I can't tell if you just snuck a camera into a club and took pics of without their permission or if someone hired you for an event with a turnout of 30 ppl

good if you're getting paid. I met the guy who runs the majority of the florida club scene and he wanted to bring me in on normal club nights because I had an interest in shooting concerts for him (my normal shit)

he said he'd give me $45 for 3 hrs of shooting, twice a week. I said yes instinctively but now I'm at no because it would systematically ruin the small amount of free time I have left, but he hasn't hit me up since.

I don't drink and I hate clubs when I'm not with groups.
>>
>>3016613
From personal experience, the best way to photograph in the dark is to use zone focusing.

Set shutter to sync speed, aperture to f8~16, zone focus to desired distance = MAXIMUM FREEDOM. The wider angle lens the better.

Just point and shoot. No dicking around with unreliable AF in the dark with shitty AF assist light.

I think they came out nice. I've never shot in a nightclub, must've been fun. Did you have some deal with the owners or something?
>>
>>3016618
That's a good shot. Accidentally all the elements of good composition and photo.
>>
>>3016613
ciao
>>
>>3016626
>Set shutter to sync speed, aperture to f8~16
Your instructions lead to even darker surrounding light where just the people in the front get lit by only the flash.

OP, these shots are pretty harsh, showing a strong contrast. This can be encountered although the club is really dark. AF should be improved by an external flash gun, I suppose the uploaded shots were still shot using the popup flash?
Your shots need more available light, so the flash can be reduced, which will lead to more balanced light between foreground and background.
I feel like dof could be less, hence try if the apertures 3.5 to 4 meet your taste. If you have other lenses too try f/2.8.
Also increase the iso speed to at least 640, maybe even 800 or 1000. Set the shutter to 1/30, if there's a lot motion blur set 1/50. Post results
>>
>>3016716
>F2.8

Get the fuck out right now or I'll do some bad shit.
>>
Op, in general i'll suggest you to try having anything in a backgroud, some lights preferrably and you may search for colorcast so your shots would differ from point-and-shoot.

>>3016613
>>3016616
>>3016618
crop in post-edit, too much space

for overall, your colors are nice, you just need more practice in composition. about your shutterspeed and aperture, If it's work for you, it's ok. the ISO is low, you can put it at 1600, your d7000 will handle this very well, them you can use a faster shutter speed and a more deep background.

about couples kissing. It's a night club, and some people were cheating, or don't want to be photographed kissing because of reasons. You can get in trouble easily, get btfo by some guy or screeched by some girl that later can accuse you to be somehow a 'rapist'. I already saw both cases of this shit happen. so watch out with this, and just do it to your friends.
>>
>>3016708
Heyyy ciao
>>
>>3016766
Idgaf about kisses, I like them, and people do as well.
People in these kissed many times during the night so I knew they were a couple and not accasional lovers.

>Get the fuck out right now or I'll do some bad shit.
Then better do some bad shit you ignorant pseudo ceiling pisser. It's not like I didn't write OP should do as he pleases. Also OP shoots wide angle on a crop body. Dof will still be quite large
And now fuck off.
>>
Your flash doesn't have an IR assist light?
>>
>>3016626
I don't do nightclubs, but a wedding dancefloor is often very similar.
However, I do quite the opposite from this advice:
* Set shutterspeed to whatever I want, usually like 1/30th or 1/60th.
* Set aperture to f/2 or f/2.8 or something (sometimes f/4).
* Set ISO to 1600 - 3200-ish
* Handhold flash, no diffuser bullshit, doesn't help, sometimes a stofen if I want multiple people.
* Either use TTL or just set flash power to 1/16th (normally OK). I've noticed that TTL sometimes goes completely haywire when they have strobe lights, so manual flash is normally a safe bet.

Depending on the lighting, this gets you some kind of environment light. The mild flash power ensures you can fire of at least a burst of 5 or so without having to recycle.
Never too worried about focus, if it's problematic I'll go to f/4 or smaller.

Advantage is that with TTL I can use rear curtain, but for 1/60th that's not really needed. Rear curtain comes into play if you'd do 1/15th or slower.
>>
>>3016766
How would you crop >>3016616 huh? Would you cut out the hand or the top-right face?
>>
>>3016787
it's a nightclub, you don't know nothing.

>>3016798
would crop the free space at the left side. the 4:3 ratio in this photo didn't work, so I would try others ratio as well. Nowadays square ratios 1:1 are very well welcomed because of Instagram
>>
>>3016608
Great
>>3016610
Pretty good, would benefit from more subject distance.
>>3016613
Don't do nightclub photos from the waist. Keep it eye level or above your head.
>>3016614
that's just bad, get a subject that isn't the back of some ugly girl.
>>3016615
good, but still, watch out for the ceiling.
>>3016616
again ceiling. This would've been better with higher shutter speed.
>>3016618
good

Your processing is great. How tall are you? If you're tall (+6 feet / 183cm) stop holding the camera at your chest.

Another tip: Spend all your time at your widest angle and crop in post. Step back and try to keep peoples faces in the top of the frame, eliminating the ceiling problem.
>>
>>3016793
>Also OP shoots wide angle on a crop body. Dof will still be quite large

That's such a load of bull.
Facebook are 2048 pixels wide. If you shoot 18mm on a crop at f2.8, the actual DoF is thin as fuck, I'd say it's 10cm at an appropriate subject distance.

Online calculators will tell you there's a huge DoF, but it's bullshit.
>>
>>3016716
Maybe. My personal preference is for that high contrast subject-background separation, so not seeing much of the background sits well with me.

Another thing I did during Halloween was to shoot with my Pentax Q-S1, which has a small 1/1.7" sensor. This means that my 8.5mm lens at f1.9 has the equivalent DoF of a full frame 40mm lens at f8. This allows me to shoot wide open for maximum ambient light gathering and still able to zone-focus with comfort and without sacrificing shutter speed too much.

Also, I didn't mention it at all in my posts, but the assumption here is I'm letting TTL flash do all the work for me.
>>
>>3016856
Assuming that >>3016797 talks about ff you get f/1.4 or f/2.8, sometimes f/4 for aps-c. I experience equal f-numbers at 35mm ff
>>
>>3016829
Thanks for the great input. I'm 1.74m

Fuck you. I've just bought a D7000. I know what I what, and that isn't another fucking mirrorless (I've shot Panasonic all my life), and absolutely not a full frame.

The OVF is perfect for flash as the ergonomics and everything else is. I want this camera to last at least 10 years.

>>3017644
A nice friend lent me the lens (used price €60), the camera itself cost €370 used and the flash €77 new
>>
And they payed me €20 for 120 photos, 3 hours there plus 2hs pp

>>
Could you not set the shutter speed low, like 1/2 to 1 second to get background lights, then use second curtain sync flash to capture people? Would this work or not?
>>
>>3017736
The more available light the more motion blur will be captured apart from the flash. Also there's a chance that bright spots outweigh the flash lit people. By this bright lights even cut out parts of people.

I shoot with slow shutter, f/4-8 aperture, and no more than 400 iso with first curtain sync. Works really well for conveying motion, as the flash freezes whatever it hits but lets anything farther than 10-20 feet become a part of the ambient and get all blurry and groovy. Pic related, shot at a recent wedding.

sameguy, continued. Go to the club, set your iso to 400, flash power to 1/16, aperture to 4.0, and then fiddle with the shutter speed until the photo looks good. should end up around 1/4-1/20. Shake your camera while shooting for bonus motion blur.

Attached, another example from a different wedding.

I generally shoot clubs, events etc and these are alright. I do agree with the guy who said to get something in the background though (lights etc). Also don't be afraid to pump up your iso to 3200 and have your flash set at it's lowest with a flash card for a softish fill. Don't worry about noise too much, Facebook fucks photos anyway so it's perfectly fine for clubs. just apply a little noise reduction in post.

Wow, I literally shot 10 photos for a guy the other day, took about 15 minutes, plus quick post - $80. Said he felt bad he didn't have more lmao.

Experience is priceless though. you don't want to charge lots and give a middling product. I'm sure those in the photos wouldn't be concerned about contrast and what aperture the camera was set at though.
