This Alex Soth AMA has tons of gems.

Couple snippets:
>A lot of people bite off more than they can chew. Rather than doing a story of poverty in the south, one might do a story on woman who loses her job in Alabama. That sort of thing. Otherwise the project gets bigger and bigger in one's head and becomes impossible to tackle. (though in the end it might end up being about poverty in the South).
>Amazing pictures are happening all of the time. They are so omnipresent that it feels crazy to chase after them all. I guess that is why I limit myself to projects. I can focus my energy and attention to those pictures that serve the purpose of the project.
I personally disagree with this one, but definitely understand what he means. Right now always having a camera on me is working really well.vi can see that changing eventually though.

He speaks such a clear English. As a non-native I can understand every single word he says. Marvelous.

the title and ericks explanations on the quotes are super dumb and trite, but the actual pics and excerpts taken right from the book make up for it.

I know 10,000 is supposed to imply a long, arduous, time-consuming experience over years and decades, but I shot almost 4,000 photographs just at the final NFL game of the season. So maybe not so relevant in the digital era.

>10,000
it implies the actual photos and the very process of editing, darkroom hours, prints and what not. if you take that number and the full work, experimentation and study it involves, yeah, you come out of it being pretty fucking decent.
Met Soth last year, he's a really nice guy, and was happy to answer any questions I had. He told me he also prepared a document where he asked all the Magnum photographers advice for young photographers. Here it is

If you started with digital, make that 300,000.

What if I'm an-cap and almost shoot film exclusively
>>3022674
I wouldn't expect internal consistency from an an-cap, so no surprises there.

of course neo-liberals would be the ones to fall for the quote, heh

Well it's not like it's just saying that you'll magically git gud at you 10,001 photograph. You can still suck, it's just that you (probably) won't suck as much as your first 10,000.
