That sure is an encouraging intro anon.
>>3007361
anon! that's very pretty
I'm a full noob and I'd like to take something similar, do I just turn the exposure to 30-60 seconds and a tiny aperture or how do I go about it?
or is it mainly post-processing?
>plz halp
I like that you can see the stars and the street/lights as well, it looks very comfy

Hey thanks! I do portrait/headshot photography so it's always nice to improve with hobby stuff. This is at 30 second exposure at f5, ISO 100 and 17mm focal length. If you set the aperture too low then you let in more light but you make that depth of field really shallow, and you want most of the foreground to be at least closer to focus. This one is at f2.8 to slightly blur out the roof in the foreground. Composition isn't great on this one though.
90% of the photo is out of the camera, 10% is in post. Problem is, 10% of the quality of a picture comes out of the camera, and 90% of it is fine tuning in Lightroom. The stars and colour in the sky is mostly brought out in Lightroom since this is a single exposure, but nothing crazy really. Bring down the whites and the blacks, lighten the shadows, bump up the luminosity and saturation of the blue and purple channels to get the colour in the sky and badabing badaboom

This looks really nice
>>3007318
i like the crisp colors and shaprness, very cliche photo though, not doing anything i havent seen 2000 times already
>>3007361
the sky is nice, the yellows are complete ass, go into color balance or selective color in photoshop and tint the yellows more orange, and not so bright, youll see a worlds difference. also, its very cluttered, and im not sure weather to focus on the street or the sky
>>3007366
terrible, just awful, what was your goal with this photo? just too dark and meaningless
>>3007369
pretty cute, but boring pose, and milked out tones, make it a tad warmer, and catch the doggo in motion
>>3007371
the composition is actually pretty good, do some heavy editing to get the urine colors out of there and this could be a keeper
>>3007374
>1.81mb, 6000x4000

it aint bad, the sky tones are fucking great but there is no composition to speak of,t he foreground is too dark to even have in there and nothing is in focus, keep going though, i do see what you were sorta going for and it could be cool

as bland as bland can get
>>3007426
a gh3 huh? well ill give you credit for trying to work with the wrong tool, the photo is a tad too dark and all over the place, the dudes silhouette is distracting more than it is fitting
>>3007431
wowy zowy, a wallpaper sized snapshit of NOTHING, dude, you gotta try a little harder on composition, and ease off on the urine colored filter, you seem like you could accomplish street photography, try that out and come back in a while until you get better
>>3007439
dude, this is fucking terrible, a dark blue photo of other peoples art, if youre gonna try to capture "modern ruin" or graffiti, at least get a photogenic hobo or dude with a cigar in front of it for cliche points
>>3007440
not bad, the composition is fun, and the clouds add to it quite a lot, BUT, the shadows are deep blue, and the highlights are red, a good tip is snow is supposed to be white, with cyan shadows for a realistic look, if you were going for an instagram/vsco look, it failed
>>3007442
i get what you were going for here, but it falls flat because of how dark the photo is, i basically have to squint to see the 2 people, but keep going, street photography is hard to get good at, so keep trying it m8
>>3007443
awful, just awful, i cant tell youy any good things about this photo and how you could improve it, just dont try it again, its a waste of space

again, the colors are a clusterfuck here, the snow is red, and the blue in the sky looks like a bunch of kids peed in a pool, i just LOVE green in my skies, if youre really having trouble fixing colors, use the color balance tool or selective color tool in photoshop, itll be a life saver for you especially
>>3007446
this is actually pretty good, my only complaints are the rocks are too green tinted, and the path on the right is cut off, thats it
>>3007452
i literally thought this was a metal rail i was staring at, until i realized there was the silhouette of trees and a tower on the bottom, seriously, the foreground is so damn dark why did you even add it in? if youre going to showcase some abstract heavenly object int eh sky, you need to show more of the foreground for some perspective

I especially like #2, the tight frame with the one crooked tree adds so much in terms of composition. It's a good series though. What's the theme you're going for here, loneliness? Or have you not thought about it that way?

We had a day of nice weather and my car was at the shop so I decided to go for a walk to the park thing near my house and take some snapshits.
I'm most definitely NOT a landscape guy but I'll post a few.

I guess I don't understand why? Why would this picture be better than the one you took with the fire?
>>3007796
Self importance? I'm not following anon
>>3007777
At least move the fucking box and learn to level.
>>3007797
I wouldn't expect you to be able to follow an independent thought with an image as awful, cliche and uninspired as that. Congrats on trying to make your 24 megapixel snapshit relevant.
>>3007796
Stop. Telling people not to do something because it's not what you like doesn't make your criticism legitimate.
This pic looks the way it does because it's the way it is intended to look.
And you are an idiot if you think cropping a photo to different dimensions is something you can't do in photography just because it doesn't suit your tastes.
Self importance seems to be something you know an awful lot about.
>>3007801
You intended to make your image a smeary, underexposed mess that plays fast and loose with acceptable framing/negative space?
And you are an idiot if you think that cropping a photo which was awful to begin with will give it any more weight afterwards just because it doesn't suit your taste.
At least you're not trapped in the image, because if you were on the right side of the frame or the top you'd be suffocating under the awful framing. Fucking apply yourself and cool it on the pp.
>>3007800
>I wouldn't expect you to be able to follow an independent thought with an image as awful, cliche and uninspired as that.
Well you're not wrong anon, I come to /p/ for advice because as you and every other anon in this thread can clearly see I suck at this. I'm trying to learn and am always willing to take pointers and advice, but I understand this is 4chan and that isn't a very popular idea. But as I said, you're correct; it's an uninspired picture because, well, I'm uninspired.
>>3007802
Kek.
You don't have any clue what real photography is. Your words mean jack shit.
I bet you have an ironic beard, wear flannel and scream "Nnoooooooooooo!" in the mirror after your dad finishes all over your face.
Maybe someday you will stop being a complete ass to everyone to try to cover the pain of your dad's love. Until then, I look forward to seeing your useless and incorrect criticisms.
>>3007795
Already deleted the other photos but in order to get a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the flame, the rest of the image had to be very dark
>>3007807
Try using an ISO of 400, see if that helps with increasing shutter speed.
I'm not a fan of ISO over 200 or 400 myself, but if it works for what you are trying to do, give it a shot.
>>3007798
T-thanks for the advice anon
>>3007804
What were you truly trying to achieve with your image and how can you best reproduce that through photo.
What do the glasses and the cup have to do with the paper?
Why black and white?
Why frame it in such a way as to have the edge of the desk awkwardly break into the frame.
Think before you take the photo. What does this image represent other than a newspaper with glasses and a cup sloppily framed and shot with a kit lens at f3.5? Why are you shooting it wide open for 'dat bokeh, it isn't making your shot better.
This isn't art, this isn't even documenting the day in any meaningful way. Just think things through before you execute them or otherwise they turn out as an uninspired meaningless mess that anyone can spot at 100 yards. When you have a solid idea, think through the technical aspects that will make your image work, what focal length do I pick, what aperture, what shutter speed. Do this and you'll make it right.
As it is, this is the same as me taking a photo of my tablet in my bathroom with a news article and posting it to 500px. I wouldn't do that because it's a boring, uninspired thoughtless mess of a concept.
Keep it up, don't give up but most of all. Git gud.
>>3007809
Unfortunately even with an ISO of like 1600 and a wide open aperture, if I want the shutter speed to be quick enough the picture has to be darker ://
>>3007812
That's odd. What kind of lighting are you using to light the scene?
This is a shot I took with low ISO and natural lighting, and it came out the way I was looking for it to. I'm not sure what you are looking to achieve beyond well lit stove and stable flame?

Fuck off. If you can't handle the heat then get the fuck out of the kitchen.
>Maybe someday you will stop being a complete ass to everyone to try to cover the pain of your dad's love. Until then, I look forward to seeing your useless and incorrect criticisms.
Attack me and disregard my critique if you want but when you finally learn to distance yourself and actually take more than 100 photos that aren't snapshits and aren't close to your heart you'll see them for the flawed images that they are.
You're a beginner and right now it's your job to suck it up and listen when people give you pointers. You don't want to do that then go and do what sugar does, get yourself a tripcode, post in your own thread and never, ever strive to be better.
As it is, your portrait is a sloppilly, smeared mess. Not down to your gear but down to your own fucking limits as a photographer. Take the time to frame the image before you hit the shutter, If you're going to crop then THINK about the crop before you hit the shutter. Don't give us a sloppy, smeared, claustrophobic unbalanced cropped digishit mess and expect us to wolf it down just because you like it. You'll never grow if you don't push yourself and learn the fundamentals.
You can slap a watermark on your photo all you want but it's no different than slapping a sticker on a pile of shit. No matter how many likes you desperately want on your facebook page. And a little protip from one pro to another, shots of eyes are overdone, and so are aperture logos in your watermark, so think a bit harder on that too before you attempt your next disaster at murdering the art of photography.
>>3007819

You think you can judge a photographer by one photo? You are really a self centered clueless dipshit.
And it's not my job to listen to a damn thing you say, son. Especially when you are intentionally a dick about every thing you spew. There's no reason for you to be a dick to everyone who posts in these threads.
All the assumptions you made show that you are a talentless hack who is jealous of everyone else's ability and are trying to just pick out anything you don't like and harp about it to make yourself seem like you matter.

I think I can judge your photo objectively on it's own and you as a photographer by the way you represent yourself and in your own portfolio at facebook and Instagram url/sdbartography/
>it's not my job to listen to a damn thing you say, son.
Fine. Don't listen and don't grow. Continue to produce mediocre work.
>There's no reason for you to be a dick to everyone who posts in these threads.
That's just the thing. I'm not a dick to everyone who posts in these threads. I'm only a dick to people who post terrible photos, and I'll accelerate my being an asshole when they lash back. This is no different to what a good teacher will tell you.
>All the assumptions you made show that you are a talentless hack who is jealous of everyone else's ability and are trying to just pick out anything you don't like
Sure thing. Mind telling me what assumptions I made? As far as I can see, the only assumption I've made is that you didn't intentionally frame the shot this way, but if I'm wrong then that's even more of a reason for you to step up and apply yourself.
You're a beginner and that's fine. You'll grow out of this as you take more pictures and you'll grow a thick skin. Or you won't, and you'll continue posting pictures of eyeballs for teenagers to like on social media desperately hoping to stay relevant. You really will get there, give it time (maybe even a year).
>>3007833
Ooooh, you know how to use facebook. Yay for you.
Your assumptions are that your opinion matters and that being an asshat is the way to go.
You don't like my photography, and that's perfectly fine. Plenty of other people do.
My relevance is assuredly no concern of yours, and it's plenty enough for me.
So, let's see some of your work so we can critique it, Master.
>>3007840
I don't need to present my own body of work to critique one of your photos. Either step the fuck up and take the critique or get out of the kitchen. You're a beginner, it's your job to explore your creativity but don't start out with this massive chip on your shoulder. Take the feedback, pay more attention to your framing and strive for improvement. You really will get there given time and effort.
In case you were wondering, it's not hard to get a few people to like your work when you start out if you market yourself, but you'll never reach your full potential and be capable of winning awards and competitions without being able to self criticise and strive to be the best photographer that you can be.
I'd suggest learning the fundamentals. Learn to stop down when required, learn to frame your image and learn to not overcook your PP and you too can be as great a photographer as I am.
If you really need to see my body of work then you can see examples @ KenRockwell.com

See that's what pisses people off and makes you sound like a twat.
You are telling me to pay attention to my framing. I do. Most of my work is rule of thirds. The things that aren't, are that way on purpose because doing everything the same is boring.
I DO criticize myself constantly. But I also understand photography is an art, and art is diverse. It also isn't held to the views of one person who just enjoys being an asshole about things that he doesn't like.
And after looking through the gallery on your website, I can see why you and I clash.
Your stuff is way over saturated, harshly lit, and your framing is rubbish in quite a few shots. You do have some great work, but not nearly enough to be criticizing people the way you do.
Our styles are vastly different, which I can clearly see now. As such, I'm not going to waste anymore time going back and forth with you because we will never ever see eye to eye on photography. Good day, sir.

I like it because it feels like a photo of a specific place rather than the generic photo it could have been. I like that frozen water too with the 1/1000th. >keep taking photos regardless of what assholes think of your work.
That's the fucking point. How dense are you that you seriously haven't caught onto this yet? People get feedback on their photos for various reasons, composition, technical aspects, framing and concept. If one part of these is off then you should be thankful if someone replies. This isn't necessarily a place for someone to give you a pat on the back and say "good shot of an eyeball buddy, keep it up!". It's a place to get honest feedback on what you can be doing to further your own work. It's not being a dick just because you're too thin skinned to take criticism or never had a good, honest photography tutor in your life.
Since this is clearly going way the fuck over your bald head, let me state this to you: Comments and criticism are there to help you grow. It's advice for you to take on when you next take a photo. Even if I say that your photos are trash, the idea is that you go out and you take photos that aren't trash. Man the fuck up, this isn't some no child left behind sports festival where the person in last place gets a trophy. Apply yourself.
>But I will be going to bed. Good night
Good riddance.
>>3007936
Lmao.
You keep saying these things like you even know.
Comments and criticisms are there to help you grow.
Agreed.
Being an asshole and talking down to people who's work you don't personally care for and telling them they don't know what they are doing because their work doesn't agree with your personal tastes is NOT good criticism. You are just a douchebag. Plain and simple.
How about YOU man up and learn how to communicate your thoughts and ideas to people without talking down to them like you are some know it all master photographer?
I've seen you be polite. But only when you like what you see. That's a true mark of a douchebag.
Apply YOURSELF better.
And I don't know why you keep bringing up eyeball shots. Just because I like them that makes me a shitty photographer somehow? The fact that you keep harping about it makes you a shitty critic.
Good riddance indeed.

Except that's the fucking opposite of what's going on here. I commented on your photo because it was a mediocre portrait that was technically flawed and artistically bland. There's a reason I didn't comment on the landscape pictures or pictures of trees. It's because it's not work I care for.
>how about you man up and learn how to communicate your thoughts and ideas to people without talking down to them
I am. It's not my fault that you're too thin skinned to accept that the framing is poor in your portrait. It's not talking down to you when I tell you that it has a massive issue with negative space and shows that it wasn't composed in a wide format.
I'm bringing up the eyeball shots for you again, because it's an example that you can personally relate to. Like I said: No-one's here to give you a pat on the back and say nice photo of a tree stump.
If you're against your photos being critiqued on, then don't post them on the internet or outside your circle of friends.
I want to see you produce better work, but that won't stop until you stop being a thin skinned little pussy and accept that your photo that you posted IS a bad photo. It's unbalanced and shows little thought to composition. While you personally may have tried to compose the image, you have failed to do so because you are trying to apply the rule of thirds to a wide format (which is something that rarely, if ever works well). Wide or pano images require more than basic composition to make them work, just like 1:1.
I'd type you up a post on composing for wide formats, but you'd just see it as the ramblings of a dickhead who wants to seem he's better than you. If you can't handle it get out.

>>3007945
> It's not my fault that you're too thin skinned to accept that the framing is poor in your portrait
So.....rule of thirds is poor framing now? Seriously?
I'm all for my stuff being critiqued. That's why I posted it. But you don't critique. You just say dickhead shit based purely off personal taste and almost no technical or photography related sense.
Color this, contrast that, I don't like how you framed it, oh that subject isn't interesting to me.
That's the whole point I'm getting at. Your critiques are just if you like something or not.
It's like me saying Ford Mustang is the worst automobile out there simply because I don't like the front bumper. It's a shitty critique with no merit because it isn't based on the whole vehicle or any other valid points.
Your views on pano and framing and color and comp and so on are YOUR VIEWS. Not law. Not a rule. Not anything but your views. Not conforming to YOUR views does not make an image bad.
If you can't understand that.....Ugh. I just realized how much time I've wasted with all this. You can't open eyes that are sewn shut like this.
I'm done arguing with you, but I'll continue to be around. Criticize what I post or not, idgaf.

Reminds me of my parents just before they divorced. I'm triggered :(
But seriously, the fights on this board are even worse than they are on /pol/.
>>3007950
ah yeah i thought it might've been that, i saw you upload the original and then delete it so either you were a wanky tripfag who I won't mention, or doing that.
But yeah I'm assuming you're using a 35mm f/1.8 on a DX sensor. If you wanna do more portrait-y stuff like this, I'd recommend getting the 50mm f/1.8 one instead. Thing's like a hundred bucks. It allows you to get further away from the subject so you can stop down to f2.8 or 4 or whatever, to get the whole subject in close focus, but because you're further away it compresses the background just as much as f1.8 at the 35mm distance.
>>3007953
Triggered me as well.
But hey, I see a lot of constructive criticism going on too!
I wish I had had a better camera with me last week when I took this

>That's why I posted it.
Good.
>But you don't critique. You just say dickhead shit based purely off personal taste and almost no technical or photography related sense.
-but that's the exact opposite of what's happened here. You've been presented with criticism on your post processing and your framing which are 100% based off of the technical elements in your image. Take it to heart and try and sort the negative space issue next time.
In return, also have this snapshit which to my knowledge I've never posted here before because technically it's utter trash. Framing is kind of sloppy and a willingness to get on with finishing the roll led to me going trigger happy.
I'm glad you learned that "art" also has subjective elements. The difference is that I commented on objective elements in your photograph and not the subjective elements.
>>3007956
Awesome shot. The sun feels a bit strong and washed out, but I know it's not easy to get a good shoot directly at the sun. I like the colors and foreground. Personally I would have cropped the bottom out a bit so the pic starts with the green moss and not the gap.
>>3007959
Also to add to this image.
The reason why I'd never post it is because of the person in the foreground entering the plane of focus, but also the framing. I was sloppy when I composed and didn't notice the roof creeping into the left of the frame. My verticals aren't entirely vertical either.
I failed to capture what I wanted to capture which was a derelict shopping centre on it's last legs. To me this image is a solid 1/10 and deserves no PP and to not be shared.

I have 170k shots on my computer that are trash. Just like this one. I don't post them.
The ones I do post may not be to your liking, but they are to mine. And to the people who I took them of. Which is all that really matters at the end of the day.
The only thing I'm looking for here is "hey, I see this aberration" or "If I was you I'd crop blah blah blah out of the left side".
Not "you suck and your picture sucks because it isn't in my taste". You don't use those exact words, but close enough.
Either way, your shot that you feel is shit isn't that bad. The technical aspects you stated that you feel make it bad are actually what gives it character. Which is what you seem to be unable to appreciate in other people's pics.
But at least we've stopped cussing and throwing poo. It's a step.

I don't use those exact words because surprisingly that isn't my intent.
>I have 170k shots on my computer that are trash
If you've really taken 170k shots since August then good on you though. I've never seen someone so dedicated to wearing out their shutter life so quickly. I will at least thank you for not posting as frequently.
Those technical aspects I stated are objectively what make the photo bad. There's a difference between liking bad photos because you're attached to them and liking them because you're unable to understand what makes a photo a photo.
If you're not looking for those types of comments on your images, then don't post them, because that's exactly what they're going to get. I'm not here to tell you what you can take away from your image to make it passable, I'm here to tell you what your image is missing in the first place. How do you not realize that you are using the word "objectively" incorrectly? Photography is completely subjective. The objective parts are unintentionally bad focus and framing and exposure etc.
It isn't up to you to decide what is or isn't missing from a photo in the first place.
This is exactly what makes you come across wrong. You act like you are in charge of photography and only your thoughts and views are acceptable. You are literally saying that anything that doesn't adhere to what you think of as proper photography is trash.
I'd looooooove to hear you explain why you feel like you have the ultimate say on what is good and what isn't.
I'm legit interested in why you feel this way. Saying you don't won't work, because every single criticism says otherwise.

>Photography is completely subjective
>The objective parts are unintentionally bad focus and framing and exposure etc.
Your statement contradicts itself. Nothing further is required.
>It isn't up to you to decide what is or isn't missing from a photo in the first place
It's up to me to decide if I feel the image is claustrophobic or if there's something missing from the entire left side of the image (which there is).
>This is exactly what makes you come across wrong. You act like you are in charge of photography and only your thoughts and views are acceptable. You are literally saying that anything that doesn't adhere to what you think of as proper photography is trash.
I have never once stated this.
>I'd looooooove to hear you explain why you feel like you have the ultimate say on what is good and what isn't.
I don't have the ultimate say on what is good and what isn't. I am however saying that objectively the image is framed poorly and has large issues with negative space.
>I'm legit interested in why you feel this way
>Saying you don't won't work, because every single criticism says otherwise.
That's not what this is about, whether you accept it or not. You've been given criticism on your image based on the objective elements of the exposure. You can cry that it's all just subjective but the minute you start spouting that shit you may as well start stating that white balance, focus and composition are social constructs and that it's all subjective. Your portrait is a poor portrait and no amount of internet arguing is going to make the shot better.
Don't try to artfag this shit m8, you've never been in a real photography or art class and been forced to have your work viewed objectively. If you don't like your photos being judged, don't post them. If you don't want me to reply to your posts, get a tripcode and I'll filter every post you make.
Why do you have the ultimate say on what is critique and what's not, why does it only apply to your work?

Some super basic stuff wrong with this.
First of all the horizon feels off with it slanting to the left.
Secondly it feel imbalanced with the path leading to the right and the sun burst on the right, too much visual weight on that side.
Thirdly the path down the centre works if you are going for symmetry otherwise it needs to be either left or right.

It's not even about my pictures at this point. Idgaf about your view of my work.
My statement does not contradict itself at all. Photography is subjective. Mistakes are objective. Not difficult to understand unless you're an idiot.
You say you've never once stated that you think anything that doesn't adhere to your concept is trash, then do exactly that several posts down. Nice.
You cannot objectively state that an object has an issue with negative space or framing if the image looks exactly as intended. That is literally the definition of subjective. You can state your opinion of the pic and what you like or dislike all you want, but it's just your opinion.
I love how you think someone has to have taken art or photography class to be any good.
And finally, my say on what is critique or not isn't just my personal view. It's me stating literally what critique is. And I've already said you do sometimes do real critiques. But often you just talk shit to people because you think you're a photography God and know what's best for everyone.
Sorry if you can't handle criticism, but you aren't always right just like no one else including me is.

Just got a new lens, so like everytime, it's gonna get a lot worse before it gets any better.
Gotta flush out that new toy feel.

Not a recent shot, but a recent edit, I couldn't use all the tools needed back then to save this one.

Go to bed Scott.
>>3008394
You first Ken.
>>3008387
Cool shot. Curious if you got one with the focus further out?
>>3008256
I like it. Has a kinda 70's sci-fi novel cover feel to it with the tower and such. Have you tried to draw a little more color out of it?
>>3008064
That makes sense, thanks.
I struggle a lot with getting level-looking horizons when shooting handheld, especially when the terrain is as uneven as it is in this place. Normally I would've used my tripod and that would've made it a lot easier, but said tripod lives in the trunk of my car.
Here's another one that shows just how steep this area is, the photo looks reasonably level until you notice the light poles and stuff.

Looks like a perfect storm of lens and perspective distortion to me.
This isn't a final shot, more of a test than anything. Any CC?
>>3008421
I think your exposure is too long
blurring the stream is obviously the way to go, but now it's just looking like milk
>>3008419
There's some involved but it's just a stupidly steep hill, here's a version where I used the camera's digital level.

No CC until you assure us there are no gigantic fucking spiders lurking in this scene anon.
Thanks to OP I may never be able to look at another waterfall shot in my life without wondering what monsters lurk within it.
No fucking kidding.
>>3008425
Apologies-my brain just couldn't make sense of the other one.
>>3008421
The foreground looks kinda gross and distracting with such a long exposure. Also like anon said - the big waterfall looks like milk now. I reckon it would look nice if the big fall looked sorta like the small fall in the top left quarter of the image where you can still see some detail in the motion of the water.
Idk I've had a weird week. CC would be great

i like this. looks a little soft for this style so i would personally add some grain or something. crop more off the top too, may as well go thirds with the background line
>>3007515
can you or someone else help me with this image in particular? how do i achieve this look?
>>3008412
Thank you, yes I tried, but it's pretty much B/W out of the box. It was a very foggy day, but not the cool ground fog, the shitty one that just ruins landscape.
