Great shot! I love the composition, even if the lighting is just a tad bit harsh. Definitely has a nice stylized look when you're shooting so wide
>>3001659
It has a certain cinematic quality to it, I could see this as a still from a tv show if it were slightly cropped to match the aspect ratio
>>3001439
Too much shit in the background
>>3001508
Very nice, don't know if the eyes are completely in focus though.

It's okay but something is off, maybe it's the softness or the green tint?

Nice, I don't think it's too harsh
>>3001659
I like it, maybe come in tighter for less head room.

Also you cut off his hand and the red in the foreground is distracting. If you're gonna show him with the guitar then get the guitar in the picture not just the neck. It's a nice snapshot tho

>Film scan?
let me get this straight
its fp4 deved in caffenol I made today and heavily fogged because my temporary darkroom has many small leaks, deved in an ice cream container because I have no paterson on hand at the moment, and fixed with ammonia hydroxide, then scanned with a pentax 50 1.4 on extension rings, but i usually would use a tamron 60mm macro.
Basically its an abortion of a typical film scan but it is
pic related is a normal scan for me

This was taken at a vigil for a friend who died, I was drunk and sad and it was at night. I just like the real emotion captured by her cousin.
>>3002056
Sentimental value, probably yes to you.
Artsitic and good, absolutely not.
>>3002057
Yeah I agree, also the fact that I have the super low resolution version doesn't help. I do see art in the emotion though, but that's all subjective.
testo
>>3002067
I mean, it doesn't even look like it's at a vigil, could've been anything, cause she's just looking down with half opened mouth. There is art in emotion, but that particular picture doesn't show anything.

that crop job doesnt need to be that tall. right now it makes her look like a giraffe. why are her boobs in the frame. the darka round her sideboob is distracting as fuck. its throwing the balance off between her sideboob, and under the brim of her hat (the darkest parts).
also her eyeliner on the bottom eyelid...she needs to commit or dont wear it. the fact that i can see the white of the top of her eyelid is fucky, considering how much eye shit shes wearing.
>>3001973
grainy af. turn down the sharpness. contrast might be a little much. theres not much range in tone. not much for gray.
>>3001977
good pic. would really like him holding something to set a time as to when the photo was taken. theres a slight hint behind him, but its not clear enough to make out. considering the polaroid esque ness of the photo, the fact that i cant pinpoint a time frame is bugging me. that and really the only discernable subjects of the pic are the beer, the guy and the plants in the back. good photo. in the future, play around with items. a cell phone, or laptop would do this photo some real good.
>>3002057
>>3002067
>>3002056
the emotion you see is coming from the fact that you were there. to those of us who werent there, her face is a little neutral. without your text, i would have just seen it as some chick at a show. in regards to sadness, it isnt quite encapsulated in this pic, but again, the text does a lot for putting it in context.
the background is a little bright, considering her shit and hair. also her necklace is distracting. kind of throws it off.
>>3002180
not bad, but why? also what is she looking at? her focus is off in the distance, but not at anything in particular.
i like what you did with her lips, good lighting. and the hair.would be cool to have the plants in between you be in focus as well, or at least with more detail. would be very good for framing.
>>3001659

The sky has a purple tint, he looks like he's hiding his face or is embarassed/doesn't want his picture taken, uncomfortable if you will. His skin tone looks ashy, and there's is no connection since we can't really see his eyes. The only good thing is the roof - makes for a nice composition.
Your squirrel photo is shit, too yellow, blown highlights, lacks contrast, composition is okay tho.

If I did what you posted, it'd look extremely unnatural, and her skin in your 'take' looks like she's sick. Maybe check your monitor, cause your presented photos have actual shit colors.
Also, the subject has enough room around her, not sure what you meant by that? But looking at your photos, I'd rather sit back and wait for someone else to comment.

just saying. it feels bright. i look at it and it hurts and that is because of that shining fucking white above her head. theres an excess of space above her head, and what that space has to contribute is a glaring white sheet of space

youre coming of as pretty defensive.
also hes right in that you should back off even further with such a wide angle, her face looks distorted and the size of her nose is emphasized.
you should also note that the point of highest contrast is off to the right side, makes the background more distracting
>>3002279
not him but you know there are people with generally big noses
>>3002283
and when taking a photo of them the photographer should try not to emphasize that, at least not in the kind of photo he was trying to make. like its sort of ok to be fat, but you should still not be wearing vertical stripes.
>>3002283
not you but some of us can generally identify focal length by simply looking at a photo.
that's no narrower than 35mm - simply is an incorrect focal length for a 3/4s shot.
>>3002287
The girl is Armenian, she has a big nose by default. Whatever I try, she's always gonna have a big nose in the pic. Is the background really distracting? It's a nice, small, soft street, she's centered and sharp. Wherever you look, you always come back to her face.

I have my own reasons for post processing the colors the way I did and if all you gotta say about it is that it's shit then I got a nice board for you with very like minded individuals over at /b/

The subject is too dark, and the darkness doesn't convey anything. There's a lot of wasted frame.
Candids are hard to nail. Shooting in raw can help, as can cropping, but for the most part you're looking for that combination of luck and skill that sometimes results in a great shot.
Critiques? Pretty new to this
>>3004462
I wish the light were a tad softer. The angle and brightness is at a good level though. The viewer's attention is drawn to the catchlight in his left eye, but that effect's spoiled by the random ass bright-red cup that just sits there and doesn't do anything but distract you. Having catchlights in both eyes is pleasant, and you generally make good use of the frame/crop. Just don't throw that random ass chunk of plastic in there.
Consider what your subject is. Consider what you have in your frame. Does everything in it serve to add to the subject? No? then you should probably get rid of the offending item/effect

guy who took the picture here, what is exactly a wide angle lens, I took that picture with the default 18-55mm that the camera has, is that considered a wide angle lens? can you tell it was shoot with that lens?
>>3004818
We can see your exif data my dude.
You're at 35mm focal length equivalent, which is considered a medium wide angle lens (with 50mm being "standard").
The fact that you don't know this is actually to be commended - certainly didn't stop you nailing the shot.
>>3004818
Wide angle is generally 35mm or less on a full frame camera. The shorter the focal length, the more distorted, fisheye the photo looks. Also it's in your exif data.

making the photo black and white added nothing to it. Black and white is mostly useful for emphasizing certain lighting elements; the only lighting element you're emphasizing here is the overexposure of his jaw/neck, which distracts from the subject; his face.

How do I get this quality of pictures by myself? Nobody I know really knows how to take a decent portrait shot
>>3005097
That's not really a decent portrait shot. And to answer your questing, lighting is absolutely paramount in portrait photography. It's the difference between a snapshit and a great photo. Learn as much as you can about different lighting setups.

It's not hard to learn, but a lot of new photographers just tend to get overwhelmed by the idea of working with lights. Just follow diagrams like this, compare your results to the examples and make a few adjustments until you're comfortable with the set up. Then try to learn new setups.
Here's a good tutorial to get you started.

The issue with directing is that you really have to know what you want from the model, like going in with a vague statement will basically fuck up your whole shoot.
Also if you're on location shooting, or the scenario is going to be shit for the model, do try and keep them happy or entertained. A lot of models are alright but there are far more who are going to be cunts about every little detail when they're pissed off. It's best to avoid that if possible.
>>3004719
Really depends on the person you're shooting. If it's an actual model, you shouldn't need much, some of them just go off on their own and it works.
If it's a novice or just someone who wants nice photos, start by telling them where their main light is. For example if light is coming from camera left and the model keeps looking off to camera right or holding their right hand up to their face etc etc... Then you're gonna waste time, opportunities and photos.
A simple method is.
>this is your main light
>every time you hear the camera take a photo I want you to change pose slightly - you may have to tell them more than once
>don't spend too long in the same spot/style
>chimp your photos when you start to see something working, focus on that
>>3005365
My biggest question after all these years is whether that's the same, original mug, or if you have tons of them. It would be remarkable if you had so many girls hold it but no one ever dropped it or chipped it or anything.

still too much for me, her face looks like it's made or a harsh material like concrete.

one layer i used to sharpen it, another layer desaturated her whites of the eyes, and another layer to make the overall area brighter, plus another layer to make fine details brighter

unflattering angle, decent lighting
>>3001385
Good photo, bad portrait. No subject isolation, distracting background, bad use of space.
>>3001436
still an unflattering angle. Try shooting from a higher angle so you can bring the chin up while still getting the look.
>>3001437
Good
>>3001439
Good lighting, bad crop. Try and avoid hands being super far away from the plane of the face too, it's not flattering to look like Uncle Jack.
>>3001508
Odd crop. Good overall but lighting is a bit weird, she looks like she needs to shave her entire face.
>>3001522
Good composition but the green light should be either more or less contrasted with the rest of the face. Also learn to focus.
>>3001606
Very well done, except 24mm is a terrible focal length. Look how bulged out the facial features are. If you're after a gypsy look then it's great but she looks more Jewish than my Rabbi.
>>3001659
Good shot for an ad or film, not fantastic as a portrait. If you shifted right and got the subject taking up the right 2/3 of the frame with the fish tank taking up the left 1/3, it would draw the eye more to the person. By no means a bad shot, but a portrait needs to focus on the person.
>>3001937
There's no way this was posed, right? Good exposure and everything, but terrible comp. Cropped just above the eyes, cropped off half the chest, too much blank space on the right. It looks like you'd just finished a shoot and the model was busy walking away when you pressed the shutter.
>>3001940
The person's squinting because they're looking directly into the sun. Try backlit, or direct the subject better (which is hard because kids are little shits)
>>3001973
I like this image but it's too grainy.
>>3001977
There's a reason you don't do photography when you're drunk. Fun photo for Facebook, terrible portrait.
>>3002051
Nice image, two problems. First the image is veeery grainy, and it would be much better with a catch light for the eyes.
>>3002052
See, just by going from 24-35 the facial features are far more flattering. This shot is fine for the look it's going for.
>>3002056
Appreciate it for what it is. It's not a good portrait, not even close. But it has absolute and tangible sentiment, so value it for that.
>>3002168
Best image in this thread.
>>3002180
Either more shit or less shit in the foreground. It looks unintentional.
>>3002215
She reads Latin my ass.
>>3002239
Unflattering lighting, purple tint.
>>3002243
See this is at least a decent focal length for a portrait. Unflattering lighting though, bring out the eyes not the nose.
>>3002264
Very good.
>>3002268
Squinting because he's looking into the sun. Move the subject.
>>3002301
Cute picture, stop it down a bit so she's in focus. Also not a fan of the corner shadow.
>>3002303
Good photo, gross pose.
>>3002306
Depends on the look you're going for, but chin up works best: thins out the neck and makes the forehead look less gargantuan.
>>3002388
You accidentally got a flower in the foreground in the bottom left, didn't you.
>>3002465
Pretty good, at least the hands are in the same plane as the face. Ditching the lens flares might improve it. I like the blown out sky with the backlit moving hair.
>>3002468
Grainy and face isn't in focus. Stop down a touch.
>>3002484
This is good. THIS is appropriate for a wide angle, a headshot isn't.
>>3002583
>>3002582
>>3002581
>>3002580
All of them look bored, not pouty. Also get a catchlight to bring out the eyes.
>>3003093
Good composition, focus on point. Pose is a little awkward but it could work.
>>3003112
Good thing it's 4.24 mb, I don't need to open it to see the bad lighting and composition.
>>3003119
Make this black and white or it looks like you've rubbed cream on the lens.
>>3003268
Higher focal length and farther away at a lower aperture gives background compression. Not a good angle either.
>>3009434
I was holding a flower on the bottom left to fill up that green space with more of the same violet from the flower
>>3009439
Yeah... Then shoot from a different angle. The violet makes it distracting. Instead of looking at the subject I'm wondering why there's a purple smudge in the frame.
>>3003093
kek i had that lens a few years back, sharp as hell but sold it due to the flat as fuck depth rendition. what a piece of shit.
got a couple of portraits
dunno if this is a portrait
last one
>>3004228
This has potential to be great, but you need to learn a ton of basic editing. At a bare minimum, you need to bring up the exposure. Pic related. She could also use some color correction on her skin blotchiness and some basic D&B. When people are cold, their skin gets incredibly uneven. That's fine, but you've got to correct it.
>>3009537
none are VSCO really, i haven't actually used it for a long time but i learnt a lot from it in terms of post techniques

Time spent looking at a blurred background is time spent distracted from the subject. It is very rare that a powerful photo includes irrelevant shit. That extra frame that is spend on including background adds nothing to the subject (you already know it's trees and foliage and shit; who cares). Not adding is effectively detracting.

lol what a tool. nicely exposed, tho.
From an engagement shoot I did over the summer. They were nearly an hour late, so the light was fading by the time he proposed. In retrospect, I should have charged twice what I asked.

Decently in focus and properly exposed. With that much, you're ahead of the curve. But you've got plenty of room for improvement. Now, you need to focus on details.
First, there's too much headroom in the shot. It's just a big pile of empty white nothingness at the top of the frame. They could be positioned much more prominently in the frame.
Second, the guy's shirt is sloppy all around. His collar is being pulled back awkwardly. The unbuttoned second button is really bizarre and cheesy looking. (Not casual, but amateurish.) And his shirt isn't tucked in all the way. See how it's all baggy around his belt? You've got to notice that shit and fix it.
Third, get the phone out of his pocket. Every single time you're shooting somebody with pants and pockets, ESPECIALLY suit pockets, make sure there's not a giant rectangle dong on their thigh.
Fourth, you need to learn some skin editing, especially some basic spot correction and D&B. This isn't some super refined studio shot, so I'm not saying you have to turn them into china dolls. but you still need to clean up shit and make it look more presentable.
Fifth, see that giant blog of skin in her armpit? Girls hate that shit. You've got to notice that and tell her to readjust her top and pull it up. Will that feel awkward coming from you? Maybe, but it's a hell of a lot better than her getting her finished shot and that sticking out like a sore thumb to her.
Again, this has promise, but you've got to focus on details. Anybody can get a DSLR and learn focus and exposure. Details are what separates the wheat from the chaff.

Nigga, I don't know what time this was, but the light wasn't fading too much. There's still plenty of fucking glare on their faces. You had plenty of light and plenty of time.

>My photos aren't that bad.
M8, literally every time you post here at all you are flamed into fucking orbit for how terrible your photos are.
And everytime, you fob off the criticism with, "oh, the model chose that, this was unavoidable", etc etc.
No. You're the photographer. You're presenting your work for criticism. You are responsible for literally every single thing within the 4 walls of the frame.
If your model shows up looking like a fucking Chuckie doll, fix it.
If she shows up dressed as the rape victim from a 90's true crime doco dramatic re-enactment, fix it.
If that's beyond you, shoot with flattering lighting, poses and angles.
If that's beyond you, fix it in post, by at least getting the skin tones looking human, over her entire body, and by not oversharpening her already contoured-to-shit, canyon-dimpled, eyes-too-close-together, curly haired fucking cabbage patch kid face.
If all of these things are beyond you, you are not a good photographer, you are fucking trash and you should probably save it for facebook.

That's my fault for not giving her some sort of direction on how to dress for that day's shoot, but I'm not going to tell a girl to go wash off and redo her makeup. That's really rude. If she's confident in the way she looks, that's what matters.
I am probably a trash photographer since /p/ hates me so much, but the shots I get satisfy me for the work I did. Plus I really enjoy taking the photos I take, may it be portraiture, concert shots, landscapes, etc.
I did go back and mess with the H/S/L on all the shots of her before sending them to her because they did have a bit of a magenta cast, but it wasn't from the WB.
Rokinon is super cheap lol.

If this is happening to you so often then you need to find a way to fix it. Don't just shoot photos of shitty models with a fucking birthday cake of makeup on and accept that as your only option. You're pretty good at posing and directing by the looks of it and you're letting horrible shit like this be ruined.
If you want to fix it without being rude, learn how to apply makeup. Telling your model to go wash all of her shit off and put it back on is rude. Offering to fix her makeup isn't. If you can't find anyone to practice on, practice on yourself. Go out and buy a makeup kit and doll your masculine face up until you learn how to create contours that look good in available light without looking like you face planted into a pumpkin pie.
Remember, these are YOUR photos.
did the flare ruin it?

I'd rather find a girl who could do the makeup on the models, then trying to figure out how to apply makeup well.
I went back and re-edit one shot to see if I could get it looking better. I feel like this edit helps to have more realistic skin tones.
