I can get a Yi M1 4k for 350, or I can get a Sony a5000 for 350. I could also shell out 100 more and get a Canon T6 bundle.
I'm a complete beginner and would like to learn the basics of photography. I'm leaning toward the Yi because it supports 4k/30 video and 1080/60 video. Thoughts?

Follow-up: or is there another camera in the 350-450 price range (mirrorless or dslr) that is suitable for a complete novice AND boasts decent video capabilities?

it would be nice to know what they shot that image with. the exif data is all wrong and the camera didn't even exist when the album came out.

Any camera with bad lens would do.
If you're op get ANY middle-ranged camera with good fast semiwide lens.
But I warn you, you'll eventually want something smaller and cooler like a nice x100 or x70 or even Ricoh GR

The form factor is making me lean more toward the mirrorless cameras than the dslrs. It seems that it would be best to get the camera that is more portable since a beginner needs the most practice. If i'm reluctant to carry the dslr then I wont have as much practice, and that kind of defeats the purpose, right?

I don't define myself a pro but still the camera's size is sometimes a problem for me. It's a rule that fits everybody at any level.

It's hard to practice if your camera is dead.

Fair enough. I've removed the Yi from consideration because the reviews aren't that great.
So here are my current best options:
$350
Sony Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm OSS Lens
vs.
$450
Canon EOS Rebel T6 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm EF-S f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens + 58mm Wide Angle Lens + 2x Telephoto Lens + Flash + 48GB SD Memory Card + UV Filter Kit + Tripod + Full Accessory Bundle for $450?

Don't fucking buy the second shit.
I told you body + fast lens, not body + mediocre lens and useless uvs.
Get that body + equivalent fast 35mm (~40/cropfacactor)

Gotcha, I'll look around some more. Thanks

>Cheapo box cam with fixed shutter speed around 1/30s - 1/60s
>Cheapo, grainy b&w film (e.g. Fomapan)
>Largest aperture setting possible
>Sunny / mostly sunny day about an hour and a half before sunset
That's probably not what Will Oldham used to take the Spiderland photo, but I've gotten similar-looking photos (see pic related) by using this combination.
