I was taking a walk through the industrial part of town on a foggy night yesterday, cause bored
And the scenery there is quite nice to make pics of
I didn't have my camera with me, so I took some crappy cellphone pics to try some angles and shit
I'm gonna head out there again tomorrow with my canon because I saw quite some awesome things to shoot
Thing is, I have no experience whatsoever shooting in the dark
So far I've done some portraits, some pets or some daytime events like weddings and shit, which is, to be fair, easy as fuck
I'm particularly interested in capturing the rays of light, not necessarily the objects. Should I keep the shutter time low? Or rather high? Should I bring my tripod for stability if I need to keep the shutter time high? And what about ISO? I really wanna capture the kind of "god rays" thing, since it's gonna be foggy as fuck tomorrow. Pic related, it's a shitty cellphone pic I took. It's the only one under 5MB, I can't be fucked to resize them

you're trying too hard

I look forward to seeing what you can get, looks like an interesting place, but yeah the cellphone pic sucks.

cant be fucked to help you, pal.

my biggest suggestion is to go and be able to spend a decent amount of time without worrying about when you've got to leave. The longer you're there and the more time you spend experimenting the better your shots will become.
Pay close attention to how you frame the light sources and what is illuminated by them. This seems like ridiculously insipid advice but if you've mainly focused on portraiture before now you're going to find that the optimal way you frame in this environment is very different from that.
I honestly can't tell from your picture exactly what you're dealing with so I don't have a ton of technical advice. If your camera handles high ISOs well (as in it doesn't get grainy/noisy easily) then crank ISO up and avoid having to utilize longer exposures with a tripod.
If you want to capture an element of time passing or if it's just too dark then bring a tripod and get some long exposures.

well here you go then

this is a tree illuminated by an industrial light from behind
The darkness of the objects is of no concern
I just want to photograph the direction of rays in the fog
Doesn't really matter if anything is actually illuminated or not
That's why I think I should go with a short shutter time

Op here again, gonna post some more of what I got with my cellphone
I want to get the same pics from the same position with my canon, but I want to get better shots obviously
Again, it's the rays that are the most interesting to me

This one is a little different
There's this huge estate about a mile from the industrial area
It has a castle-like house, with an appropriate yard and a huge christmas tree (the one with the lights). From a distance, it made some kind of spectacle in the fog so I found it suitable for my god ray collection
I just need to go back with my canon to capture this correctly
Just need to figure out how

light rays through fog can be tricky. often the camera will not pick it up as clearly as you can see it with your eyes. Try varying exposures and see which one helps the rays pop out more. The density of the fog is also huge factor.
Good luck!!

This is neat. I'd love to see the light hinting at other things in the shadows to the left and right

I tried editing it a little to enhance the visibility of the lights
I also removed the lights on the side to make it a little more eerie
