ken rockwell isn't right about much, but he's right that you should study other visual art first. most of what you'll learn from photography books is technique, which is often relatively unimportant
to make interesting photos you need to have interesting life. work on that while you read a wide spectrum of books, fiction and not. explore, grow, dig, experiment and create. find other artists and discuss but question and reject 90%. SEEK and don't settle. there are like 10 interesting and original photographers in the world right now and none of them wrote any books, guess how many interesting photo books are the in existence lol

>GOD TIER
photobooks, real photo books. not a book with photos inside, but a whole conceptual corpus, from the way its bound to the content itself. here are classics like Egglestons Guide, Koudelkas Gypsies, Shores American Surfaces, Moriyamas Farewell Photography, DiCorcias Hustlers, Soths Dog Days
>DECENT TIER
introductory books like Magnum Magnum, Magnum°
they have a cool share of photos, but arent conceptual works, think of a "greatest hits" of photography, nice for an introduction but only so much can be had from spare photos.
author compilations
again the greatest hits thing, but under a name
some can be excellent as retrospective, like Dijkstras Portraits
>DONT BOTHER WITH IT TIER
books on "composition"
books with titles like "HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA", "101 PHOTOSHOP TIPS FOR EYE POPPING AND ASS GAPING IMAGES"
>GARBAGE TIER
anything by hacks who never held a camera like Sontag, Barthes
>>2987473
>photobooks
they're called "monographs", pleb.
other than that, i agree wholeheartedly with your post.
>>2987481
not in my language, fag ass. thanks for the gold, though.
>>2987484
in any language, lard tits.
does sony make photo books?
>>2987473
If there's a book about gaping asses with your images then I am definitely interested.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson
Is there an pdf archive or something like that with those "godtier" monographs?
>read
You can read pictures?
OP, the non-meme answer is exhibition catalogues. Monographs are okay but they're mostly role-playing. Also by the time a photographer has reached a point where they would be meriting of a monograph, there will invariably be overdetermining commercial and ideological interests entangled in any resulting production about their career. When it's a matter of congealing the established, read marketable, narrative, there is no limit to the amount of revisionism and sophistical rhetoric liable to be included.

>putting Barthes on the same level as Sontag
bitch please

>>2987751

exhibition catalogues are pieces of shit with small photos and no consideration to aesthetics. only wanna be curators and deluded hipsters would put them on the top. consider killing yourself asap, buddy.
>>2987760
No i dont you normie fuck. Stop being so vague and say what you mean.
>>2987785
If you can't deduce what I meant then you're basically retarded.
>hurr what are context clues.
What did you want me to say instead? Must look photography books? Also there are books on the topic of photography that have a magical thing called text.

I never thought someone would have saved this pic. Looking back on it, I wish I could have gotten the focus more clearly on the rain drops. At the time I was just fiddling with my settings.

saw the 3dprk one. cool as all shit. how do you like it?
>>2990566
I'm really impressed by how the pictures translate through the 3d viewer is absolutely stunning. i would kill to find out what camera he used.
>>2990571
i have fucked eyes so ill never experience such 3d, but im freaking out by the concept alone, even jelly. saw the small sample photos and they look very good and clean, i dont recall seeing such quality from the usual suspects. maybe is one of those rare high end stereo cameras, or, even more interesting, a modern one made in china by a camera artisan ( i have seen some guys doing some stunning all mechanical, all metal cameras from china)
>>2990571
btw, no need to kill anyone, how about you ask the author?
>>2990576
i wear glasses and they work great not sure what you mean by fucked eyes but I'm sure you can see it just perfectly.
I've never read it but I've heard it recommended alot. Stunning digital photography. Like every YouTube video on one channel pitches it.
