the spool from the cannister hit the reel, grab your scissors and cut it off, then reel the last bit of film onto the reel.

Get your reel, place it on the center spool of the tank and then put the tank back together, making sure to put the light tight lid on. You can turn on the lights now, and that's the hard part done. Practise all this with an old roll of film in the light so you can do it down pat.

The next part is the actual developing.

Developer goes in. You agitate and wait for the certain amount of time.

Developer goes out. Water goes in. Agitate, and water goes out.

Fixer goes in. Agitate, wait for certain amount of time. Fixer goes out.

Aaaaannd you're done. Screw off the light tight lid, look at your negatives for a sec, then let the negatives sit under running water for 10 minutes or so. Hang to dry

Space is not an issue when it comes to develop film. I load my tank on the toilet seat in a 2'x3' room since it has no windows. After the film is loaded into chill on my couch while developing and fixing.

labs apply presets, crop and do lots of shitty shit over the photos. self scan is the way, or by someone that knows what hes doing, not a lab.

question the average photo labs scan your film at which pixel dimensions at average? and, do they give you JPEG or TIFF files?

Odds are they will be JPEGs and <2000px on the long side. 99% of lab scans I've seen are pieces of shit and overpriced. That's why pretty much everyone scams themselves.

>>3029552
Shoot it at 400. As far as adjustment order goes, it doesn't matter. I typically try to keep my camera set to 1/125th and adjust the aperture accordingly. I almost always adjust shutter speed first and then aperture. I'm not a bokeh fag so I try to keep my aperture as small as possible. That's just me though, there's no right or wrong way so long as you end up closing correctly.

>>3029496
Seems like it could work, run a cheap test roll through it first after you fix it up. Luckily my gf has never dropped a camera of mine. Shes only accidently knocked my guitar over, snapping the neck...

So Nobody's tried Agfa Vista 100? It looks good from what I can see online...but would like to hear an actual opinion on it if possible. Also just realize I've dropped $350 on film in the past month...think I have a problem.

Am I retarted or is it fucked to get a 120 roll on a Patterson reel? Holy fucking hell I've only been using steel reels and I went to throw a roll of portra on a Paterson and I think I right dicked the roll. Is it just me? On a side note colour deving went well today otherwise.

yep, getting mf film on a paterson is hell.
Nwadays if I need to do a roll of 220 I use a paterson and load from the centre of the reel, as if it were a stainless. Soooooo much easier. (I do this because I don't have stainless 220 reels)
No reason you couldn't to it for 120 as well, and just get two rolls on the one reel into the bargain.

It's easy as fuck. Don't push the film past the little ball bearings. Instead line it up and pull it through. Once you get the lead edge past that point do the typical twisting motion to put the rest of the roll on. I find 120 easier than 35mm. Lights off to lights back on takes less than a minute.
>>
>>3029707
i have no idea what these other people are talking about Paterson tank made everything way easier and quicker...

How do I prevent my film from sticking/jamming with Patterson / Samigon reels? I keep my reels very clean and just to make sure ordered a brand new one and had the same issue.

I shoot HP5+ and can feed the reel on for about 60 - 75% of the roll but then it begins to stick and jam resulting in either an entire lost roll or losing a bunch of shots.

I've tried techniques such as scrubbing the reels with hot water and heating them up a bit with a hairdryer before trying to feed it on but have failed every time.

When I first got my reels I was shooting Kentmere and had no issues feeding it on but now even kentmere gives me issue on the old reels and the brand new one.

Any tips would be great, I'm not switching to stainless steel because I'm already broke as it is.
>>
>>3029752
The very start of the film likely has a bend in it. It needs to be perfectly straight otherwise it'll stop loading near the end of the roll.

Happens to me all the time. Just keep a level head and do it again until it works. Make sure the start of the film is nicely rounded
>>
>>3029752
do you have a two reel tank? make sure you keep the correct two pieces of the reels together, if you swap them around the reels can be the wrong width. I fucked up a roll of 35 and a roll of 120 before I realized the reels weren't identical to each other
>>
>>3029759
I always round the film off on the ends.

Would having the natural bend of the film be too much?
>>
>>3029762
I do have a two reel tank but it happened on a brand new samigon reel that I got today also.
>>
>>3029763
Rounding off does nothing for a Paterson reel. I've always left mine with hard corners, and have never had a problem. I also dry my reels for a couple of days after use, so they're bone dry when stored. That may change things.
>>
>>3029707
Ahhh that makes sense pull through then just wind on the last little peice. I'm gonna give it another go tomorrow.
>>
>>3029768
Mine are always as dry as possible
>>
>>3029763
It depends. If you try loading the film emulsion side inwards and it doesn't load, try loading it with the emulsion side facing outwards and see if that helps.

90% of the time that works for me

>>
>>3029687
like >>3029707 said, it's easy.

Get yourself some kaiser or AP reels with the tabs if you're really having trouble. Even if you can't autofeed it, you can still push the film onto the reel gently with more success than 135.
>>
>>3029646
How hard? You got yourself a Soviet camera, nigger. These things appear sturdy but can die on you at any time without warning. Open the back and fire the shutter several times at all speeds to see if it works at least for starters. Then google up the operating manual and read it through. Then google up how to calibrate the rangefinder because chances are you have to do that to get correct focus. Then google up sunny 16 to know how to expose at least in daylight conditions, or carry your digishitter along to meter with something.

The best film for your camera is the cheapest film you can find in your area until you know what you're doing, or until your FED breaks and you toss it in a junk pile wondering whatever you were thinking.

Christ, people. Soviet cameras are meme cameras. They are not reliable. They are not half as sturdy as they were built to appear. Usually the only damn thing worth anything on them is the lens. They're about the last thing any first-timer to film should get.

As I said, the key is to PULL the film through in the beginning. After that it should be smooth sailing. I don't even understand what could go wrong after that point. Your reels are completely dry, right?

My only other suggestion is to use your thumbs to lightly grip the film as you twist and turn the reel back and forth.

I honestly can't think of another thing you could be doing incorrectly. its definitely not the reel's fault, as me and others have zero problems loading film on the same exact reel. They're simple machines and it comes down to user error.

Another 400H.

When the film gets stuck, you just give the reel a few light slaps on the side with the flat of your hand.
Don't worry, you won't fuck the film or the reel, but you will unstick the film and be able to spool it on.

May have to repeated several times throughout the loading process, as your reels get older.

I think it's fairly understandable, since people have to wait until they develop their film and then usually dump it in the thread all at once.

I shoot ~1 roll of B&W a week, usually develop every sunday night and usually post my favorite photos from the roll that night as well. So for the rest of the week I have nothing else I want to post, but naturally I still want to contribute to discussion. I'd imagine others have similar habits

Yo kurwa, come back dude. I'm getting my adapter ring tomorrow. At least one of the two arrived. I'm hoping it's the nice one from Portugal so I can use the 80mm on the Nikon FE. Gotta' finish the 800 Fuji reel in it, though.
>>
>>3030564
given uv focuses further than infinity, a 80mm will have to be stopped down lots to catch stuff in its shallowish dof. unless you wanna macro flowers to have slightly different boring patterns appear. do portraits. uv portraits look stellar, like nothing else. If you need to reach me I'm over on the pee discord, for future reference.
>>
Anyone tried using anamorphic lenses on 35mm film? Could be a neat way of getting that 'panoramic' look without having to sacrifice shots per roll
>>
>>3030572
What is discord? You have any examples of portraits you'd be willing to post? I'm painfully eager.

If it's the 43-46mm ring that arrived, I might just skip straight to the LF, since X-ray is cheap and I have the dark room booked later this week. Only tricky part will be fitting it on a shutter, because I don't have any boards with a threaded hole for 39x0.75, and I don't have an appropriate flange anyways. I'm pretty sure the internal diameter of a copal 1 lens /is/ 39x0.75.

>>3030588

Isn't "panoramic" defined by the ratio?
>>
>>3030590
Yeah probably. Anamorphic shots are usually expanded to 2.39:1 ratio in post-production which us usually defined as widescreen or panoramic format

Interesting concept

Shot this on industrial 400 back in September. I'm trying to get back into taking photos and wanna start developing my own stuff.
>>
My film and dev shit is all here and I can finally go out and shoot my first roll, but I'm curious how long you should keep unshot film loaded in the camera. I don't go out shooting a lot so it might take me a couple weeks to finish a roll, and we're just coming out of summer here in Aus so it's starting to simmer down but it still gets pretty hot every now and again. Will this be a problem?
>>
>>3030750
You won't have any issues over a couple weeks.
>>
>>3030750
As long as the casing is sealed properly, you shouldn't have any problems keeping film in there for months.
>>
>>3029646
well if you dont use such a shit fucking camera it's gonna be a lot easier to transition

also wtf, shooting film is easy as fuck, why do you need a support group?
>>
>>3030590
The newest online chat client flavour, /p/'s irc has been mostly phased out with various private facebook groups and a discord server: https://discord.gg/WHRHSbc It's convenient for anonymous offline keeping in contact w/o having to use emails.

Are you confident enough to nail focus with sufficient shutterspeed for a portrait subject? Do an exposure comp. testroll first, imo, walk before you run etc.

>>3030750
You're right to think of that factor, but unless you're using ilford pan F (supposedly doesnt like sitting undeveloped) or something loke delta3200 with the camera left on a sunny windowsill (fast films degrade quicker) for three months, you shouldn't ever see any difference. Have fun with your first roll and try not to be too stingy/reserved - this is when you're learning how film behaves, after all. You're likely to forget what you did/how you shot and won't be able to draw conclusions for future rolls, if you put developing off too long.
>>
>>3030770
why do you use a trip when you have yet to produce an image that doesn't look like a 200 year old accident?

Yeah it's strange, it's not consistent from roll to roll. Battery related maybe...not enough strength in the take up spool. Or maybe the gears are just out of line. Either way I quite liked the effect on two otherwise boring shots. The way the buildings sort of twist together to form one thing.

You can generally find a Minolta for slightly cheaper than that on Ebay but I guess it's worth it for the lenses.

By the way, speaking on Minolta, I just found out my father has a Dynax 404si around the house and he pretty much just inherited it to me since he also became a digipleb and gives it no use. Is this camera any good? It's bundled in an old bag with two lenses, an AF-28-80 and a 70-210.

Plastic AF Meneltas are remorseless trash.
If it works, of course it is capable of some excellent photos, I'm sure.
However, they have a number of issues that put them at the bottom of the pile.
>they almost never work
>because they're made of shitty plastic, when the lenses dry out and get stiff, the tiny motor for the screwdriver AF runs out of puff, kills camera/battery
>they all take retarded lithiums
>they often lack normal PASM exposure modes
>they rely on LCDs and pushbuttons and menudiving to change settings, rather than dials or scroll wheels
>in the real world, there are no lenses except trashy consumer zooms
If you have to resort to ebay to find a basic 50mm for your camera, that's the surest sign that it's consumer tier fucking garbage.
>and yes, that includes you AF pentax
The Canon EOS range are the only plastic AF SLR's I would recommend in 2017.
The all-electric lense mount has stood the test of time, and practically every EOS SLR you will find is fully featured, and simple and intuitive to use.

I develop myself, I scan 120 on a V550 but I scan 35mm on a Plustek 7400. The flatbed gives much worse results for 35mm, if you're only doing 35mm I would pick a dedicated scanner like the Plustek over a flatbed. I really, really tried several times to nigger rig a DSLR scanning rig and it was just absolutely not worth the effort but you're welcome to try it.

Agfa vista 100 is rebranded Fuji, I think it's superia. I'm sure if you google you can find out which, then look that up. I'm sure you'll find some comments on it, it's been around long enough.

I've used it a bit over the last 3 or years, maybe around 200 rolls. Haven't had very much developed but a few strays have popped up. No immediate complaints, though only done basic scans of each frame to act as a contact sheets of sorts. Definatly reminds me more of Fuji low end neg, more muted colours & possibly less sharp, not so sure of that yet though.

It's the only realistic choice for me at the moment, so I'm hoping as I gradually process my stuff I'm not disappointed.

developing your own film is relatively easy. If you're in New York, Adorama ships cheap. Start with black and white film, which is very forgiving, and work your way up to color. It's vitally important to get a daylight tank.

C41 is not so hard; the thing of most importance is to keep the temperature consistent. Fortunately they make these complicated contraptions called "thermometers"...

depends on the kind of scanner you use. An Epson V370 is cheap as fuck and produces acceptable results, but naturally, the more you spend the better the end result. Of course you also have to make sure your negatives are cleaned when you scan them.

Snapshit related. You can see the result of not properly cleaning scanning surface in the little white dust particles on the image. Sometimes it can get far worse.

The 1+4 dilution is for film. The 1+9 dilution is for paper.

Use the 1+4 of if you're developing film. 100ml of fixer, 400ml of water.

Don't dump the fixer when you've used it as it can be re-used for quite awhile.

Dude, I would barely call that dusty at all.
If you're going to scan a whole roll, or god forbid a dozen of them, sperging out cleaning your negs more than a quick once over wipe is a total waste of your time.
Consider that of your 36, there are probably only going to be 10, 15 tops that you would want to edit to a presentation standard, that's about 30 seconds of work with a healing brush to fix per frame, whereas peering into every scanner surface every frame to eliminate all visible contaminants, and still having to go ahead and select the healing tool and click it a few times for the bits you missed? That shit will shorten your life.
Perfect neg cleaning is for printing only.

I've got strange problems with a sort of bleeding coming from my sprocket holes. It seems to happen when shooting in very low light, but doesn't effect every frame uniformly so I'm thinking dev issues rather than light leaks in my camera. Any ideas?

But here you go. Some Lomography Orca 100 shot in my very first camera; a Kodak Instamatic 92.
The spots are in almost every frame so I guess they're a fault in the lens. I don't mind them.

You would have overpayed with $140 for the SRT-101, which is the oldest of the SRT line. SRT-200 was a budget model of its day, but has all the features you need. The f/2 45mm is a great lens, the zoom is probably crap but you paid essentially nothing for it anyway. You can get the essentials for home developing for less than $100, the scanner is the only expensive thing remaining that you will need. Although many libraries and universities have film scanners that can be booked for free. I don't recommend getting a dedicated scanner right off the bat, a flat top like Epson V550 is fine for the job. Even $100 flat tops typically can scan 35mm film, but the results aren't that stellar. Whatever gets you started.
>>

i feel like I have two starter models of two different types of photography now. I guess I just wanted something better. but I guess Ill learn all film photography on this. Thanks for the input. I assumed the 200 wasnt as great tier, I went and looked at flickr groups between the two different lens (45mm on the 200 and 58 1.7 on the 101) and the 58mm photos overall looked miles better, or is that just niche flickr group

Tossing up which format to go for.
Technically I'd prefer the extra shots of 6x45 and the smaller bodies, but if that medium format look you get is significantly better in 6x7/6x9 then I might go for that.

Whilst that is an excellent camera and I highly recommend it, 60mm and f/4 on 645 won't knock you out with it's shallow depth of field. At all. It's a street/landscape/travel camera, not for portraiture.
For comparison, here's a shot wide open with the 75/3.5 lensed version of that very cam.
With good technique, and post processing, you will still get visible subject separation even at medium distances and middle apertures, but it's nothing to compare to 80/2.8 on 6x6, let alone anything longer or on a bigger format.

Film pulled over the sensor? I'm not following, could you post a picture that shows clearly what you mean.

>>it may be the only film camera you ever need.
>you just said it was garbage
No, menelta is correct.
It's garbage with reference to other cameras available with a similar prevalence and cost. That however doesn't mean that it can't hold a lense in front of a piece of film, give you a means to focus it, and expose it for an amount of time of your choosing, which is all anyone really needs a camera to do.
The 45mm is absolutely fine, trust me. Many professionals shoot their entire careers with "worse" lenses.
The "limitations" of the menelta are that it's huge, weighs a tonne, has an awful viewfinder, has a limited metering range, only mounts fucking menelta lenses, has a janky zenit-tier cloth shutter.

also

why am I spending over $200 to get started developing film for a shit lens when I could simply get a canon 50mm 1.4 for $250 and shoot with that and get very similiar results, just not develop film

No I mean work without any electronics.

Um in film cameras the film is the sensor. Do you mean the shutter curtain?

Where do you live? You shouldn't be spending $200 to get started developing. It should be closer to $100.

>>3033055
If you have one available to you for a good price, sure.

I intend to use it mainly for street architecture based photography, so a super shallow DOF isn't entirely necessary in that regard. I just want something that gives more depth that MF is known for.
Pic related was shot on a GS645S, similar to what I shoot and what I'm after.

Holy shit I just read back over my post and I worded that horribly. I was very tired.
Okay basically there's the plate that pushes the film against the shutter curtain bit I guess, the light leak is coming from the bottom of the plate.
I've taped the outside of it and underneath the camera on the outside. The problem with this is that the tape comes off, and additionally to wind back the film it blocks the release button. Either way I end up with light leaks.
If I put it on the inside of the camera it catches on the film and mangles it.
>>
>>3033318
You do realize that the image is projected upside down on the film? So if your light leak shows on the bottom of the photo, you have to tape the upper part of the door.

I am mentally retarded.
>>

Yeah, that cost sounds about right for developing stuff and scanner
