This is the Film General Thread, aka FGT.
It's a place for you to post your film snapshits without flushing them down the Recent Photo Toilet.
>just posting in the FGT doesn't make you gay, unless you shoot half-frame
It is OK to ask about gear in this thread.
That image was shot on my Fuji GW690II and Velvia 50.
This one is also Velvia 50, but it's more thought out than the first shot. I had to take it in a rush, as the sun was setting fast.

Thank you. This one is Portra 160. Awesome film for this kind of setting.
A film general thread starting off with wonderful photos, I love it.

How does the slide look on the light table? I would love to see a drum scan to get the shadows out of it, you did a perfect job with not getting the sky to blow out.

Love em too, especially the snow scene. Wonderful use of Portra. Did you post on here some time ago with stuff from that location? Like several years ago, that mountain looks familiar.

>>2986676
Thank you Alex.
This is actually a drumscanned slide with 100% shadow recovery in LR. The scan holds the same amount of detail as the slide imho. Unfortunately I shot this handheld as I didn't really plan shooting. It's from the deck at my parents house.
So the Portra and the other Velvia shot is from a location I've shot before, I'll attach the picture.
I much prefer the ones I posted to this.

This one makes me a little claustrophobic. I just want to move my head up a little and see a smidge more sky. A slightly wider lens would have worked well here, but that's probably my odd personal preference talking

Medium format is school portrait tier and large format is all new age folk hymn album cover tier landscape photography.
Last one from my autumn trip. It's shot on Fuji 160Pro NS. The sky is a bit fucked, I'll have a go at it tomorrow when I've slept better

How come your white point is so low here? Surely the light in the background should be brighter.
Also, what'd you soup this 400s in?
Going to ask here again, I want to get into B&W 120 film and developing it on my own since developing it at a lab costs a fuckton (Australia) and scanning it costs something like $3 per frame, but I can't figure out scanning it myself. I dont have the money for a proper scanner and my only DSLR is an ancient Pentax *Ist D from 2003 so I dont think it would work for DSLR scanning, Anybody have any advice for me?

1 Buy a new DSLR
2 Buy a flatbed to get the job done in the meantime
3 Don't shoot medium format until you can afford scanning
4 Say fuck it to scanning and just shoot without the digitization part (which can happen later when you can afford it).
Choose your own adventure.

If you're a poorfag or a pleb, it's great.
If you're not a poorfag, buy a Contax. If you're not a pleb, buy a Bronica ETRS/Mamiya 645.

been looking at the GX617 too but like you say it be good to have movements.. but i heard about the lens issues that they're not well built. The cheapest 6x17 i saw was the G617 and the vanilla linhof technorama but cost wise im not sure if a 4x5 graflox with a 6x17 back might be a cheaper option.

>but i heard about the lens issues that they're not well built.
They're not poorly built. I'd say high end, but not leica/linhof quality. I only have the 90mm, but the guard rails protects it well and the optics very, very good.

Pick subject. Frame subject. Set exposure. Focus. Release shutter. Shoot what you want. If you haven't tried a lot of centred shots, you may want to try that with 6x6.

It's all about symmetry and balance. With 35mm unbalanced compositions work well because the rectangular shaped frame assists in balancing out the composition. With square, the frame will give no further assistance in balancing things out. This is why centered shots generally work well. The overall goal is to create a balance that results in an image that isn't heavily biased to a particular side.
>>2987295
been considering super low iso shooting bw film.
but that would mean i need to learn to develop.
>>2987208 #
>>2987339 #
Another example. Putting your subject off center is totally do able. Try not to fall into the CENTER EVERYTHING trap with 6x6, as that happens easily.
In this shot the two people on the left are balanced out by the tankers on the right. Without the tankers I think the shit would be out of balance and awkward.
>>2987353
i see your point in the first one, but the bottom half on this one couldve been cut and it wouldve improved it tenfold.
>>2987353
>Try not to fall into the CENTER EVERYTHING trap with 6x6
Except that the camera centres everything for you, because the tight bastards designing lenses for them realised the square format was payday when they could get away with a bare minimum of image circle and still "cover" the frame.
What the fuck is this vignette? As if you're going to put anything outside the centre of the frame.
What's /p/'s favorite B&W paper?
I usually print on Ilford RC papers in the satin finish, but I went shopping last week and they were out of stock so I decided I'll try some Foma papers for a change.
The base feels a little bit cheaper, the Fomaspeed Variant in matte finish kind of resembles Ilford papers in the pearl finish, except they feel a little bit lighter and curl more after drying. The base is also very slightly colder. But there is really something about the tonality... I guess Ilford papers must have some almost ideal linear density curve, but the midtones on the Foma papers really do have this elusive film look in the midtones. They also respond nicely to toning.

In general it's like this: scan, orient, rotate, crop, apply lens correction, invert if negative, exposure, black/white/grey point. Add whitebalance after exposure for colour film. Paste this stack (sans orient, crop, rotate) over all the images in the roll to get a good "contact sheet" style of overview.
Per image, do masked tone curves and what-not until your artistic vision is met. Some like to apply stuff like sharpening, local contrast, smoothing to continuous-tone areas, and whatever else that's not specific to digital that you want to use. (e.g. tonemapping and raw denoise will be unavailable.)
All of this wrt Darktable btw.

Words of wisdom from Dipshit.
When you know you are going to shoot in a dark area, it is unwise to think that purchasing the highest speed film you can find and pushing it beyond limits to avoid using a flash will yield decent results. Just use a fucking flash.

Sure, you're having trouble seeing it there because both frames are very limited in colour. Any XA2 users want to shed some light on focusing? It seems the middle of the focus scale is ~8ft focus distance, with the far side of the focus scale being infinity. Is it safe to say if anything is say, 10+ ft away I might as well set the scale focus to infinity (assuming enough light to let the camera select f5.6 or smaller)?

I tried some printing again and it was pretty fun but I'm having some issues with very short exposure times using multigrade paper. I already have the lens on the enlarger stopped down as far as it will go but some exposures are very short 1 or 2 seconds so not enough time to dodge/burn.
This is the plebiest question but will using ND filters or a dimmer help me out in getting a longer print? Any tricks I may be missing?

120 backing paper is ~.10mm thick. Film base thickness varies between .098mm to .110mm depending on the film (or at least the ones I've bothered to look up). So really we're talking about a ~.090mm guaranteed difference in thickness between 120 and 220 film.
Also, it's been proven over on Apug that some cameras with rotating pressure plates don't change the film plane distance at all. The rotation changes the spacing of the film since thickness affects frame spacing as the film is wound from one spook to another.

I must admit you are right. I use an old fashioned ferrotyping dryer and it still takes ages and ages to finish a single print. But as I am a little bit of an insomniac( hence why I am on /p/ at 4 am California time) I will spend six or seven hours in my home darkroom churning out print after print. The only issue is that I can only ferrotype four prints at once in my two dryers and a backlog of prints starts building up in my print washer which also takes forever with fiber paper
Just what is it that gives film photographs this oil painting like quality?

I get that it must be stressful raising someone elses children, especially on Christmas eve. The pressures of the modern family man or woman know no bounds. Your neighbours are posting notes through your door to stop listening to that "anime shit" in the middle of the night while developing prints in your darkroom. You're annoyed because you double exposed an image in your film holder by accident and ruined what could have been a great shot (it was no happy accident!). You are looking at your bank account and you see less money in your accountant than it costs to get potatoes for dinner tomorrow. Your wallet is aching at the festive time and you don't want to tell your partner that if they don't get a job you may have to move to a studio apartment, you sure as hell never wanted to be /that/ photographer and you don't want a child invading your personal space, never mind one that isn't your own.
That's no reason to go badmouthing a stupid question in the fgt though. It could be worse, the anon could have made his own thread just to ask the question. They could have left out which lens and film they were going to bring. It was a festive question allowing for some discussion in the dead season of religious holidays celebrated worldwide. Try and be a little more tolerant and maybe you may find some good fortune in the coming days. I believe in you!

I'd probably take the 'blad (fuck off >>2988672 if you don't like it then filter it you triggered hypocritical warrior of justice). Shorter lens, wider depth of field, potentially less motion blur from mirror slap and 'dem leaf shutters mmmmmmmmmmm.
Gonna be taking a few point and shits for my cousins kids to use at Christmas dinner tomorrow, should be pretty fun.
>>2988785
Indoors, no flash, slow medium format lens that will be shot wide open at subjects that are at close focus, 400 speed film. Seriously m8, why bother? Every other person at this gathering with a cell phone is going to take better quality photos than you will with this setup, and they are going to be quick to point it out to you. Invest in some lighting and take quality photos with that gear.

did some darkroom printing for the first time, am I retarded or does it take everyone 30+ minutes to get a decent print dialed in?
any printing advice welcome
Is pic related any good? I used to have a Plustek OpticFilm 7200 and it was pretty pretty pretty nice.
I recently got a couple of rolls of MF film for free. They haven't been stored in any special way, and are about 10 years expired judging from the ones that the text isn't worn out from. No problem, I've shot stuff like that and overexposing by a stop works just fine unless it's fast.
Among them was one roll of slide though. I don't know what it is because all the text is worn out from the pack, but since it's blue and yellow I'm quite sure it's Ektachrome. My question is though, what should I rate it as? Overexposing by one stop for slide sounds dangerous.

Color neg can easily handle 6+ stops overexposure. Most consumer film scanners start to fail at picking up detail around 3+ overexposure even though it's still there. With a good scanner you can rescue details way past 6 stops.
Should I nab a near mint Olympus 35 SP as my first film camera? It's 190$ right now.
i was directed here from the gear thread so maybe this is a better place to ask, i recently got an old japanese Mamiya MSX 1000 camera, saved it from being thrown out because i thought it looked cool

I purchased a d3300 about one year ago, and while I've enjoyed learning photography this way, it doesn't have any of the intimacy I had expected. I feel that shooting film would be the solution for this, along with a smaller camera than mine (which has a 18-140 on it) such that I would be more inclined to carry it around wherever I go. Any suggestions on a camera that could fit my purpose? I may or may not sell my current kit depending on whether I find an alternative or not. Thanks for any help, lads.
Does anyone know the differences between the primefilm xa and xe? Can't find anything besides the xe being smaller and 200dpi less

Where can I get my film developed for super cheap? I've been using wal-mart's send out service which is about $10 for a full roll of prints and scans, no negs. Is there a cheaper option? I just want negs and scans. Hell, even just scans if it's any cheaper.
>>2990369
I can help you with this but first I need some information. How much do you value your own time and the time of others?
>>2990369
there's nothing cheaper, but you might as well spend the same somewhere else and keep the negatives? millers, thedarkroom, etc.

This is kind of a silly/dumb question but I got a film camera (Nikon FA) for Christmas and I dont have batteries for it yet however it does have a manual mode that works without batteries.
However, the shutter speed is locked at 1/250 in this mode. On a bright sunny day with a locked shutter speed of 1/250 and a film ISO of 400 (Kodak T-Max 400), what should I set the aperture to? The lens is a Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8. Smallest aperture is f/22
>>2990656
google sunny 16. not a dumb question, all film photogs should learn to read light and do the mental calculations to get correct exposures, not hard at all, just practice. also there are smartphone apps for that.

will overexposing remove the grain or just bring back some colour depth?
thanks for the reply by the way. that's a nice shot. I think you're right and I should stick to nice cold fresh stuff.
do you think it's best to shoot a whole roll in one day rather than leave it sitting in the camera partially shot, then?
this is a shot I took with new Portra 400, is it also underexposed?
>>2993562
>>2993562
Basically, old film becomes less sensitive to light. So overexposing recalibrated your exposures for the less sensitive film. To put it extremely simply, that 20 year old Kodak Gold 400 probably has the sensitivity of 100 iso now. Since c41 films tend to get quite grainy when underexposed this results in it looking grainy, as you underexposed the toll by shooting it at 400.
Don't worry about leaving film in a camera. That shit is fine. It's really once we are talking in term of years in unknown temperatures that expired film becomes sketchy.
That Portra shot of yours looks great!
>>2993569

No worries dude.
Fog looks so good on Portra. Shoot lots and post up the results!
IG is mctomch, my feed is pretty hit and miss though (I post lots of random shit).
>>2993082
No. Almost all B/W films have a slight purple tinge to them. It's even stronger on chromogenic B/W films, such as XP2. It will have no effect on your prints or scans, unless you either don't know what you're doing or are printing to color paper.
Read about film rules of thumb, especially fixing. Some people recommend pre-rinses, but they have no effect on the intensity of the violet.
>>2993656
scanning is not a problem. i just don't know if I should already throw away this fixer and get a fresh one or keep using it (I used it for like 10 films)
>>2993439
Hm. Yeah, it's always as soon as I develop it. The curl isn't developing later on. It occurs immediately after I hang it to dry. I notice that on a few films (Acros, etc.) it curls initially, and then later straightens as it continues to dry, while most of the cheap film I use, like Arista film and a few others, curls and never uncurls.
>>2993680
Now we're getting into how much volume of liquid you have.
Generally, a liter(around one quart) would work for around 30 36exp rolls, maybe more. The deal is, you'll need to increase the fix and dev times a few seconds every two rolls developed.
>>2993701
thanks a lot anon
>>2993685
I find that ilford and rollei films dry practically dead straight.
Fuji curls a bit, but I can deal because it's towards the film base.
Kodak's the real bitch though, because it curls the most, and the wrong way.
So I get newtons rings on my scans, unless I flip the film and scan it backwards.
That's what normally have to roll up backwards and leave in the sun.
>>2993804
That's Kodak C41, btw.
B&W's are fine.
