Can we fight about focal length /p/? Specifically which would you choose if you could only have one do-it-all prime.
I shoot 28mm, but vote 35mm...

35 is comfy.
>>3015739
add another for this.
everything under 48mm FF is retarded. all objects disformed, especially faces. 50-70mm is the only FL range to go.
>>3015672
don't be a tard, get a 24-70
>>3015780
you do realize that perspective distortion depends purely on the distance to subject, not on focal length?
don't get your 35mm right in people's faces to fill the entire frame and youl'' be a-ok
50mm because I hate myself and everything else
Muh 300
Shit, I just ordered a 50mm prime.. have i dun goofed?

>>3015802
No, everyone should own one desu. Or at least shoot with one for an extended period of time...it's just that cheap and good.
I love 50mm FF, but a 40 would add that hint of wideness that you sometimes can't get with a 50, like when your back is to the wall.
>>3015672
85mm
>>3015793
meh, that's no solution. if you want to get more background it is again better on a ~50mm FF FL, because a face still look better more distant. actually tele distortion gets a problem again not before 100mm. so there is room upwards, but no downwards. so, why use a short FL and always worry about keeping enough distance to crucial objects when can use a proper FL and automatically keep a sane distance? also if you want to close-up you have to go rediculously close with a short FL. and it looks like shit. so where is the fucking benefit? there is none. and don't come up with that landscape bullshit. 50mm is absolutely fine for landscape.
also shorter FL barrel distort. and it's harder to build big apertures. also they vignette more and also CA is more a problem. They tend to be less sharp and need more glass to correct its disadvantages. ITS RETARDED. my god. shut up.

I usually stick to my 40mm equiv prime on my compact, but today I was shooting a lot of with 30mm equiv and I enjoyed it a lot. Tough choice between 40 and 28 if I only had to choose one... Thankfully pentax makes a brilliant 20-40mm limited lens (30-60mm equiv), perfect walkaround high image quality.

50-58mm on ff or 1.5 crop

>"just stay far back with a wide angle and they won't be distorted"
That's how you get photos that all suck.
Iphones with 29mm focal length create portraits that are all garbage.
Hold it far away and it's ugly, low resolution as their face fills less of the frame because the wider angle, bad background separation/blur and it will always look like a shitty phone-cam snapshot.
There's one great article where a professional sports photog tries to do a shoot solely with an iphone. The funny part was one click away was his portfolio where the actual telephoto lens photos were 100 times more interesting and dramatic than the lifeless noisy wide angle trash.

I carry a 35mm (FF of course ) with me everywhere.
I prefer longer, but I live somewhere extremely cramped and find myself being unable to use my 90mm in most situations.

I can't choose between 35 or 50. I guess 35 is the more reasonable choice but I love my nifty fifty. The 50 is what I started with so it hold that special spot to me.
85mm Not too tele that it makes working distance awkward and not too wide where you get distortion
>>3019016
>you get distortion
It only depends on the distance from your subject.
You can get distorsion with a tele
have at it
You funposters will argue anything

>>3015672
>The best focal length is the one you have with you desu.
>>3019124
To get the same framing, you have to be closer.
Distorsion appears when you are too close to your subject.
It has nothing to do with the FL.
You're welcome anon.
