This is the Film General Thread, aka FGT.
It's a place for you to post your film snapshits without flushing them down the Recent Photo Toilet.

I've got an old Voigtländer 6*9 Bessa which has an option to shoot 4,5*6 but I don't have the insert to do so.
Apparently it's just kind of a stencil that one puts inside the camera. Has anyone got an idea on how I could make one myself?

Or invest into point n shoots or a rangefinder type camera.

Well seems to have been rising in popularity on insta and in general in the film community. However it probably has always been popular. I shoot a lot on multiple a1's and altough it being a decent camera I found very little special about them. I can assure you the canon glass is good and the s.s.c. glass is worth the extra buck however I found that nikon made certain focal lengths I was interested in that canon didn't i.e. a pancake lens. Also focal length might be cheaper for nikon or canon. So it really depends on what you what kind of a system you won't to build up. Generally I think Nikon made more bodies to upgrade to. Especially the fm2 or n8000 were bodies I always found amazing but never went for because I was invested in the FD glass.

Anyway if you say you found a well priced ae-1 then you might as well go for it. But I don't think the shooting experience will be much different to the OM.

Imo the 50 1.4 really is worth the money its like 50 -70 bucks I believe. I was also using a macro focussing vivitar teleconverter. The Teleconverter basically gives you a 100mm 2.8 which is great for portraits and obviously even better for macro shots. I found it not taking away much of the sharp 50mm.

>>2982511
The FDn 35mm f2 and f2.8 are both absolutely stellar lenses. I find the 50mm a bit too tight for general carry around and the 35mm just right.

I'm thinking maybe a point and shoot though. If I speak for me and my friends, we are all videographers and filmmakers so we are constantly looking at displays and pressing buttons and going through menus; it gets cynical pretty quickly. Film just makes me so much more in the moment. I spend most of my time outside of the camera, where with a digital I'm going through menus and chimping.

Hey I'm new to (film) photography and I'm having some problem with understanding automatic exposure in aperture priority mode.
If I have an ISO 400 film in my camera but I set it to 800, the picture will be underexposed because of shorter exposure time, right?
And if I set ISO to 100 I guess it would be overexposed?
Then how do I make really long exposures (i.e. traffic light trails) without totally overexposing my picture? Even if I set aperture to 22 it's not long enough

It opens up the aperture before it starts reducing shutter speed. It would rather shoot 1/125th at f2.8 rather than 1/30 at f5.6.

This might be a long shot asking /p/ a questions like this but I figured it's worth a shot, I've always gotten pleasant surprises from this board.

Does anyone here have any personal experience with drum scanners? I'm looking at a reasonably priced Tango that comes with everything including the mounting station, the old Mac computer to run it, the software and two drums. It's been a good year and I need a tax write-off, but I know these will certainly change my workflow and there may be more to the cost that I don't see.

My understanding is that these are fairly reliable machines, but of course service is only provided by one guy in the US. I also fully expect to spend a full day mounting, scanning, and cleaning just a drum full of film. But the results will be stellar. I've been getting more and more customers wanting prints over 72" and my flatbed scans from 4x5 aren't going to cut it, and labs charge upwards of $250 for a single scan. I can't throw money like that away, but I would be happy to invest in the machine myself so I can scan what I want when I want. I already am self sufficient with E6 developing and all and want to take it further.

I understand that quality fluid for mounting is about $80 for 160 4x5's, and I know I'll need to clear out a ton of space in my small condo, but are there more maintenance issues I need to be aware of?
>>
>>2982988
im not professional and have never used a drum scanner or anything, but i can imagine having a drum scanner in a small linving space being an eternal warfare against dust. these things are usually done in lab like enviroments with little to no textiles lying around, and easy to clean surfaces? if youre a really ocd person thats not that big of a problem though..
>>
>>2982991
Yes, it's even a nightmare with the flatbed. Bonus with wet scanning is that it should really help with dust. I will be making a dust cover for it if I go through with it.
>>
>>2982510
Looks great. Which film did you use?
>>
>>2982988
I have no answer to your question, only more questions. Where would you get the scanner juice in a way that makes it a savings over $250 per image? What kind of volumes are you dealing with here?

At the same time if you can write it off entirely and/or were looking for a new toy, I say go for it.
>>
Renting a 503CW for 3 days at then end of the month, I'll be shooting two rolls of black and white and maybe one roll of colour.
Can't find Acros in my city, probably will go with Hp5+ or Tri X for black and white. Anyone recommend a decently priced 120 colour film?

Also tips for getting the most our of the Hasselblad? Shit to know or watch our for?
>>
>>2983027
Both of those blacks and whites are fine, but consider t-max 400 as well for long exposures and what-not (unless zouthern or something). The cheapest 400 speed colour negative film is portra 400, funnily enough, because many say it's the best stuff around. Fuji charges out the bumhole for pro 400h, but if you're fine paying like 4/5 more for slightly fuller colours, go ahead.
>>
>>2983026
Well the scanner itself is only $5k, so at $250 per scan the payoff is only in 20 sheets, of course not including the labor time to perform the scanning but I've already considered that to be a net benefit when it comes to home developing E6 so I'm not too concerned about the extra time of drum scanning.

I shoot a couple hundred 4x5's a year and would like to achieve the best possible scans out at least a dozen or more per year, plus I have the old backlog of at least a hundred images that sell on a regular basis and people have been asking for larger sizes on many of them.

Also another question in case anyone has used one, is the learning curve really insane to operate them properly? I'm no dunce with stuff like this but people make drum scanners sound like rocket science.
>>
>>2983041
Then the question is, would you have paid to scan those 20 sheets? If so, you'll be saving money -- of course in proportion to how valuable you'd say your time spent is, unless it's hobby time of course. But like, if you're selling prints of those scans at a rate where doing it yourself is a money-making measure and not "saving money at hobby", heck go for it. The least you'll do is report back to /p/, right?

Also, living space: presumably these things are bigger than a b&w darkroom setup in a laundry room. "Computer workstation to drive it" sounds a bit like "four square feet just for that", which is a fraction of rent and other costs. But perhaps you'll be moving into a bigger apartment soon, hm?
>>
>>2983041
>>2982988
>in case anyone has used one, is the learning curve really insane to operate them properly? I'm no dunce with stuff like this but people make drum scanners sound like rocket science.
I haven't but I've seen some stuff passively over time. I'd take the learning curve with a pinch of salt. If you're not thick as a brick you'll probably be fine. The physical scanning process isn't that hard.
If you're the type of person who struggles to use computers or old antiquated software you may have some issues, but I'm sure there's gotta be some good resources out there on the web for you.

Sorry I can't help you more with the drum scanning part particularly but you mentioned dust (which is my enemy)
Using a dedicated scanner like this, you've already said you're going to build a dust cover for it. My Pakon had issues a tonne with dust even when I was using a cover. I found a nice solution was to use cheap PVC tape on any opening before sealing then wiping down with a damp towel before scanning. Obviously in a clean room that's been hoovered/dusted etc.
>>
>>2983045
So far I have yet to pay for a drum scan. A guy from Flickr offered to do a few for me at no charge several years ago and the results blew my mind. I also had him do a 645 frame and the detail was damn near what I get from 4x5 on my flatbed except the shadows were cleaner. Still, for all practical reasons I decided to ignore the idea of a drum scanner. However, in the last few years I've gotten the balls and finances to print BIG (48x60") and they sell, but I only have a handful of scans that I feel comfortable printing at that size. Ones with deep shadows or things the Epson couldn't deal with area a challenge and I would like to be able to print everything in my catalog at that size if requested. So, would I pay for 20 scans at $250? Shit no, but I would certainly do them if I had the tool. Unfortunately I won't be moving into a bigger space anytime soon as I own the place and enjoy it. It's not a small space but it's a two bedroom condo with no huge darkroom area. My current darkroom is in a walk-in closet attached to a bathroom and the Jobo processor lives in the spare bathroom, the spare bedroom is the "office" with framing table and print supplies which is where this thing would live. Somehow my lady doesn't complain about that arrangement.

>>2983046
That's what I figured. Years ago I had some shitty 35mm canonscan that needed SCSI and it was dumb but I could figure it out. I can imagine the Linocolor software that comes with the Tango drum scanner won't be awesome by today's standards but I can imagine that I'd be able to drive it with some practice.

So I bought a Yashica T3 off eBay which came with a roll of Fujicolor 200. I've got it developed and did some quick scans myself and it looks pretty grainy and awful. It's got loads of weird white marks and hairline streaks. Is it a badly expired film?

I scanned in some recent Portra 400 and it looks perfectly fine. Could there be anything wrong with the camera perhaps or is it just a dodgy roll of film?

Not sure what the white spots/lines are as there's no dust or dirt on the negatives.

Expired film.

Film base breaks down after it expires which is why you're seeing white spots and hairlines all over your image. It can start to fuck with the colours and will ramp up the grain as well.

Composing square is different. Read into square composition.

Makes sure you don't jam the camera by doing things in the wrong order. A quick Google of "hasselblad jam" should teach you what not to do.
>>
>>2983079
Just remember that the prices charged for drum scans are more a function of the time required than the cost of the machine that does it. You're paying a skilled operator for 2.5 hours of their time, and that person is now you.
It will be slooooowwww.
>>
>>2983157
If its an intro to film class why would they want you to get a fully automatic point and shoot defeats the purpose of learning about exposure and photography.

Your teacher will ask you to buy something with manual controls.
>>
>>2983148
more of a case of slight scratches and dust on the film. The scratches could be from the camera or from development. Nice shot anyway. Btw is this Berlin?

>>

Alex who?
>>
>>2983148
M8, the white specks are absolutely dust on the film.
The line is a scratch, either from your camera, or the processor, or a speck of dust being trapped in the felt light seal of the canister and scratching the film.
More importantly, none of these things are a big deal, 30 seconds with the healing brush.
>>2983158
>Yeah but none of my other scans have those faint lines/specks
I guarantee they do, honey.
You probably just shot them in better light, or their non-expiredness gave a better response to their relative exposures.
A denser negative will show less grain and less dust than a thin one like these.
The moral of the story is to scan your film as soon as practicable after processing, and work in a clean environment.
>>
>>2983196
I've dealt with plenty of Photo 1 students. You'd be surprised how many are thick as a brick, even when they should know better. A point and shoot is going to be fine if you want to have them understand composition. Manual Cameras will only be plenty useful when in the hands of someone with more synapses firing than a baked potato. If they aren't yet interested in what aperture and shutter speed do for photos, then it'll only result in confusing them. Granted I'm talking about non-photo/art majors. It's like teaching kids to write in pencil before pens.
>>
>>2983196
>>2983213
Yeah, I can only imagine the number of fucked rolls you'd see teaching this shit to modern students.
Especially if you're mainly going to show them developing and printing, you're much more likely to get usable negatives from a P&S than something they'd be expected to load, wind, focus, expose, and rewind successfully themselves.

This is what shatbedders actually believe, children.

The reality is that every single roll of film you develop will have a different colour balance, as will most every frame, presuming one shot per motive.
You should be adjusting every frame individually.
Just like instagram filters are basic-bitch catch-alls, so are colour correction presets.

Is that a thing on this board? make the image as small and shitty as possible? I dont use 1mb jpegs for photos of literal shit. Read the rules.

Imagine if every website had full resolution images and didn't compress them and use the correct file type. It would be a terrible browsing experience.

Learn the compress and optimise images and stop being a lazy cunt. There's no need for it to be a PNG. It doesn't have transparency and it isn't flat/low colour artwork.

Stop being a fucking idiot.

Film v Digi01.jpg

It's been a while since we've done some film vs. digital shitposting. By accident I shot 2 very similar snapshits with both film and digital, so I thought I'd share.

Digital: a6000, ISO100, Lens Turbo 2, Minolta MD 50/1.4 @ f5.6, Capture One 10.

Film: Minolta XD-11, Minolta MD 50/1.4@ f5.6, Kodak Ultramax 400, self developed in Kodak Flexicolor chems, scanned with a6000 and Micro-Nikkor 55/3.5 @ f8, hand inverted in Capture One 10.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to make any claims as to which is superior. I shoot both film and digital and will continue to do so.

My takeaway: At web sized resolutions, the differences in detail are negligible. Ultramax 400 did better than I would have expected vs a6000 at ISO 100. When printing large or cropping heavily, the a6000 pulls ahead by a substantial margin. The film handles the specular highlights much more gracefully. The digital workflow is far easier. But I enjoy playing with chemicals and inverting/processing.

Questions?

100% crop to follow.

I tried to leave things neutral for the sake of comparison. What you see is pretty much how Capture One rendered the digital shot, white balance set in camera to daylight. I processed the film shot to somewhat match. If it was to my taste the blacks would have been crushed.

Both Images shot/scanned with a6000. Both ARW's processed with Capture One at the same default settings. The only adjustments are levels and color balance.

They all send it out now. Honestly do it yourself. If you are doing color 135 or 120 film just get a Paterson and a c-41 press kit to start off. If you are doing black and white photographers formulary has really great chemicals to get you started although the process is a little less straightforward.

A lab did it, I don't know the exact model of the scanner they use, I just know that it's fuji and it's huge. I will investigate.

I don't think fingers were the main problem with this roll, the film literally got stuck into the developing tank and I scratched and bent it while trying to fix it. I'll try not to fuck up next time. I'll try dish soap too, thank you for the advice.

Oh finally, an anon that cares kek
though no else would reply
Well Darkroom is the only place that can develop it
I already have many prepaid mailing slips from them
So getting the photos is super easy from them.
just gotta wait.
On Ebay there's a group called ezoxcrop that strictly makes 127 film. Both in color and monochrome
They sell for a reasonable price.
Aside that, the eye matic is of course not the golden arch of 127
However, its more of a bronze.
Think about.
There are 100s of 127 camera with one len, fixed shutter, and only one poor aperture.
The only best ones are the Baby and the Yashica 44
But then I saw this, rare, unique piece
yea it doesnt have many shutter speeds but hey

They usually straight up dump unedited lab scans (because what is post, what is editing, this is feelm xD after all!) whereas flickr samples although greatly tagged and high quality/resolution are way more often cropped/heavily edited in post. It makes for good photography but bad film characteristic sampling.

How should I shoot Portra 800 on 35mm? I've heard some people say that they shoot it at 640 or lower.

I'm mostly gonna be shooting around Tokyo at night, if that's any help
>>
>>2984009
Rating it at 640 is probabky a good idea, as all c41 gets grainer when underexposed. Grab some Natura 1600 once you're here to get a bit more speed. 3 packs are ~¥2400
>>
>>2984012
Noted, I'll give that a shot.

I plan on stocking up on some japan only emulsions while I'm there. I shoot film pretty slowly so some 400h and Superia Premium and Natura 1600 should last me ages
>>
>>2984014
400H is really underrated. Everyone totally overlooks it while jacking off to Portra.
>>
>>2984017
Agreed, it's a lovely film. A bit expensive for most people though, B&H has it for $10.49 for a 35mm roll, vs $6.49 for a roll of Portra 400.

I hardly ever fuck with 'professional' emulsions since I feel like my photos don't really ever qualify for such a thing, but it'll be nice to shoot some better quality stuff after Japan

Where you using expired film or does your camera have light leaks? These photos are fucked up, film doesn't look like this normally
>>

>used to get clear pictures also on rollei 400 dev in fomadon r09, using the same camera. maybe my dev tank is somewhat broken or I don't shake it properly.
I don't think that's it m8
>I measured it with my finger because I broke the thermometer time ago... probably that's the cause
This probably is. You should be processing around 20/21c, which is room temperature. I'm not sure how good your finger is at measuring 20c, but I'm willing to bet that leaving a bottle of water out at room temperature for a few hours before hand will work a lot better for you.

Your tank will have nothing to do with it, and more agitation will give you more grain. It could just be a mix of the subject and it being a little underexposed? It looks exactly like what I'd expect for RPX in R09.

Colours are way off, probably a lightleak or you're shooting hella expired film.
The first just seems to be out of focus. Third shot has motion blur by the looks of it, google recriprocal shutter speed rule or use a tripod.
If the camera has a light leak, it's fairly easy to replace the seals.

$205 all together. It's in really great shape with everything functioning as should. My only complaint is there's a tiny bit of the seal missing on the inward lower right side of the door but that probably won't need to be replaced for a while.

so which one is better and worth the investment?

V850 or Nikon Coolscan 9000 ed

the Epson v850 is a cheaper choice but its too big and i have a small room plus my room is kinda dusty and its gonna be a pain to keep blowing the scanner before i use it.. also i heard the scans arent as good as the Coolscan 9000 ed... The only pro for the V850 is largeformat scanning..

inb4 use dslr to scan.. nah thats just fucking redundant..
>>
>>2985084
That's what I thought would be the most efficient way to compose any macros. However while waiting on a better tripod I recently ordered I figured framing a subject near the center-top of the finder would work well too.

You're right. It isn't the type of information and no. You have to process your film first in developer then fix the image. No filter will allow you to scan without processing.
(no-one even fucking respond with latent imaging or I'll bin me dslr)
>>2985088
V850 desu, but it really depends entirely on what you're scanning. Post what it is that you'll be scanning before asking a question like this and you'll get better replies.
135: DSLR Scan
120: DSLR scan/Epson
4x5+ Epson unless you love stitching.

I fucking hate DSLR scanning, I hate the time it takes to setup, I hate the fucking arrogance surrounding it's users but considering that scanning tech died with drum scans and lab scanners, it's the best way. It only requires you to be proficient enough to focus and exposure a frame, two things you should already be good at before scanning.

People give "budget" film a bad rep and people hype up even agfa vista but forget that back in the film days most goyim were shooting P&S or disposable cameras. Put a nice emulsion in a nice body with a nice lens and you'll get great results. The only thing AGFA/Superia/Gold 200 have going against them is that one stop, but they're really good emulsions in practice.
I shoot AGFA/Superia 200 over Portra 160 often.

Buy a dedicated scanner (pakon, noritsu, frontier etc) or buy a shatbed then.

DSLR scanning will do, and it's kinda the best option you have anyway for xpan outside of the above.

Yep, either too vigorous or not enough agitation.
Constant inversions for 30 seconds after pouring your dev in, and two inversions at one minute intervals for the rest of the dev time.
You should be counting one mississippi two mississippi to complete a full inversion.
You want to get a gentle flow of fresh mixture over the surface of your film, not creating any turbulence or aeration in the mixture.

It's a great camera, easy to use and affordable lenses. My only gripe with it was that it hogs batteries, be sure to carry an extra set anywhere you go (the carrying strap has a battery holder). I recommend 2.8/28 and 2/45 for short lenses. Avoid 2.8/35, at least the newer version has pretty bad sharpness.

For film brands you don't have much choice, since you're just beginning I recommend you shoot with whatever's cheapest in your area. You can get a shitload of Fomapan for real cheap if you order in bulk of 10 or 20 rolls and it's good enough until you know what you're doing. I hear Kentmere is the best of the cheapo brands, but I have no personal experience on it since it's not sold around here.

Sorry, but I have to correct the record here concerning Minolta lenses. The MD 2.8/35 (newer version) has excellent sharpness for it's price class. It has better sharpness and far less aberrations than the 2.8/28. The 2/45 was the cheapest and worst kit lens Minolta ever put on the front of a camera. The ONLY positive thing about this lens is that it is tiny, practically a pancake. For some unknown reason, the shit-tier 45 has hipster cred. The 1.7/50 in any MC/MD/Minolta version will destroy the 45 and should be a Minolta owners first lens.

>My only gripe with it was that it hogs batteries
Unless you are shooting 30 rolls a day 7 days a week, this statement is utterly false. If you shoot 5-10 rolls per month, the batteries should be good for at least a YEAR. I agree it's a good idea to have a fresh set in the camera bag, but calling an X-series Minolta a battery hog is retarded.
