I posted the first few of these in the /fgt/ thread a few days ago.
I really enjoy the XA2, moreso than the XA I used to have. After one roll I understand the scale focus distances and it's so much quicker than focusing via the RF patch on the OG XA.

Missed the focus on this one unfortunately. I thought setting the scale focus to middle would've been perfect. I learned that if your subject is more than 10ft away setting the focus to 'far' will get your perfectly focused images.

the light here is good, actually perfect, hopefully this is a place/time you can come back to a lot and "stake it out", as it were, because I think that there is an amazing photo in the scene that will appear under the exact right conditions. In short, the contrast between the figures inside the train and the shadows of the people standing on the platform is very compelling, but it would be better if the people inside the train were most clearly/less blurrily rendered; if the live figure of the train conductor was not part of the crowd of the shadows, or at least was integrated into them in a more meaningful way; and also possibly if the shadows/silhouettes were higher up on the side of the train, more clearly differentiated, and animated in more meaningful poses.

very good composition, very good contre-jour, also I don't know if you've noticed but the image ultimately seems to focus all our attention on the shiny black shoes of the students because 1) they appear in the compositional focal point, 2) they have a lot of visual contrast and detail--deep blacks and bright white reflections, etc. etc. 3) they are mostly distinctly shaped in contrast to the blurryness of the students.

compositions are nice and crisp but on a more tangential note I've been wondering lately if architecture photography should really be all about compressing the building down into a flat (2D) modernist abstraction or serviceable approximation thereof. I mean, in one sense it's kind superfluous given what the building already does, don't you think? But also in the sense, which Douglas Crimp has suggested, that the photos tend to become mnemonic, recognizable, semiotic, etc. Of course, having human figures in the image is a way to combat this but personally that seems lame and also full of other issues about how to represent the architecture. I like your first pic of the Hyougou museum the best because the incorporation of the mountains in the background and the glass facade on the right helps re-assert a sense of depth but the diagonal shadows still suggest a sort of overall flattening schematism.

I transfer trains at this station 5 times a week every morning. In this instance I figured it'd be cool to have the train blurred so I waited until it was departing to fire a frame. In retrospect I don't think this was a good choice. I'm definitely going to reshoot this a ton of times. Thankfully the extreme punctuality of the trains here means I get this exact same scene every morning, so long as the sun is shining.

Stoked you picked up on that! I've noticed that longish exposures tend to leave the feet in focus with everything else blurred, so it's something and seek out in the right conditions. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to happen with this shot...but I guess the 100 speed film caused the camera to shoot at a slower shutter than I was anticipating. My main draw to the scene was the shadowed figure in the window + the totally visible students further out on the platform.

This flattening of space is something I really want to explore more, and I tend to do it when possible (here's another example). Sometimes I'm photographing architecture for my own personal library to fall back upon once doing my Masters, but other times I'm simply wanting to abstract it to the point of confusion/nonrecognition.

I lurk /p/ and post a fair bit, usually trying to help out with questions. This is the only place I know of where you may luck out with some critique so I make photo threads once I've built up 20 or so images. I've been really slacking with the digital stuff though. Haven't bothered editing much from 2015 up until mid 2016.
