I didn't take that photo, I just edited it, if that isn't somehow clear yet. I can't "remove" vignetting. I can fix the banding problems, though, which were already there before my editing.

Looks crisper.

People hate USM - mainly because it squashes the highlights and shadows, but if you act to protect them before you apply those values (by bolstering them in "highlights and shadows" and curves) you can bring out a lot of details in low contrast images.

In your case the whole image is midtones so the S&H arent badly affected either way.

If by protect you mean make sure that the blue indicator lights dont show up anywhere before I make the unsharp mask then yeah i made sure to do that heres a screenshot of the settings i dialed into lightroom before i put in the unsharp mask

Before and after the unsharp mask with the amount 15 and radius 85 i think it looks better than with what i did and this was done with the blacks on lightroom at +46 and shadows +48 let me know if that is bad in any way

Typically lenses have a gradual degradation in quality the closer you get to the corners. When you shoot at around f8 (I'm just using f8 as an example because it's the aperture that gets compared against the lens' most open aperture in MTF charts) to be able to have the best possible image quality, and, it also helps out with increasing your depth of field so more of your landscape is in focus

5.6 is fine. It's usually when someone is shooting f11 or f16. Some lens are sharp at 5.6. Obviously wide open can have edge problems too.

Thanks for getting back! I took it at night - everything was lit up by the full moon and I thought it was interesting how most of them stood perfectly still (15sec exposure) but you can still see a couple of ghosted sheep.

I tried to show that in the photo by making it a little dark but still bright enough that you could see the details to convey that. Also, wanted to try my hand at b&w photos so i also tried to retain a bunch of different textures and details.

Any suggestions on how I should have gone about framing the photo or editing it?

I think the color version is better than the black and white. In the b&w the shadows really dominate everything and it makes the background so visually uninteresting that I didn't notice what it was until you posted the color version and I went back to double check it. You could still edit it to change the colors like >>2984419 but the b&w you did was a detraction rather than an improvement.

you can look up your lens' mtf performance by aperture, f/8 is not always the sweet spot. if you take a landscape that really requires corner sharpness at the wrong aperture you may be kicking yourself

look at the light/halo around the girl, do you see that the grey color transition is not smooth? it has those "steps", vertical lines in it. that's banding. often an issue with image compression, low bitrates, or too high contrasts. idk many reasons - even if you don't recognize it, it's disturbing the look of the Picture. good thing is there are ways to avoid it or get rid of it in post
