Most ring lights relatively suck for photography because they're not the "powerful strobe" type of light that is usually more useful for photography.

If you do have a powerful diffuse light source in ring shape, it can be used for a lot of shots, same as with most such lights.

Ringlights have a place, but only for fairly specific shots or looks that you are actively trying to go for. They produce an odd look because the light is directly on the subject, as if the viewer is the source, and causes a lack of shadows that you are accustomed to seeing when you look at a subject.

It's pretty much down to taste, but I'd say that for video it just looks plain weird.
