Why would you buy this and not a used but good condition EOS series camera? You can get a 1D Mark II for that money. Save just a little longer and you can get a 5D or 1DS.

I suppose it is cheaper to get the Powershot if you don't plan on investing in any more lenses or want a lighter weight camera.

I don't know, man. For the money that's a pretty good lens and camera body combination, even if you can't ever separate the two. But if you plan on ever upgrading you'll be in the same boat again of rebuying a whole new setup of body+lens.
