The lens is focused on her tits, not on her face. Relatively bad mistake.

I think the pose is overall pretty good, as is her hair makeup and clothing.

In a perfect shot, there would be more light on her face but then you need a dedicated light for shooting. Looks like you just used a lamp that was already next to the bed.

Actually, no lamp or artificial lighting of any kind. Just natural light from the window to the right.

She had white walls which helped the cause.

this one looks better than the other one, her face looks better as well because you shot her from higher up here
>>
>>3028473
its as if you lit, shot, and edited this specifically to highlight all of her worst facial features and one of the worst makeup jobs I think I have ever seen.
I find this photo intimidating. I opened it in a new tab and pressed f11 for full screen and I had a physical response. Literally repulsed, I am still centimeteres too far away to type this naturally. Its the combination of the low perspective, it being so intimately close, if you look at her chest and hands it feels playful and embracing, but look up and you just see those harsh angles, almost blocky color sections, scary unrelatable facial expression and you get zinged and take a step back, which is among the things you can do better next time.

>you are too close to her, use a less wide focal length
but wouldnt that mess with her face aesthetics? I'm already at 50mm, anything lower than that should cause distortion, rite?

>>3029693
>its as if you lit, shot, and edited this specifically to highlight all of her worst facial features and one of the worst makeup jobs
In my defense I didn't configure the lights for this shot, I'm doing a shitty portrait course and the teacher changed the light settings for every "model", also in her defense and my defense she wasn't a model and didn't prepare for a shooting session, she was just one of the persons that happened to be there and was willing to collaborate at the moment of the shooting.
>but look up and you just see those harsh angles, almost blocky color sections, scary unrelatable facial expression and you get zinged and take a step back, which is among the things you can do better next time.
What would have you done to make this better? honest question

her nose looks like its about to burst through the goddamn screen. When he says less wide he means longer focal length which will remove distortion and "flatten her face"

>When he says less wide he means longer focal length which will remove distortion and "flatten her face"
I know what he means, what i'm trying to say is that I'm already at my maximum allowed focal length with this lens and I cannot do much about it, I could be farther away from her but I couldn't do it in the shot because there were a shitload of people trying to take pictures of her so I did the best I could with what I had
Here is a different image, that I could take from a further distance, criticism continues to be welcomed

Is there anything more to taking portraits than being able to get the eyes in focus, while making everything else bokeh'ed the fuck out, and hoping that the subject happens to have a natural looking expression/pose at the moment u press dat shutter?

>but wouldnt that mess with her face aesthetics? I'm already at 50mm, anything lower than that should cause distortion, rite?

no, you should've gone to let's say 85 or 100mm and taken the shot from a few steps back
>>
>>3031171
you are making it sound easy like that. also your model needs to be interesting looking or hot
>>
>>3031171

Talk to them. You're not gonna get a natural reaction from someone who's awkwardly standing there waiting for you to say "ok i'm done"

Carry a conversation while you're shooting, particularly about a subject they're passionate about and you'll start to see genuine reactions.

Same can apply for different emotions, just carry a convo based on the tone you want to portray
>>
>>3031197

Samefag, obviously this applies if it's someone you know or if you're up to talking to a stranger before a shot.

If you're doing candid shots, you kinda have to watch the person and follow their patterns until you get them doing something genuine

That does look really good. I've noticed when I take pictures I try (I guess) to make everyone look nice and soft, not sure why I do this, but it pleases my eyes after I take the picture.

Maybe I should avoid softness, any thoughts?

I suppose it's down to the individual photographers preferences. I shoot in monochrome and try to get the sharpest focus on the subjects face with a low depth of field to make the portrait intimate. It's all about artistic preferences.

We don't need to see 1.4mb of huge blurry pixels. Scale it down, it looks better.

That said, I kinda like it but highlights are grey and it's all blurry. It also feels a bit tight but that might be just me.

i did a portrait shoot for a student union thingie, good for practicing on a sort of fast paced, portraits on a conveyor belt kind of gig..

and i noticed several times that scarves didnt sit properly, jackets were weirdly draped etc.. and i wonder if anyone have any tips on how to balancing keeping a fast pace, keeping the subjects comfortable, and making sure their clothes sit properly etc..

I was really hestitant to correct those things because that might make them self conscious and getting their expression good again would take forever.. Is that just me overthinking stuff? should i just have some go to distraction to use after correcting them?
do you guys have any tips for this?

What the fuck is this, a Shrek impersonator thread? Most of these women are so ugly that even the most gifted photoshop wizard would hesitate to challenge accepted.

Idgaf how much you know about photography or how good your gear is, taking pictures of fugly ass swamp banshees and undead cromagnon anorexia wights doesn't make good photography, no matter the lighting or the comp.

Find human females with current DNA and at least a semblance of physical symmetry and aesthetic pleasantness for fucks sake.

always try to have them do something interesting with their hands. we focus so much on what the face is doing that we forget about the hands. try to get into the habit of thinking of the hand posing as the same importance as the head.

you can make an export preset for /p/ so that you don't have to fiddle with setting it every time to just make it 1000px on the long side and that'll automatically size it down to less than 1mb for you as well

It is always better than too much. When you first start it out, the siren song of "OH MY GOD LOOK WHAT I CAN DO TO THIS PHOTO I COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED IT" is very hard to resist. You'll look back at the photos you made in this period with bittersweet regret, however.

If you seriously want her to get hired then square close crop on the face and a BW conversion, she really doesn't need acres of blown out space and flare around her, and the skintones look rancid. Plus you need to lighten her face and dehaze the whole thing...or just reshoot, you've made her jaw look massive.

Seriously, there's no room for artistry on this one.

The angles is not correct. From that angle you can't really see her face. Should've moved a bit to the right making a circumference around her.

You want to see her seeing something outside of the frame to the right, not to a random spot.

Also she doesn't look comfortable with that pose; look at her right hand and how high her leg is.
>>
>>3035415
It looks like you messed up the focus and tried to work that out by highlighting the eyes with photoshop. Too much highlight leaves a weird texture on the image. Since the picture is not scaled it's not hard to notice.

I don't shoot portraits (I've always been more interested in landscapes) but I occasionally take pictures of friends when we're out and about. Are there any basic things to look out for when shooting portraits/group shots that might differ from landscape?

Whenever I look at my pictures with people in them they always look like landscape photographs with people in the way rather than pictures of people with nice scenery.

I know there's a SQT but it seemed more relevant here.

are random street portraits of "ugly" people also allowed in this thread or should I post them in the recent pic thread?

Thanks. I know that sounds a little obvious, but I think I try too much to add "context" to my shots. Rather than focusing on the people I try and find a balance.

Well, it's nice to know I'm unknowingly doing something right.

I took a picture of a friend with his gf outside a church near where I live and did one with bokeh and one without. I thought the one with the church in focus was much nicer, but everybody on FB described the bokeh one as "Ooooo very arty". I wanted to kill myself.

I think the problem is with the model desu

not such a great facial expression, a more serious look suited him better

her glasses are wrong, why are her eyes at the very top of the glasses when her head is level, doesn't make sense
I do realise this is a critique of her eyeglasses, but maybe next time make her lose them

we don't need to see her shoes, zoom/crop tighter on her above the waist

I recently invested in a set of 500w strobes and have been playing around with them. Any feedback is appreciated.

the problem is that you put her in the direct center, which isn't usually the best composition, also all the light spots coming through the leaves are distracting along with the branches on the top right coming out of her head

Question: how do you guys get to take pics of girls like this? Do you advertise yourselves as photographers somewhere and they approach you, or do you just ask random girls/friends to take pictures of them?
>>
>>3055985
ask friends. girls love showing off how cute they look
>>
How many pics do you usually take for a shoot? How long does a shoot usually last?

What do you do with your photos? How do you monetise them?

Would appreciate if a few different people can respond.

Can you sincerely not tell the difference between your photo and all the rest in this thread? For example, the fact that yours isn't in focus at all? Or the fact that it looks like it was taken with a potato?

You're submitting it to a place it doesn't really belong. Imagine if you just picked up a violin for the first time, made some sounds with it and submitted the recording to a musician's forum. That's what you've just done.

Resize before you post.

I love the makeup and the clothes and the hair. Her facial expression is good. Get her to turn a little bit more towards the camera.

I think it would be better if it weren't so grainy. I guess that was intentional though? Everyone has their own style but I don't like it.
>>
>>3059110
Do you think the colours are ok like this? Do you think the exposure is ok like this? In other words, was the orangeness and the underexposure intentional?
