But there's no metering...
>>2986581
A mix of Canon and Nikon. Canon has it right with the buttons on the right side where you'll always have your hand. Where they do it wrong is dial placement and how the buttons work (press once and dial, instead of press and dial).
Nikon has the dials in the right place, and the buttons work the way I like them too. Also no combining of functions on a button. WB and Metering are separate, not combined and dial dependent. Unfortunately most of the non-primary buttons are on the top left side, making it unwieldy to use them when shooting big lenses unsupported while in a shooting position. Thankfully, it still means you have the AF button at the mount in your left hand, and on the right two dials and 2 buttons (aperture/shutter or in A/S mode, the other dial is exposure comp, video button (reprogrammable), exposure comp button)
I say Nikon should also bring back the aperture ring. I find it easier to count stops that way. Also moar AF-on buttons, and AF joysticks with buttons. Being able to configure a D500 to have 3 buttons (AF-On, stick, and Fn) as AF-On+3 different AF modes each is pretty cool.
>>2986609
What does metering have to do with ergonomics? Also git gud, sunny 16 (moar like 11), external light meter, your phone.
>>2986618
>no meter
>sunny 16 (moar like 11)
>not controlling aperture and adjusting shutter speed to expose
If you have no meter you're obviously not shooting moving stuff so there's no point in fixing shutter speed
I have a few expendable bucks right now ($250) what are some older camera around that range that are still okay. I'm waiting until I get a new job to get the D7200, but I'm itching to shoot with a DSLR. Is this a good deal?
>>2986622
You could get a D3100 (maybe D3200) to learn the basics on for now. Then when you upgrade, you'll wonder how you ever dealt with the piece of shit that is Nikon entry level bodies. Good news is that the camera has nowhere else to depreciate to.
>>2986619
>not controlling shutter speed and adjusting aperture to match
Have fun shooting at 1/60 and f16.
>>2986622
I've seen D7000s on CL right around the $250 mark, and even if they're above, you could try to talk the seller down.
As a previous D3100 owner, the lack of in body AF motor hampered me in using older budget lenses, and the size was very small as well. I think the D7000 hits a good spot for IQ, price, and full backwards compatibility, which is important on a budget.
Guys, important purchasing question.
I need a compact and I narrowed it down to 2 options here.
LX100 because of the sweet 100mbps video or Nikon dl24-58 because no optical low pass filter for sweet sweet sharp pictures.
I know the lx100 has a bigger sensor (even if not all in use) but the nikon looks so tempting.

Faster shooting, less tweaking, no fiddling.
Technicalities don't get in the way.

Was using my 700d in around 0c degrees and it will no longer focus via the optical viewfinder nor take pictures in manual focus.

Planning on 6+ months of travel soon. As much as I loooovveeeee my Bronica SQ-A I think it may be a bit too bulky. What's a good, smaller 6x6 camera that'd be good for travel? I'm fine with sticking to one lens in the 65mm-80mm range. Multiple backs would be nice, but I don't think I can get that in a package smaller than the SQ-A.
I've also owned a Mamiya 6 before and while it's a great camera, I didn't enjoy it much. Thinking a nice TLR would be better.

D300 is still pretty solid at lower ISO, I'm not really a fan of its output though. It's hard for me to get pleasing colors out of it in post but YMMV. The body itself is great though, fuck the D3x00 and the 5x00.

What's wrong with your colors? My color output is fine with my D200, I do usually punch up the colors in post though. I'm looking at used D600s to replace it.
The difference in quality between these and the 3/5X00 bodies is indeed significant though.

TLR, which is still fairly bulky or Mamiya 6.
There's really not much else 6x6 that fits your needs.
Sup /p/, I just bought my first strobe (pic related) and I noticed that during some test flashes, it would randomly just flash ALL BLUE as if my white balance was hugely out of whack. Like, ONLY BLUE.
I think it had something to do with my shutter speed, I guess the flash has different temperatures across its duration but the sum of the entire duration is "flash white", but it happened in the 1/100 margin and I did test the HSS up to 1/8000 flawlessly.
What could it be? I'll try to make it happen again so I can be clearer. By the way I tried googling but all I get is stupid fucks messing up their WB - my white balance was set to "flash" for all test pictures, shooting through a Godox trigger.

That was on my 5d2
just tried on my 7d, and it fucked up ONCE. But it proves it's not the camera.
Again, as soon as I'm even 1/3 of aperture stopped down from full open, it's fine.
Maybe it's fucky trigger firmware that doesn't synch properly. I have no idea, but it's too strange to be a real fault and not some kind of bug.
There's no ttl involved, it's fully manual, I am at a loss here. Weirdest shit ever.
>>2986745
>no TTL involved
So you aren't varying the power setting of the strobe at all?

Nope, stuck at the same setting for all shots. I just take consecutive shots and that happens, but stops happening as soon as:
>I use a shutter speed below 1/125
>happens really rarely past 1/250
>doesn't seem to happen at 1/200
>i stop down even 1/3 of a stop from wide open (es. from 1.4 to 1.6, even. I tried on three lenses and all three would get that only wide open)
I could completely use the flash like this, but, it's WEIRD AS FUCK. I'm new to strobes and I have zero idea what could do this. I was certain it had to do with flash duration, but since it changes with aperture too, I have no idea.

I moved white balance to Kelvins and now it's spot on on all shots.
In all these years I thought the presets were just presets.
So what happened? I left it on flash balance, but this somehow made the strobe, trigger or camera go fucky with some specific settings. I just took 20 consecutive shots on Kelvin balance and it went smooth as butter. How the hell does this happen?
>>2986754

Ok, sure, but ergonomics covers the quality of operation the camera. Metering falls under automation, like autofocus. How you control the autofocus (or metering) would fall under ergonomics.

I'm saying the sunny 16 rule works out closer to sunny 11 in most of the world that isn't a sunburnt shithole. Assuming that, you're saying that you should aperture priority the sunny 16 rule, giving you 1/60 f16 under EV15 daylight.

The D200 has a great sensor for nice colors, I loved what my D80 (rip) and D60 gave me. I really wish they stuck with LBCAST black magic from the D2H because it gave really nice colors with great sharpness. I actually prefer the 4.1 great megapixels to the 12 mediocre megapixels. It's just too bad they couldn't get the noise under control, but such is life with first generation experimental tech...

Canon 70-200mm f2.8L or the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 depending on your budget and preference. You need to bin the EF 70-300 f4-5.6, that's not cut out for anything other than bright light pictures of airplanes really.
The 70-200mm f2.8 Tamron is a nice lens, they pulled out the stops for it and it actually competes with the Canon L. See: https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EF70-200mm-f28L-IS-II-USM-versus-Sigma-70-200mm-F28-EX-DG-APOMacro-HSM-II-Canon-versus-Tamron-SP-70-200mm-F28-Di-VC-USD-Canon__408_0_607_0_1027_0
Landscape is tough to do right on a budget but if you can afford it the Canon 11-24mm F4 L is a smashing lens, but for people of budget there is little in that range. I really enjoy my Sigma 20mm F1.4 though.
Are there any good printers out there that can make decent sized prints without fucking my wallet? Ideally 300 USD would be the most I'd pay. What printers use ink thats not way over priced

Buying a printer is dumb. It is always more cost effective to get your prints done professionally. They are always going to be higher quality too. I pay $12CAD for 12x18 prints on Fuji crystal. There's no way I could do better than that owning my own printer.

Well it's simple. The film needs to be transported vertically, not horizontally. You wanted a compact MF camera, not one with a film back. I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination consider a system camera compact and portable. If it doesn't have a film back, it's probably going to transport horizontally due to packaging reasons.
Given that, there probably are 6x4.5 cameras that transport vertically and fold up nicely. But they're not common enough for me to know about them.
>>2986839
I appreciate the effort dude, but horizontal film transport is exactly what I want. Dunno what got you confused in my previous posts, but yeah:
>landscape orientation
Meaning taking a picture gives me an image that has the longer sides horizontal and the shorter sides vertical.
>Don't want camera like the Bronica RFs that shoot vertically
There are tons of 6x4.5 cameras that shoot horizontally. I juat have never bothered researching them since I never thought I'd go smaller than 6x6.
>>2986848
Just so we're clear here, you understand that 120 film shot with a 6x4.5 frame in a horizontal transport camera will always result in a portrait orientation picture?
Or am I being retarded here?

You could go full Bronica and get a ETRSi. But any system camera would definitely be too large.
You didn't like the Mamiya 6, but what about you didn't like? The manual focus rangefinder aspect? I'm guessing shooting 6x7s and 6x9s on the Fuji GW/GSW cameras would be out of the question. What about the GA645? You'd have to hold it like a gangsta, but it's a folding autofocus MF point and shoot with manual control override.

Don't think there'd be much of a size advantage grabbing an ETRS over my SQ-A.
The GA645 looks pretty damn nice actually. I was planning on shooting mostly e6, think it'd be okay with handling that? They are cheap as fuck where I live, looks like I can get into one for under $200.
>You didn't like the Mamiya 6, but what about you didn't like? The manual focus rangefinder aspect?
Exactly. I think for all manual I want a nice ground glass and split prism. Anything less feels a bit removed.
>>2986881
>Don't think there'd be much of a size advantage grabbing an ETRS over my SQ-A.
Almost none at all. Like I said the Mamiya 6 is kinda the most compact option along with a TLR unless you find a nice 6x6 folder (not likely). The folders will all have the same problem as the 6 had for you.
On the SLR front, a hassy is a little smaller, but overall more expensive and a retarded trade up.
I'd suggest going digipleb for size and get yourself a premium compact taking alongside the SQ but that depends on how much you hate digishit.
>I was planning on shooting mostly e6, think it'd be okay with handling that? They are cheap as fuck where I live, looks like I can get into one for under $200.
The meters on Fuji's are usually pretty good, so good that it's one of the only cameras I trust to shoot in AP with compensation (xpan). The GA645 seems to at least have a manual mode if you get a later one so you'll still be able to meter.
>>2986883
>I'd suggest going digipleb for size and get yourself a premium compact taking alongside the SQ but that depends on how much you hate digishit.
I don't mind digishit at all. I just want to have the option of shooting film when special situations arise. The SQ-A has gone on numerous long-term trips with me. It's just a bit slow to use and I've been getting into more fast paced shooting lately with 35mm, so I was hoping to find a medium format camera that could lead to a similar style of shooting. I also have an A7 matched with a 35mm lens.
Right now I'm considering the following options
Most bulk. I have the A7 covering low light, the SQ-A covering medium format, and the Epic covering the times I don't want to carry a camera. I typically don't like having a fuck ton of gear with me (more options doesn't mean better) so this probably won't happen.
>A7 + 35mm
>Bronica SQ-A + 80mm
>Stylus Epic
Forego digital and go 100% film. Basically kiss low light goodbye, but I could stock on up Natura 1600 for the Epic. I've done many trips 100% film so that doesn't bother me much, but I do know the A7 would be nicely flexible.
>Bronica SQ-A + 80mm
>Stylus Epic
Find a more compact medium format camera and basically replace the SQ-A with it.
>????? fixed lens medium format camera
>A7+ 35mm
>Stylus Epic
Least bulk. Flexibility with the A7 and still able to flip through a binder of 35mm shots long after the trip (my favorite part about film).
>A7 + 35mm
>Stylus Epic
Guess the last option is what you're suggesting. Grab a compact digital p&s (if there's one with awesome low light capabilities, full manual controls, and is the size of the Canon S100 I'm down) and pair that with the SQ-A. Flexibility covered, medium format covered.
>Digi compact
>SQ-A
>Stylus Epic because it's size is negligible.

Best bang for buck birding rig from scratch?
How the fuck do I get a normal / wide walkaround prime for my canon APS-C?
(35mm or 50mm equalv.)
The only APS-C prime I know of is:
The sigma 30mm f1.4 "art", which has focus issues
The canon 24mm f2.8, which is slow
Then nothing else
what the hell
Do I really need to haul around a huge 28mm FF prime or something?
I'm going to Cuba for a week tomorrow.
Taking my 5Dmk4, but can't decide which lens to bring: 24-105 f/4L or Sigma 50 f/1.4 art.
The 24-105 is more versatile for daytime walkabout and it's a little bit lighter, but the Sigma is also a decent focal length (I tend to shoot around 50mm on the zoom anyway) with the added few stops for low-light situations, of which I think there will be a few. I'd take both but honestly can't be bothered to lug two lenses around or risk having one stolen from my hotel room. What do you guys think?
>>2987172
Sigma 35mm Art is an excellent lens, and focusing can be adjusted with the dock, but afaik it is the 50 that has the most problems with this. It converts to roundabout 50mm on APS-C and you can continue to use it if you upgrade to fullframe, so I'd say it's a decent investment

>>2987186
Why would you bring it to leave in your hotel room? Put it in your bag with your camera and other lens when you go out. After all the point is to take it along so you have it to shoot photos with. If you weren't willing to do that you wouldn't have an interchangeable-lens camera.
>>2987189
Fair point. I'm just trying to be as minimalistic as possible as it's a short stay, but may take both in the end.
>>2987191
If you're determined to take just one, take the zoom. I always do. Primes for local photos. Zooms for abroad. I'm a hobbyist and nobody looks at my pictures except me and whoever wants to look at them, and nobody gives a shit about sharpness except me. And plus most don't know a good picture from their ringpiece so just consider practicality and piece of mind if that's more important than a slightly nicer shot.

I have had D3300 /w normal zoom, telezoom, and 35mm 1.8 for two years
I'm wanting the 85mm 1.8 for shooting people, and I also want to upgrade the body because the 15 AF points seriously limit composition when shooting wide open (thinking D7000 series or D750)
Problem is I think I'd rather be Sony, and the considered purchases are so big compared to my current gear that I might as well switch if it's right for me
I like the general mirrorless advantages: Live preview (w/ zebra-striping, focus-peaking etc.), and feature-detection AF. These are things where the tacked-on LV in DSLRs will never rival mirrorless
I don't like the size of Sony, but the real drawback is the shitty lens selection. I don't care that mirrorless cameras may match comparably priced DSLRs if I have to pay twice as much for a lens. It's a problem that's probably gonna go away in a few years, but I don't wanna be an early-adopter cuck wasting his money in the meantime
What do I do, /p/ - Photogear?

It is two generations old.
Even so, as far as the value goes it can't be beat. Nothing comes close without costing double.
The main issue with it, is that it lacks the pdaf of later models, meaning third party lenses don't focus as fast. Especially in low light.

7D2+telephoto (70-300 IS, 300/4 IS, 100-400 I) wins on outright bang for buck since its so cheap and capable, but my vote is for a D7200 or D750 (dat Gr AF mode) and a 200-500/5.6 for overall birding capability (subject tracking, zoom range for price, ISO capability, closest focus priority mode from Group AF). Also to look at from Nikon for under or about $1000: AFS 70-300 VR, AFS 300/4, that's it, Nikon made a lot of turd zooms for a while.

>>2987517
DFA 100/2.8 WR is the most recent one, it's good
DFA 100/2.8 non-WR is the same thing without weather sealing and with an aperture ring, get that if you need it
There's a DFA 50/2.8 if you want something shorter
There's an FA 200/4 macro, you can't afford it so forget about that shit.
if you don't give a shit about autofocus because you plan on using a tripod anyway get the Samyang 100/2.8 macro, or one of the manual focus Pentax macros.

What sites should I avoid buying from? There's a lot of bait and switch scams and I'm not trying to go through all that?
Bought an 80-200 2.8 push-pull off local craigslist equivalent for $700 dollarydoos. Its pretty gorgeous for portraits but heavy as shit and autofocus is not ideal for sports which I was hoping to shoot more of. Did I hamstring myself not going balls deep on the newer model 80-200 or even a 70-200 for several times more? I have the money it was more a shock to consider that as a pure hobbyist who does not intend to try be a pro the thought of spending that much on a lens seemed absurd at first. Am I chasing a fairy that is called "unrealistic expectations of autofocus"? Is every missed action shot just going to leave me wondering what if when in reality they'd have possibly let me down as well?

Maybe if you weren't a quick shooting cuck, you'd have done more research and known the 2-ring AF-D is a much faster autofocuser, the AF-S 2.8D is first generation AF-S and prone to motor death, the AF-S VR has bad corners on FX but good on DX, the VRII has loses focal length at close distances, and that all of these lenses are breddy sharp and worth looking at for whatever budget they fit in for you.
Dump the push pull, find a 2-ring (also known as 2-touch).

AF is dick-splitting quick on the 35mm f/2 in good light, and slowpoke tier at EV3 and below. Dunno about any other lens. The battery that came with mine was kind of miserable, but OEM ones from China were much better at like 1/8 the cost (~20 eurobucks for two). Only problem I've had was contact trouble between lens and body, but that seems to have gone away after cleaning the contacts w/ a q-tip.

A D600 replacement is overdue. A D700 replacement has been rumored to be in the wild, touting extra low light capability. A crop sensor D750 is the next logical step for the D7200. Seeing the D5600 and D3400, we'll probably just get a D7020 with Snapbridge and less flash power. RIP Nikon.
Nothing interesting in the patent queue for Nikkors, and it'll be a cold day in hell before we see pancakes and DX primes from Nikon. We'll probably see some FL E updates in the supertelephotos too.

would you like a 50mm lens for your 50mm lens? Should be nice along with the other 50mm lenses.
can anyone here with a leica m8 tell me if they're still worth it or not? thinking of picking one up but i'm not sure if they're outdated or not.
>>2988417
People who buy Leicas aren't people who care about "outdated" or "obsolete."
The M8 has worse dynamic range and low light performance than just about any full frame DSLR or mirrorless camera. You would expect this though because it is old.
If you want
>muh Leica
and have lenses for it, why not? If you're a low light shooter who really wants to pull that image quality in the dark; don't. If you're good at using the gear you have and the Leica is personal preference, it won't make a difference either way until you know whether you like it or not.
>>2987931
AF-S is pretty decent with the lenses I've used on mine. (23 1.4, 56 1.2, 50-230, and 50-140 that I rent when I need it.) AF-C tracking is pretty mediocre but I haven't tried it with the new firmware, and that's supposed to improve it a lot.
Battery life is pretty crummy, there's no getting around that. It's not quite as terrible as it's made out to be, but you'll definitely want a spare or two. At least they're tiny and cheap. (If you buy the third party ones.)
>Canon 5D Mark II
>200k shutter count
Is this a deal breaker?
I currently have a Canon 600D that does everything I need but I don't take it motorcycling because of the bulk and abuse it would suffer in the panniers. Would an M3 be an adequate substitute or even an upgrade?
>>2988329
I'd personally not go below the A6000, because of the AF, flash hotshoe and so on.
Still a cheap camera, and the flash can help to make your dig and dog so much more visible in many situations. The built-in flash isn't half as pretty.
>>2988427
Might be a substitute. Maybe not really an upgrade overall.
It's like fair bit worse Sony A5100 (slower bursts, longer cycle time, worse AF, worse sensor with worse DR and more ISO noise, worse video capabilities, less native lenses...). And the A5100 itself is not a particularly noteworthy camera at this point.
>>2988444
Thanks, I don't have that many lenses DESU but I can't afford a significant upgrade for the next 9 months (saving for a house).

Lucky you that houses and cameras are related that closely where you live.
Anyhow, personally I'd not get it because it just is a worse variant on a not really good A5100, and it costs way too much for that - more than an A6000.
>>2988466
Thanks again. In my market, it's about the same as the A6000, would that be a better choice? I'm not a huge Sony fan because of proprietary shenanigans, I only bought their AX53 because the OIS was so good.
>>2988465
X-trans then. The fact it uses a color filter array means it has interpolation artifacts.
>>2988426
Would be for me.
>>2988469
The A6000 is far better overall.
Even the A5100 is quite a bit better if you ask me.
> I'm not a huge Sony fan because of proprietary shenanigans
But Canon is probably even more proprietary as far as cameras go. Oh sure, Sony runs their ultimately not intended to be open version of Android on their cameras and has proprietary software and stuff, but at least they provide lens mount specifications and an in-camera app API to basically just about any company who'll agree to the licensing.
Little as that may be, it is still better than Canon.
Even apart from cameras, Canon chips printer ink and has proprietary almost everything, that's not really any better than Sony's other divisions.
>>2988478
Thanks yet again. I guess my impression of Sony was tainted by the chipped handycam batteries from back in the miniDV days.
Anyone have any recommendations on their favorite/best MFT lens? I need a new lens for my Blackmagic, yet am on a budget.
do you guys see any difference with UV lenses while doing wilderness/landscape photography?
Just bought a Fuii Graphite Silver X-T1. Looking for camera straps. Are the gordy camera straps any good?
>>2987931
If you already own lenses, it's fine. Autofocus is a bit faster than the X-T10 but not much. It's well balanced for some of the larger lenses 56/1.2 etc.
Battery life is almost non existent, it's 1st party batteries or bust, third parties can't output the required voltage for long enough to be used. There was supposedly a new generation of batteries coming with the X-T2 but I haven't seen them around yet or tried 'em.
As for my opinion. I have two issues with it, one you will probably experience, the other you probably won't.
The ISO/SS dial is shit. Absolute shit. It's fine if you're a pleb who uses aperture priority but chances are that if you're looking for a digital camera with framelines and a shutter speed dial, you're probably not the type of goyim shooting in aperture priority. The biggest issue is that to date there's still no firmware option to allow you to change ISO via a FN button like other X series cameras, so you'll continue to knock your SS out of alignment every time you want to change it. Hands down this is my biggest problem with the camera.
My WR failed on me so my opinion's pretty low regarding build quality. This ain't your mommas qt pentax weather sealing, this is splash resistance :^)
>>2988559

>>2988562
I bought my X-T1 used. No strap included.
>>2988561
It's for pussy assed morons. In truth there's only a few things wrong with it but this is specifically a case where you're using it with a camera where one of the only unique features is having a dedicated shutter speed dial. Also placing the ISO dial on it was a massive case of dropping the ball, no matter how much it makes fuji retrobois cream their pants because omg it's just like my voigtlander ss dial!
>>2988566
Buy the cheapest strap you can find nerd. Even a pentax one will do. If you're too scared to do that, phone up the shitter who sold you his/her/it's broken X-T1 and ask what the fuck he/she/it did with the strap.
If you haven't guessed yet, it's just a strap m80, real great if you love having your camera really high up and around your neck or having it knock you on or just below the elbow all day. There are better straps out there for your money that aren't aimed at posers.

There is nothing wrong with aperture priority. It's the ideal mode, as you set an aperture to control depth of field and let the camera set shutter speed to suit the exposure. Only an elitist faggot would think anything is wrong with aperture priority. Sorry to break it to you.
>>2988659
I'd prefer wider and go with the 20mm. Also consider the Tamron 15-30mm.
And there are some Samyangs -current and announced for the near future- that should be very nice, too.

The Loxia 21mm is certainly great. But pricey and f/2.8. So yea, he might want the Sigma Art even on a Sony.
I am just starting, and have pic related in my hands.
Any must-get lenses for this? I am planning to use it for taking urban landscape pictures, and portraits, occasionally.
Also, any suggestions for a good BW and color film? (most of my pictures will probably be taken on afternoon/night)

Keep on shooting those weddings in aperture priority until one day your camera fails on you. It's alright, you've got other crutches to help you get through it after all. After all, who needs a camera to set their exposure when you can just chimp.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be the best at what you do, bub. Take some pride in your work.
>>2988693
Not really.
Of course they're just no match for good modern glass in most cases, but I guess one has to acknowledge that a full set of $800-2k+ glass is not something easily in reach for most people.
I still would recommend using 1-3 pieces of higher-end modern glass for your most used focal lengths if you're a hobbyist or occasional professional. But if the other glass is old or low end, that's just a compromise that kinda needed to be made to not necessitate greater sacrifices elsewhere.
>>2988676
>There is nothing wrong with aperture priority.
true

Aperture priority is for controlling aperture with having everything else on auto. Using it for everything is stupid. You want to set a desired DoF you use Av mode, you want to set something else you use a different mode.
When you want to set consecutive exposures you use manual or manual with auto ISO if you can't be arsed about choosing ISO.
Read Understanding Exposure from Bryan Peterson so you can have an idea how to control your photos, DoF and motion etc...

Keep in mind the a6000 has overheat issues when recording long videos in hot weather. It does have a larger sensor though, so you will get considerably better performance in.low light.
