instagram is a good tool to get yourself known so you can make actual money off of photography doing photoshoots that you like and posting your creativity on the web for other people who appreciate it to hit you up for a shoot. unless you just take snapshits all the time for fun that you're afraid won't get any likes so you refrain from posting them anywhere other than an anonymous image board in fear of harsh criticism

I made a Whatsapp group with one other person and kicked the other out. Via web whatsapp I send pictures in that chat and only I receive the pictures. I then just download them on my phone. Really easy and fast once you've set it up.

I know this is a stupid question....

I'm thinking of making an instagram. No reason other than I will be traveling alone, and long term pretty soon, and knowing that people are looking at my pictures will keep me from feeling lonely.

Can anyone explain how this social media stuff works?
I've never used snapchat or any of that other stuff either.
Do I just post photos and follow people?
Am I expected to leave comments and likes and such?
Is it rude if I don't follow back someone that follows me?

Yes.

Snapchat is garbage in every conceivable way unless you need to entertain some kids with wacky face filters.

Yes. You don't even have to follow people, but you might find that you'll want to, since there are a ton of great photographers on IG.

Yes and no. If you actually like a photo, fuckin' comment on it and say so. That's just good manners. No one likes the sycophant who comments on every single photo someone posts just to get noticed, though.

Depends on if you know the person. You know how every game is really just a nested series of metagames? Well, instagram's metagame is keeping a high follower-to-following ratio. All of the big accounts have a fraction of following to all of their followers. It is ultimately meaningless and just makes you look like a dickhead if you try to exploit the system, however. The metagame for the follower-to-following ratio is engagement rate, which is how many of your followers actually like and comment on your photos.

Anon I've looked through your stuff and I was wondering if you have any specific preset or so that you use to get that comfy feely feel in some of your (urban) pics. They look a bit blue tinted and a tad dark, besides being sharp (I think). Sort of like in the second pic of the second row in that preview you posted, or most train station pics you have
