I mean, that's /thread, right?
What's STF?
>>3018247
Just read up on it, looks like it stands for "Smooth Transition Focus" and it's related to the bokeh, making them very smooth. It looks like it uses a sort of duel aperture system to smooth the bokeh, but Im not sure. Pic related is an old minolta lens with the STF system on it

are you retartded? soft focus isnt apd. nikon lens is 22 years old with outdated af system.
>>3018186
>DC != STF
>Soft focus != STF
The STF lenses have the much more neutral and smoother bokeh than either of those. The DC Nikkor has some adjustment to the bokeh quality, but it really isn't on the same level as the STF lens.
Soft focus lens also blurs the subject in focus so it isn't really usable for critical portrait work.

>>3018306
this, STF is basically a physical gaussian blur. it makes individual bokeh balls nearly indistinguishable
>>3018288

No, can I buy a film camera to use this on? It'd be perfect.

Get a Minolta SLR and the old Minolta STF lens.
>>3018253
>It looks like it uses a sort of duel aperture system to smooth the bokeh, but Im not sure.
From what I understand it has a lens element with some darker areas. - like a gradual neutral density filter but with a very specific shape.
I wonder what the effect is on transmission.
At f/2.8 it's already quite a slow prime.
>>3018306
>makes a claim
>posts a link that immediately contradicts that claim
>>3018322
if youd maybe take a look at OPs image it says - T5.6
>>3018320
Does that have IS?
t/5.6
Pentaxfag here.
You idiots can't seem to realize that STF is about an optical formula specifically designed to block light, this is why the OOF CoC looks like a circular graduated nd filter. Of course, it has a high T-stop value, it has to be for this special element only.
The lens is a specialty lens for very special portrait situations. It can make a large DoF with a super sharp subject while the background and foreground are as much out of focus as it would be on a normal lens wide open.
For some people it looks cool, other think it looks unnatural and fake, me amongst them. But the lens is spot on, unlike the weather sealing or ergonomics, or its main user base.
>>3018442
It does look weird and fake, especially with the new iPhone portrait mode. It makes me realize that I actually don't mind the patchy "orby" regular bokeh, cause I'm so used to people "faking" a shallow DoF look, and this new lens is $2000 to get that fake look organically.
>>3018442
>But the lens is spot on
That's because it's a Minolta lens. ;)

>What's STF?
It's a neutral density filter inside the lense that is clear in the centre and gets darker towards the edges. It means that all of your bokeh balls gently fade out from the centre, rather than having hard edges.
>>3018305
>>3018306
No, they're not functionally identical, however they are special effect portrait lenses that have been available for about 30 years with autofocus and that are still 2 and 3 stops faster than this Sone-meme.

WHY THE THE FUCK YOU GOOKS DON"T MADE 24-70 2.8 AN FUCKING OSS
WHY
GIVEN IT'S LITERALLY THE ONLY FEATURE ALL A7S VIDEO SHOOTERS FUCKING NEED FROM EMOUNT LENSES
WHYYYYY
>>3018171
Ignorants will be scared away by that T-stop, but that difference between F and T is a clean 2 stops. This is really high quality.
That's the highest apodization strength we have to this date.
The old Minolta lens was somewhere between 1-2 stops. This new lens exceeds that.
The Fuji lens is limited to just 1 stop.
>>3018522
If you think about it in pricing context, this lens is one hell of a bargain.
This is a 100mm Full Frame portrait lens with 2 stop apodization at 1500 USD.
Guess what Fujifilm is asking for a 56mm Crop lens with half as strong apodization.....Bingo, they ask the same 1500 USD.
This is one hell of a fucking bargain.
>>3018517
This might be a stupid question, but will this somehow affect the vignetting? Seems like it would
>>3018539
That's like one extra stop of gimmick for the same amount of money! Wow!
>>3018548
If you can call higher quality bokeh a gimmick, sure. This lens is not for people from faggot land.
>>3018539
F1.2 (1.8) v F2.8 makes it less of a clear win for the Sony.
>>3018546
I has 0 effect on vignetting, and 0 effect on the area within depth of field.
It will only smoothen the areas that are out of focus. So you keep the typical strong defocused look from a F1,4 aperture lens, but your entire subject will be in focus due to the F-stop.
>>3018552
That isn't actually relevant for a STF lens. You will want to use F2,8 or F4 for this kind of lens to have your entire subject in focus.
This is a specialty tool which requires a different mindset.
>>3018556
>your entire subject will be in focus due to the F-stop.
From my understanding this will have the depth of field of a 2.8, but have the light transmission of a 5.6. Is that right?
>>3018561
Yes the Transmission is the sacrifice, but the gain is special type of defocusing that far exceeds that of large apertures.
This using this technique, you can in theory get smaller and lighter Prime lenses that has as strong defocusing as F1,4 lenses, but without taking up the same size and weight.
>>3018561
Wide open, yes. But stopped down the DoF is wider but the OOF parts stay relatively the same as wide open. Unlike with a normal lens where stopping down, you get a wider DoF by the price of losing the bokeh. And light, of course.
With this lens, you only lose the light but not the bokeh while getting the wide DoF.
It also has reduced Cat-eye bokeh.

So it's a lensbaby velvet 56 with auto focus and 44 more millimeters?
>>3018613
Not quite. The Lensbaby Velvet is a soft focus lens, not a smooth trans focus lens. Not the same thing but also specialty lens for a different kind of aesthetic. IMO soft focus lens have better more natural dreamy images than STF.
>>3018556
>So you keep the typical strong defocused look from a F1,4 aperture lens,
Except that when you take your qt model to the field with the softly diffused afternoon light, you're shooting 1/30 @ 1600 and waiting on some slow af AF and getting a lagged 20fps through your meme-tronic viewfinder as it struggles to cope with your idiocy.
Whereas if you'd bought a camera from a camera brand, you'd be shooting f/1.4 (or f/1.2), 1/125 @ 400 iso and getting sharp images, and you'd be able to see what your model was doing at all times.

And what you didn't mention is that the sony stf is variable from zero to full on the sony, with the t value adjusting accordingly.
On the fuji you're permanently stuck with an f1.2 lens with t1.7, oh and the lens doesn't really get sharp anywhere until the wrong side of f4.
And its image circle covers a quarter the area.
Wtf fuji, sort your shit out.
>>3018770

It might be the webmaster who misunderstood the lens and wrote F5,6 instead of T5,6.
T5,6 is indeed F2,8 in this case.
