2016
- Made a bit of progress with composition in the last couple of months, I feel that I have been shooting slightly differently with the new Leica and I am happy to be seeing a bit of change.
- I went to Norway which in terms of photos was mostly squandered. I did have a nice time but why the fuck do you guys care, this is a photography board. The trip did bag me a load of new insta followers though thanks to Reddit.com/r/travel which I guess is something, even if it felt a bit dirty.
2017
- Develop my ability to take nice photos without having to travel hundreds of miles to find something I can make look good.
- Start a series I've been mentally chewing on for a couple of years now, portraits of religious figures in my local area and the buildings in which they work.
- Have more adventures but try to innovate rather than reproducing the clichéd fucking tourist snaps I usually take

2016, I'd say was ok but I dropped the ball after Summer and had long stretches where I didn't take anything. Loads of holiday snapshots but I really didn't push myself enough. This year my aim is to take some every day, so I don't get out of the habit again.

-solo show, it was nice finally do show I wanted with full curatorial control. It went well.
-had a well received show with 2 other artists that got some decent write ups
-4 other shows, 6 is a nice number to have in a year
-made a pile of progress in photogrammetry, enough to finally drop some work off at the gallery
-finally set up a tank to do cloud shots and have been enjoying it quite a bit.
-finished the mantis portraits, I don't need anymore
2017
-see how far I can push the photogrammetry thing. There's a lot of interest in it and keeps threatening to open up doors.
-finish up the work for the second mantis show, the gallery is down for it
-actually get around to doing the handful of shots needed to have an artificial landscape show. There's a couple of key images I keep kicking down the road taking.
-have more shows outside of Omaha, the scene here is not good and has problematically low prices because of how the scene here works

Do you mean a bad time of day, lighting wise? because yeah i should defo wait for the light to be right. i've never actually really done that in the way proper landscape photogs do, far more an opportunist which is an approach i have a lot less respect for.
Going back to portraits should be ok but I guess we'll see. My natural inclination is towards portraits but I so rarely find them interesting, so the religious series is an attempt to contextualise them with some good stuff.

time of day, time of year, etc. Honestly weather is more important than time of day. Just take a look through the photos you posted here and consider the different locations with different weather. I wouldn't say it's a waste for me, because I enjoy the process of it, apart from the actual scanning, but of course wet prints are far superiour, and more satisfying as an end result.
I'm doing B/W in my kitchen, but may get access to a proper darkroom later this year.

I've been enjoying the fuck out of playing with harman direct positive paper, enough so I've started making designs for an 11x14 camera to shoot it with. You should give it a go if you have a LF laying around. Preflashing it can help with the hilarious contrast but it takes fucking with so plan on the first box being a giggles box. Much cheaper than shooting film as well.

This is a classic case of the subject being beautiful but the photos themselves showing no skill, talent, or even effort.
Maybe you would improve more as a photographer if you shot locally for a while instead of traveling. Try creating good photos from a place that isn't full of mountains and fog, because let's face it; that stuff is easy mode.

You can do better than this. Slow down and think before shooting. Bring a tripod maybe so you have some time to consider the shot while you set it up.

-Started shooting nearly 100% film.
-Taking advantage of cheap e6 processing and shoot slide again for the first time in years. Shooting almost all slide when using 6x6 now.
-started 6x6 photo project on Industrial area that I'm still working on.
-bought bw developing supplies again.
-shooting a ton of p&s 35mm and really falling in love with it again.
-starting to finally take photos of strangers I would've been too pussy to shoot before.
Pic is one of my favorites of 2016. Going to get it printed 16x16 eventually.
-2017-
-wrap up industrial project by July.
-keep shoot lots of 35mm of daily life stuff
-head to se Asia in August and proceed to travel around for who knows how long. Not sure what cameras to take yet.

Shot again for the first time in 3 years. Studied and went out into the field seriously from 2006-2013. When I failed to achieve any sort of aesthetic or artistic vision of my own, when everything was derivative and unimaginative I put everything in the deepest darkest hole of my soul. But the fire rises. I started shooting again and realized I had lost alot of what had become second nature. I could still see the image I wanted but I was even farther from being able to make it. I feel like a child fumbling with the buttons and knobs that were so easy before. I hate everything I shoot even more. Friends and family all told me how much they loved my work before I quit. They all say how great it is to see me shooting again. I don't know. I still feel like a fraud. I never had a show of any of my collections. I have never even printed anything other than proof size. I have over a 250k archived images and I never show anyone without them asking. I spent nearly every free hour and day in the field for most of my adult life and have nothing to show for it. I love looking through the lens and feeling the light as it bounces off the mirror and into my eye, searching for a vision or and image. It's there, I realize it for only a moment, a flash of something I cannot capture. My skills and passions will never be adequate. My vauge ambitions leave me aimless. Can I create art? Can I at least create a unique photo that isn't just like everything else? I'm starting to doubt it. I don't even know what the point is anymore. What I enjoy so much seems to torture me. I went to the Grand Canyon and didn't get one photo I was proud of. I nearly jumped in when the sun was setting because the pain of the futility. It's just a a big long whole in the ground. The sun is just a fire ball in space. The camera is Japanese techno masturbator. My life is meaningless. Photography has killed me a thousand times over.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. After 10 years, it feels like the task of Prometheus, hauling this burden to create something that pleases me up the hill only to have it roll back again on me. All I wanted to do was steal a little fire and light from the gods. I love photography and without it my life was meaningless for those three years. But after a year back in it, I am straining to keep my eyes open. Everywhere I go I see images and objects of beauty and it haunts me that I can't seem to contribute anything. I see shit at art fairs and other places and think I have alot of images way better than that. But I never do anything about it. Life is a nightmare of my own making. I might be good and too self conscious to show people what I have been so carefully crafting all these years. I might be genuinely shitty and just trying to believe I have made even a few images of any interest. I may just like seeing the world differently through a lens, like a magic set of eyes, a super power of sorts. I don't know any more. I just don't even know.

Since 90% of my photography is done while traveling and I traveled very little this year, it was kind of meh
Highlight was certainly my trip to Venice, such a beautiful city (pic related on Burano).
Shot MF for the first time, started developing my own film in color and B&W as well as scanning. Also started doing prints which was nice.
Also got my hands on some nice photo books and generally discovered that I want to do architecture and landscape photography most
Gearwise I sold my Canon and Fuji and got a Ricoh GR II and love it so far

Already have travel plans for 12-14 countries across 4 continents so that should definitely be a step up from this year. Mostly looking forward to Nippon, Namibia and Venice again.
I have two projects I want to accomplish next year, one starting from tomorrow that is more about social media and kind of a treasure hunt, the other a more classical project where I want to explore a certain subject during one of my trips
Also another goal is to try to have at least one photo thread up on /p/ per month (already accomplished for January)

The function of the overwhelming majority of your artwork is simply to teach you how to make the small fraction of your artwork that soars. One of the basic and difficult lessons every artist must learn is that even the failed pieces are essential. X-rays of famous paintings reveal that even master artists sometimes made basic mid-course corrections (or deleted really dumb mistakes) by overpainting the still-wet canvas. The point is that you learn how to make your work by making your work, and a great many of the pieces you make along the way will never stand out as finished art. I wonder if taking a picture of myself on the timer, diving into the Grand Canyon at sunset would be a notably apt self portrait of the artist for me. Imagine mfw I see the shutter click too late because I messed up the timing and I'm just out of frame, but the image of the canyon is best one I could ever make in my life. Perfect form and color and light. A fucking masterpiece, and I never see it as I swan and tumble off the rocks. This is essentially my life as a photographer. 2017 goals I guess

2016-
-Discovered I enjoyed photography
-bought babies first DLSR and started learning the basics
-Spent the summer in San Francisco and forced myself to go out and shoot as much as I could
-Once school started back up took a non-major intro to "art" photography class, mostly used it for more structure with what I was going out to shoot
-depression hit hardest around the same time, lost the fun in shooting and just became work I had to do
2017
-Attempt to shoot mostly film using the rangefinder I bought over Christmas
-learn how to develop and scan my own film
-Save up money for a better digital body and a xbox hueg zoom lens so I can finally be the nature fag I've always wanted to be.

Started taking photos just this last summer. Decided I really enjoy it as a hobby as I travel a bit for work. I have plenty of opportunities to get nice shots despite my newbie skill set. As of late I've been occupying a lot of my free time reading beginners books and advice articles, trying to make sense of all the numbers and getting used to the fundamentals still.
I just picked up a Nikon D7200 as I plan on doing a lot of low light photography, and its an amazing upgrade from the D80 I've been using the past 6months.
This year I hope to internalize all the setting and options with my camera and try to find my niche. So far I really like the look of using IF filters for B&W photography. So I'll probably make the D80 I have a dedicated IF camera by replacing the filter in that camera.

Nobody said anything about sharpness or golden spirals. As was said already they are probably well liked by the people in them but strangers on a photography forum have no interest in snapshots of people they don't know.

I guess the road takes up a lot of the frame and I tend to think thinner roads work better for leading the viewer into the background but it's not a huge problem for me. I love the mountains (obviously). I would prefer the hue of the sky be brought down slightly towards the purple end.
I guess "took decent photos" as a summary of your 2016 doesn't really mean much to me and gave me nothing to work in any response I might have given. Decent compared to what?
Your 'thematic cohesion' point about 2017 rings very true for me, and I have a deep longing to produce something this year which resembles a 'body of work' rather than just continuous ephemera.
We all like to shit on Isi because of her caustic personality but she has an impressively well established style in what I am absolutely happy to call her 'body of work'. And Kurwa's recent thread in my opinion wasn't at all insulting. I even said to him in private before I knew his nefarious scheme that I thought there were three great shots in the set.

regarding the house shot. I really had trouble framing the shot. there's a huge building to the right that has somekind of bridge across the street ( I am standing under the bridge in the pic) and there where some garages on the left that were kind of messy.

there is very little processing done in most of these pictures , I usually bump up the contrast a bit and then lighten the blacks.
I sometimes play around with vibrance and saturation, like adding vibrance and reducing saturation.
the two pictures you mentioned are actually shot on the same day.
it was a really grey winter day and about 1 hour before sunset.
I really want to make a series about my hometown. I visit it once a year- I used to hate it and still dont particulary like it , but there is something I like about it that most people from there probably don't see.

I think these are your best pictures, I didn't look too closely at the rest but they seemed overly generic. In these ones your eye has clearly been drawn to rich, visually interesting patterns and colours that spread out more or less horizontally on the ground. But these crucial qualities are being overpowered and obscured by the compositions, more precisely by the dominant, open horizon lines therein. The privilege you're giving the horizon (by making it the main point of visual interest) decisively renders the experience of space in the images in terms of linear or renaissance perspective. This implies a quality of depth and volume, a sense of spatial orientation, that quite literally flattens these pretty natural displays into projected surfaces, like wallpaper.
To put it differently, it seems like you're disregarding what is brilliant and valuable about the world in front of you as you attempt instead to reproduce a preconceived ideal image of what you (well, you and most of western civilization I guess) think a landscape should be. But this is such a deprecated genre that you shouldn't be afraid of trying to break the mould.

Well the entire scene in (>>2997047) is on a slope (I remember because I used a bubble level to keep the camera horizontal there). My comment was just a technical way of explaining why I think that you're spending too much time looking through the viewfinder instead of looking at the scene itself and trying to figure out ways of directly grasping/showing what interests you there. (You might try shooting with your camera on a tripod and using a cable release.) Framing landscape in the conventional way means making the scene legible in terms of a specific ordering intelligibility based on the idea of a single, synoptic viewpoint. It's not so cut and dry an issue as either having a horizon or not. The fact is that in the pictures I quoted the horizon occupies a place of particular prominence in the image, and it is mostly empty (clearly visible); the horizon in photographs always delineates a visual axis around which all the lines converge, but here it does so quite forcefully. The (main) issue is that this is a sort of framing or presentation that sets up a space to be filled by a discrete subject. Landscape photographs have traditionally approached this via techniques like using a tiny little picturesque human figure or elevating a feature of the landscape to that status. In the case of your pictures the subject can be said to be those really interesting colours and patterns carpeting the ground. But that means calling on what is, properly speaking, the ground--to figuratively occupy a space that it is otherwise already constituting.. it doesn't work. either the scenes are empty and devoid of conventional interest, or they are being hampered by your insistence on making them look like paintings. It's like you don' even have a cake, but you're already trying to eat it, too. To recapitulate: the most interesting/worthwhile thing in the scenes are the natural features I described. However your framing and composition direct the viewer's attention elsewhere.

A good year but with nowhere near as much achieved as I had hoped. Still, I'm happy that I have made some ground on identifying what I am trying to achieve with my photos, and exactly where I want to focus my efforts in terms of themes and set structure to produce overall projects I'm happy with.
2017
For the coming year I plan to focus on exploring on these ideas and really trying to nail them, and complete some of my half finished sets. I am hoping to have a small exhibition with a friend by years end, finally finish my website and really push myself to take photos that extend outside of my current narrow box

I think i took some good pictures in 2016, also learned a lot .
as a person i changed a lot too, and my style kind of changed along with me.
for 2017, i have no definitive wants or plans, but I hope to become more self-sufficient with developing. I shot mostly color in 2016 and did not develop one c-41. I need to slow things down a bit, shoot some B&W and develop and scan myself.
everyone wants to get better, obviously, but i kind of want 2017 to be more about enjoyment when it comes to this shit. i was depressed , in a slump, blase blah in 2016 and want more than anything to just have more fun and better experiences. Im kind with >>2996648 's philosophy.

I'm an absolute pleb at photography. I just like to take pictures because it's f-n. Having lurked this board for a while, I think for 2017 I should at least make an effort to get the hang of all the buttons and settings my shitty camera has and see what I can achieve with it.
Pic related is probably my personal favorite of 2016. It's probably subpar from a technical perspective but the scene still gives me quite a feel.

Just started photography in 2016. While I've got nothing amazing, it's still a big improvement from my earlier pictures of nothing/lack of subject.
Eggy inspired me to take my telephoto mirror lens out on the street, but /p/ really hates those pictures so I'll just post some local scenery.
I'm really proud of my Pentax Q. It was my first camera. Can't believe I had it listed on ebay for a month. Glad no one bought it, I would have regretted it. Perfect camera to hand off to kids to learn/play with, it allowed me to share my passion with my students.
