yeah it was snowing really hard and I debated for like 5 mins whether I wanted to go back inside and setup the camera, there was not a lot of room at all either. It says no flash used but I did blast a yongnuo, which gave the effect that I thought it would.

This seems like a weird question, but here I go:

I recently found myself toying with Colour balance in Darktable (FOSS Lightroom replacement), especially to do something I have come to call "White-Alignement". What I basically do is I bring the spikes in the different colour-channels in the histogramm to align with each other to create white spikes.
Sometimes I do it with spikes (if the image has em) and sometimes merely with the edges of the area (i.e. the highlights and the shadows) with some fiddling with the midtones/gamma. I don't perfectly align all spikes, but I use them as an indicator where I need to push what.

I have the feeling as if this increases the range of colours visible in the image, makes the entire image richer or at least takes a certain colour-bias out. It doesn't always look good or work right and it certainly can't be done with every picture (especially where one colour should dominate) and can sometimes ruin certain tones (like skin tones), but it creates very pleasing results in my opinion.
Is this a normal thing to do? Is this something you do too? does it have a name or a specific purpose.

Here's another, more subtle example.
Sometimes I really only push the shadows and highlights of certain colours in to make clean ends on the histogram, sometimes, I go further and really go into the colours.
People seem to actually be a bad subject for this because of skin colour, but especially on pic related, it felt like I really seperated the face from the background and clothes. (top-right) is manipulated)

for a static subject like this, bring down your iso and use tripod or place on something and use a 2 second timer so that when you press shutter it doesnt shake. honestly this is a comfy shot so retake it at a lower iso. cool the temperature a bit compliments the snow and night.

Short of making a new thread this seems to be the best place to ask.

I've been shooting for about two or three months, learning the triangle, learning composition etc. and I'm enjoying myself, but struggling to allow myself to be creative. I always seem to fall back on the rule of thirds, centre focus, symmetrical geometry (when possible) and "normal" looking colours.

I put the pictures in LR and edit the image until it looks like what I remember seeing. How do you convince yourself that an artistic choice you make isn't just being different for the sake of being different?

Hopefully that makes sense. Basically what I'm saying is how do you have the confidence to do what you want instead of what you think others want?

I was exactly like you few months ago.

The solution is to stop thinking about rules, but thinking what YOU think is right and what YOU want to see in your picture, because there's simply no rules in photgraphy (except that you need a sensor)
Play with contrasts, shapes, textures... and just do what you want and have fun!

Also take your time to know your gear, don't just point, shoot and go.
Think of what settings would be the best to get the result you want (lower the exposure to get silhouettes? Do I want motion? Does this tree serve the composition well?).

With this in mind I think you'll start to enjoy a lot more photography

Why is your ISO higher outdoors?
Why are you shooting portraits with a wide angle and putting your subject on the side of the frame and not lighting them properly and including acres of background clutter?
What compositional rules did you apply to these shots? What options did you consider but discard?
