Working with a canon 50mm 1.8
tamron 28-200mm 4.0
and I just regrettably sold my rokinon 14mm ultrawide

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is decent.

I'm not sure exactly where this went so wrong, but maybe you can define what you mean by a "nice" 35mm. Other than jumping straight onto the L series, you're not really going to find a better or even cheaper 35mm EF mount lens under that price. The Tamron's really an all mount solution, but sure it's in EF mount, their other primes are unique on EF though. The Sigma is alright, but it's for people who read lens reviews online, post only to flickr and can't afford an L lens.

Disregard everything negative you've ever read about the Canon 35mm f2 IS, people still have a hate boner for it because it cost more than the gen 1 copy and don't understand why you'd want IS on a prime/wide angle prime. Truthfully, it's one of the best lenses that Canon produce and makes their decision to not include IS on larger L series lenses questionable. 2nd hand the 35/2/IS goes within your budget. You won't regret this purchase.
