Is it sharpness, colors, everything? What's off about the scans?

To be honest my setup is great for 35mm. My macro lens can only do 1:2 for 35mm so quite a bit of cropping is necessary so perhaps that's the problem. I typically shoot 120, in which case my scans look pretty good (I think). Perhaps it's time to buy an extension tube...

that shot looks like a muddy shot oversharpened digitally, it has coarse edges, that disgusting look of bayer aa filter correction, looks rigid and should look comfy.

get at least one frame scanned by a method that isnt a meme and see for yourself. you should be able to see the grain, there is no grain now, only mud.

Hmm, wonder if the A7's long exposure noise reduction is having an effect...

Well, no access to a scanner for the next year or so. I'll try grabbing an extension tube and cutting down on exposure time to see if that improves things.

For now if it's possible to ignore the scan quality it'd be great to get some crit on the images themselves.

I tried some different things (personally) with these shots and would like to know if they even work. I haven't shot landscape 35mm in a long, long time as well and it'd be nice to know how the compositions and resulting flow through the images are (especially the vertical shots which I have trouble with).

Aside from the first photo that was shot in a touristy place, the rest of these were shot in butt-fuck nowhere Japan far off any popular tourist route. If the train stations pictured were built so people can take cool snaps they really fucked up because they are ugly as hell. And I know your not suggesting a mountain and natural river were made created so people can snap cool photos, right?

Looks like you hit some nice spots. Scans aren't great but that may just be due to your monitor limitations in getting the scans right in terms of contrast/ lighting/ colours/ sharpness. Did you go up the small mountain on Miyajima?

shit analogy. if you cant look past the scan quality on these to crit the images then it says far more about you than anything else. Its more like watching a movie on VHS on an old TV. Its a bit grainy and the colours and light are a bit off, but all the components are there and you can see the intended direction and what you're missing through the limitations imposed by the technology.

Yeah, we hiked the mountain on Miyajima. The place was surprisingly uncrowded in general, probabky due to the cool and cloudy weather. Best part was eating some amazing oysters and riding out a small earthquake in the restaurant.
